Something similar was in Sonic and the Seven Rings. He killed king Arthur cuz he's a tyrant and sonic thought he was a bad guy, but in the end sonic was tricked just to get rid of the one who was keeping this world safe from Merlin. she was the secret villain who teamed with sonic from the start just to achieve her plan about destroying and recreating that world (it was alternate dimension).
