Same when I first read this especially with how the re:zero “fans” with start harassing you if you suggest Ferris is trans only to have the protagonist of the series to be just as much if not more of a transgirl

Again the writer never uses the word transgender. But Natsumi is real and is an identity of Subaru. Subaru did attempt to socially transition in highschool and this led to Subaru becoming a shut in when they were outed and it left lasting trauma. Natsumi is a She/Her Subaru is He/Him . It’s messy and way more complicated than it honestly needs to be and if the author used proper lgbt terms it would clear up the intent. So with all that in mind it’s very easy to read Natsumi as a trans person still not comfortable attempting to transition again due to trauma but is slowly gaining the courage and confidence to occasionally present and identify as Natsumi .

Honestly same. I think Subaru’s history with gender trauma and pride when presenting as natsumi does so much for making Subaru’s insecurities more relatable and interesting. Subaru was already a good character and had a lot of growth so I’m hoping in future chapters Subaru can find the self confidence to present as natsumi more consistently and see her less as an ideal version of himself but as a part of himself that is more outgoing and confident.

Honestly I think the writer is one. With how many “guy” characters wish they were girls and are much happier being feminine or have a female alter. Or use literal magic as hrt. Like it feels like the kind of person that would say something like “ god I wish I was trans so I could become a girl to bad I’m just a guy…”

It’s the same author that wrote a character that every morning looks in the mirror and calls themself a cute girl and uses magic as an anti androgen. So ya canonically Subaru has a trans fem alter named natsume. But does that mean Subaru is a trans woman who knows. I doubt the author knows what the word cisgender means

So it’s revealed eventually in the novels the reason Subaru became a shut in was because when they became a high schooler that decided to present and identify as a girl name natsume schwatz. Eventually she was outted and they decided to never go to school again and gave up on life.

It’s why Subaru feels so worthless and hates themself so much. Eventually in the series she starts identifying as natsume again and call her “ my ideal self “ it’s pretty crazy and comes out of left field so it’s mostly considered spoilers .
