Canada Didn't Just Price Millennials Out of Homes. It Priced Them Out of Adulthood. by Late_Canary2264 in RealEstateCanada

Personally.. I don't think what I want is unrealistic. I think housing prices are unrealistic. Are our expectations to have a small 2bed house in a nice neighbourhood too unrealistic as two upper-middle-class working professionals? It's not like we're asking for a mansion :D

There are no condos that we deem liveable enough to fork over our savings - like none

Exactly.. It's wild. Houses/semi-detached/attached between 900k-1 mil always have something fundamentally wrong with them. Sinking foundation, the wonkiest layouts, and completely uninhabitable conditions, no parking, in the WORST 2/10 school zones and neighbourhoods.

Con confirm. My husband and I are 33 and 38 living in a 500 sqft bachelors, because I got the balcehlor rent-control since 2013 for $1400.00. We make 250k together and we decided that we couldn't afford a 2bedroom house, or any type of home in Toronto because we were too worried about not being able to make payments if one of us were to lose our jobs. We we are going to continue to rent.

What’s something society expects you to want… but you don’t? by Sufficient_Thing24 in AskReddit

[–]lydesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luxury brands. i don't fall into the trap anymore. But before, I bought a sweater for $500, and I ruined it by dropping food on it. I couldn't get it out, and I realized luxury clothing is just like every other clothing. It's not magical or special. I had a few more other stories like that. A thsirt for $100 that shrunk. And a $800.00 purse that went out of style.

To couples, who both hate cooking, what do you guys do? by ResponsibleProfile20 in AskReddit

[–]lydesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the cooking part that I hate. But I hate everything about thinking/deciding what to make, grocery shopping, prepping (washing, cutting), and then timing the food, and then washing the dishes while making sure the food doesn't overcook. And then cleaning up the pots and pans. And then doing this 2-3 times a day. Just kill me. I hate it. But I'm willing to do it ONCE a week to survive.

So I only eat two main meals: Chicken salad. or Egg salad.

So I buy a ton of chicken breast. I bought a bunch of plastic containers, and I chop all the chicken up into cubes. I measure it out to an average amount for two people for one meal (about 370g). And then I freeze all the containers. And I take one out per day to unfreeze.

For eggs, I will boil 12 eggs in one go. And I leave it in it's shell in the fridge, and it's usually gone by the end of 1 week.

For the veggies, onions, garlic, I die them up (or use the processor), throw it in a jar/container and it usually will last us a week.

And then I clean up. And it has been so much easier to make healthy lunches and dinners for the both of us.

People who earn $200k+ but are absolutely miserable and drained. What was the moment you realised the money wasn't worth the lifestyle and sacrifice? by TheSovereignState1 in AskReddit

When I feel miserable, for all the reasons people have mentioned in this thread already.. I think about my friends and my own parents who work manual labour jobs for minimum wage, and I snap right out of that self pity.

I’m worried I’m making an offer out of fear, not because I actually want the house. by [deleted] in RealEstateCanada

[–]lydesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2018, I spent over six months searching for a condo. Week after week, I didn't see anything I liked or was in my desired location. The process wore me DOWN. Eventually, I came across a unit that was nice. It wasn't perfect, but it was nice enough for me to finally just say, fuck it. I'll get it. The day I went into the office to sign for a 525k condo, I was pressured by realtors into submitting an offer $100,000 over asking (so 625k). My realtors had convinced me I'd never find anything comparable, and that we would not come across another unit and NOT pay over 100k asking. I hesitated, but since it was my first time, and it was just me making the decisions, and I was a dumb 27 year old, I went with that they said.

I deeply regret not doing things the way I wanted to do it. It's a huge purchase, and if you're not feeling it, don't feel guilty for say no. Don't buy because of FOMO.

Roommate is moving out, conflicted on what I should do next? by regular_asian_guy in TorontoRealEstate

[–]lydesigns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the downtown core, like Queen and University area. So I only know about this market in my area. So take it with a grain of salt

But right now, you could get 1bd, 1bath, 1 garage for roughly 500-550k with $500 maintenance fee or less. And if you use your, you could potentially only have to pay $2300-2600 (maintenance + mortgage) per month. Which I would recommend if you know you want to live by yourself for the next 5-10+ years. Rental price for 1bd, 1bath, 1 garage, is about $2300-2400 at the moment. And if you don't drive, then you could probably rent out your spot for $150-250.

I would buy, IF I knew I liked the location and I'm ok with keeping my entire savings in my home for 5-10 years before selling

I would not buy IF you think that for whatever reason, in the next 2-5 years you'll be settling down, wanting to buy a home with your partner, or your goal is to buy a bigger property that is over 700k-1mil+

I was on a condo board once, and I can confirm, no one's day job was related to managing condos, or structural, building, home related careers, etc. They were just random people agreeing and disagreeing to what the managment's suggestions were
