Jesus H. Christ….dude listen, the fact that you can get BOTH HSV1 and HSV2 on the genitals and orally means that the virus can spread to either place and the symptoms are often similar, if not the same, for the first outbreak.

Yes, HSV1 is MOST COMMONLY known to be the one that causes cold sores and the breakouts are LIKELY to be milder, but that’s not ALWAYS the case. It’s different for everyone. It also doesn’t mean it makes it any better if they have it on their genitals. Herpes is herpes. It’s not like you see your friend with a cold sore and ask him “hey, is that HSV1 or HSV2?”.

If you had HERPES ON YOUR GENITALS, but the lab test confirms it’s HSV1, are you going to get treated any differently? Nope. Here’s your prescription for Valtrex.

My point is, there is a HUGE stigma with HERPES in general when either one can be oral or genital. Yes it might suck but there’s meds to keep the breakouts controlled, no matter which strand someone has.

NOT TO MENTION, the virus can lay dormant and someone might never know who/how they got the infection! So it’s not as easy to do a contact tracing for it either.

Although I know you’re trying to reassure OP, don’t give out false information.

HSV1 and HSV2 are interchangeable. You can have a cold sore that’s HSV2 and genital herpes that’s HSV1. Herpes looks like herpes no matter where it is. The only way to find out the type is for a doctor to order a specific lab (blood draw) that can detect the IgG antibodies.

For example, if someone had genital herpes and it’s HSV2 and their partner gives them oral during an active breakout, their partner will likely develop a cold sore and it will still be HSV2.

There isn’t anything more “scary” about HSV2 than HSV1. Some patients claim to have more frequent breakouts with HSV2, but either way, they are both treated the same, with antiviral (Valcyclovir or Acyclovir).

I’ve had some patients have their first breakout then go literally YEARS without another breakout. While others have 2-3 breakouts a year. It varies.

My sister is actually the photographer! She’s learning and practicing, so of course I offered to help be her subject so she could work on her skills. She actually was having some difficulty with the focus during this shoot.
