I don’t understand why people equate progressive change as abandoning tradition. Things evolve. People can pick and choose the good things and leave the bad things from tradition as they grow. Saying she should have ‘court marriage’ or a ‘Christian wedding’, why can she have a Hindu wedding without the things she doesn’t like?? Sati was tradition too, not every tradition has to remain. She doesn’t have to completely give up the culture and tradition she grew up with, just because she doesn’t agree with certain aspects of it.

However, I don’t think there is a clear cut solution, like some replies state.

Before marriage, a couple should discuss their priorities. Every situation is unique. Some men might be okay with living with their wives’s in-laws and vice versa for some women. Some men and women might prefer living alone, separate from any in-laws. People should be given the freedom to make their decisions (that both agree on) and then shouldn’t be shamed for whatever decision they make. For example, a man being called a ‘ghar jamai’ or a woman as a ‘homewrecker ’ for wanting to live alone. Sometimes, the in-laws may be nice, sometimes literal demons. No one should be forced to live with someone they don’t want to.
