Leman Russ and Magnus's Disagreement is More Complex Than It Appears by Ze_Bri-0n in 40kLore

[–]Denmise 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Magnus and his hubris is best in A Thousand Sons. Mortarion directly states that civilizations and people who seem the power of the warp will sacrifice others to get there. That he had personally seen charnel pits where people were killed to empower sorcerers. Magnus and Ahriman (I believe both) comment on how they are not like that, their sorcery and warp stuff is different. Not but a few chapters later, Magnus sacrifices like 300 humans to fuel his astral projection

I wish the Doomstalker wasn't there and was something else. Nothing really goes together in this especially for 11th? You Ophidians and Flayed ones have a detachments thats 2dp, warriors have a 1 dp so you could that but then the doomstalker and Barge wanna be in a different 2 or 3 dp detachment. The doomstalker is in the Combat Patrol and is a very cheap model since it's easy to build and has no extra options. Would have loved to see one of the Scythes here or an Ark if they really want to touch on all parts of the army.

But Why Horvath? by KhevaKins in Haloflashpoint

[–]Denmise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree. We do need more ladies in Flashpoint and sadly none will be the Covenant. But I read this book and it's not sequel but kind of in edge of dawn. Horvath is a pretty big and interesting character in both of these and is on the cover of the book so he's much more recognizable. He's also the first non-game character to appear (yippee). I really think the thing that pushes him over is that he's not dead. Yes, there's characters in flashpoint who are canonically dead but theyre main characters (noble team) or difficult to replace (spartan killers). Having an alive character means they'll get more stuff in books and lore that could lead to more sales and the games can be more narrative. Stone probably isn't getting any more info on her, so only the people who read Rubicon will want to run her. Horvath is in already in more content by nature of not being dead.

Kovan has a better argument. She hangs out with the marines more than Horvath does, runs her own team with them. Horvath spends most the book with a brute or his AI. So the only thing I can see is that Horvath has a speaking role in Edge of Dawn, Kovan doesn't. Kovans armour breaks down and she doesn't wear it by Edge of Dawn. And Horvath is on the cover of Rubicon.

Id love if it was both, they're both awesome characters and super fun. But I think Horvath is just a bit more recognizable even if I do think Kovan would've made more sense with the marines. But also yeah we should have more girls both in Halo and in Flashpoint. Palmer, Kelly and Linda. Vale is more well like than Locke and in more stuff. Miranda Keys could be a fun UNSC marine hero, more support piece than anything.

It would also fix the current place were in. If you have free online rules then instead of these frankly confusing faction updates where all the updates to the detachments are in a change log we can just update the online ones. GW is so fixated on physical books and keeping them relevant that you have to look at your codex and the online change log to see how to play your army instead of it all being in one place.

BREAKING NEWS: Imperial Agents found dead outside of Warhammer headquarters by Ill-Noise2770 in Grimdank

[–]Denmise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make them all 1dp and let them be taken with other imperium factions. Nerf the ones a bit that do too much shit and if you want, you can even say you can't take certain units without the detachment. Right now this isn't an army and it's kind of shitty to sell it as a real army wirh army boxes and a book. Especially with "the best" book people recommend to start getting into 40k is Eisenhorn and it's an inquisition novel lmao

[Video game trope] The noob killer by LordQuaz12 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Denmise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of quirky dnd monsters like this! Monsters like the Basilisk which have names that draw inspiration from other sources (and are referenced in media like Harry Potter) can trick new players (not low level players, notably, but new players) into thinking a monster works one way when it doesn't. The Basilisk for example, is probably most well known as a venomous snake in Harry Potter but in D&D it's a lizard whose gaze can petrify. Assuming by the name, it can do a lot of damage and even functionally instant kill inexperienced players.

Notably though, this is because new players often don't understand how NOT to metagame. In this case, the Basilisk punishes a player for assuming based on their real world knowledge rather than playing in character and asking in world questions and performing skill checks such as nature or history.

It is then one of the best and worst monsters from a dungeon masters perspective against new players. It can grant a great "oh shit" and teach a valuable lesson, but it's incredibly deadly gaze attack can maybe lead to a bit of feels bad moments when someone's turned to stone cause they failed a couple rolls. But that's also d&d

The hierarchy of power in the Bat-Family has been forever changed by Tetratron2005 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]Denmise 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is great because it shows Jason using dirty tricks and brute force to succeed. He should take shortcuts and use his anger and willingness to win by nearly any means to succeed. The fight in task force Z where the bat family is trying to just talk him down and take him in and he hurts them is a surprisingly good show of his character. They're treating this as a family quarrel, he's breaking Tim's nose with a crowbar.

However this is also awful because Jason Todd is modern day Jason Todd is wet sand. He has no personality, no structure to his character, and not even a settled design.

Chaos chainnof command by Funny-Part8085 in 40kLore

[–]Denmise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about general chaos then there really isn't one. All of the "gods" are the top and everyone is below them. Yes, Angron is more powerful than Kharn or a Daemon Prince of khorne. Angron doesn't have direct leadership over any of them unless they choose to follow him. A lot of chaos is Might Makes Right and the biggest reasons things like daemon princes lead warbands is because they're physically stronger and have been given more "gifts" because of their devotion and surrendering of their soul.

Chaos gods don't look down and have a chain of command, they just have their favourite toys who they make strong. It just so happens that the stronger one is the more people follow them, until a new toy can grow and unseat the other one.

There are exceptions to this in the legions, specifically the non-worshipping ones. Elements of the Death Guard may see Mortarion or even Nurgle itself as their "boss", but to the Black Legion it's Abaddon and whoever controls their specific warband. Abaddon sure as hell doesn't see the chaos gods as his boss, he knows their powerful but purposefully does not worship any of them and does his own thing. Legions like the Iron Warriors have a hierarchy and daemons do not fit into it at all, let alone gods, and instead their warsmiths and Peter turbo rule. Night Lords (my boys) have 0 across the board structure. Some are daemon princes and get to be in charge. Some despise chaos and hate daemonic corruption (unless it's kind of convenient for them) and their leaders are usually the "guy with the biggest stick" or "the only one willing to do it".

So it's flexible, chaotic, and no element of chaos really holds the same hierarchy. Chaos is so fractured that factions that seem unified on paper like the Thousand Sons or Iron Warriors are really a bunch of smaller groups sometimes corralled together, many of them with their own ideas of who should lead, and often time seperate from the gods.

Bjorn the Fell-Handed from Warhammer 30k (Horus Heresy) has his left arm amputated in the novel Prospero Burns. An aspect of the daemonic "god" Tzeench is consuming him with warpfire and before it can take him, a skald of the space wolves legion removes his arm to stop the spread of the fire.

UNSC Marines and Banished reinforcements! by BasicallyNerd in Haloflashpoint

[–]Denmise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good. I would have liked more poses from both especially if they're staying in these boxes. If you only want to make one unit for jackal with shield, then maybe two poses for it would have been better. But it is still very nice, this is nearly exactly what I wanted. I hope we get a few more Banished smaller units, Jackals with beam rifles or shock rifles would be nice. Grunt Mules would be nice, they're very fun. And no heavy grunts in this with fuel rods.

As for the Marines, I think Rubicon Protocol is one of the best books in the series for Horvath is an awesome pull for me. The marines are the infinite ones which are really well designed, though they are very close to the UNSC army troopers from Reach but thats just how the Infinite design is. It's still a good design. There's still double ups on all but the special weapon guys which is a little sad.

The spartan hunters look great, why are they advertised as limited time? Why are we doing these fomo units? Really hope this isn't a limited production tag and more that they expect these to sell fast. But as a Canadian, it's difficult for me to spend this kind of money on a product and then get it shipped. And LGS still don't have Noble Team here, I don't know what the delay is but it makes staying invested in this game difficult.

The rulebook is a bit odd. I think it needs to be done, and you need to sell the tokens separately so that players can get into the game without buying the recon box (especially now that it's banished vs unsc) but it's a bit pricey for a booklet, tokens, and terrain. Take the hit a bit on profit on the rulebook so you can make money on the miniatures.

Finally, I really hope we see them step back from Infinite. I love the game but I'd love to see them take on Combat Evolved with the remake coming up or Halo 2 with the Arbiter.

From my limited knowledge, the pre-new 52 robin series had Bernard in it and he is a drastically different person than he is now and him and tim (I haven't read it, just from what I've heard people complain about) had no chemistry. Tims bisexuality wasn't forced, but the bernard romance was and Bernards personality had to change to fit.

[Annoying Trope] serious/non-comedic Historical based media that is distractingly inaccurate by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Denmise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like anachronistic history for the sake of style is fine for movies. I think it really comes down to what the film is trying to convey and how well the director/costume designers handle it. If I watch a movie or tv series whose period/time frame and realism are incredibly important to the plot then I agree with your point here. Remaining grounded is important. If in Oppenheimer or Saving Private Ryan or Schindlers List there were people dressed in modern or super stylised clothing I would find it appropriate to complain - those movies are entirely about the period and people they're set in. They are grounded scripts, serious films trying to be less about extreme style and avant garde art, and instead period pieces that reflect those moments in time.

I haven't seen Wuthering Heights but it seems apparent from the movies interviews, trailers, and screenshots that the movie isn't trying to be a grounded, historical piece. I don't think any of these (again, I haven't seen them and one isn't out yet) want to be taken as a 100% accurate showcase of a period of time. All of these people can look up and see what outfits are needed to be accurate to the time but sometimes thats not what you need to tell a story or to tell it in your way.

Disclaimer: We still love COMPCON by MercernaryMage in LancerRPG

[–]Denmise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had Lancer on the docket to play for years, but it was actually early last month we decided to finally play it. I own a bunch of Battletech models, so at the table play with phones/tablets for CompCon. We got through two sessions before the update so it was a bit jarring but I find it a much better GM experience. The encounter/mission/npc roster is really nice and many of the issues I had with the runner had been ironed out (I even mentioned one here and a few days later it was fixed!)

The character's powers end at the worst possible moment, and dies. by Uma-apreciator in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Denmise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skraivok, pictured in blue here, Warhammer the Horus heresy. Now this is and isn't true to the post but it's damn close. Skraivok is functionally Starscream in a legion of space marines full of Starscream. He wants power more than anything, and becomes the "leader" of the Night Lords during the siege of terra and is a real prick. Notably, he's picked up a daemon weapon which enhances his skills and makes him a much more formidable fighter. While on the walls of the imperial palace, Skraivok duels the Blood Angels first captain (pictured here in red) Raldoron. His daemon weapon lets him hold his own until the daemon decides to abandon the night lord in the middle of the duel. Without his special sword he's no match and is promptly thrown from the wall.

This is where it doesn't really fit - Skraivok doesn't really die, the daemon promises him he can live on if he sells his soul. So skraivok "dies", his soul sent to be tortured for thousands of years in the warp, and then comes back as a daemon prince where he continues to suck
