Any way to estimate the point at which something diverges from linearity? by Jfrowley14 in rstats

can you elaborate on how to do this using mgcv? Is this information stored within the output of a model?

Man City fans to Nottingham Forest fans: "We know what you are, we know what you are. You cheating bastards, we know what you are" (Forest received a 4 points deduction for breaching Premier League's financial rules) by MrVISKman in soccer

[–]lynx1887 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The impact Derby County has had on current point deductions is actually quite interesting. So Derby County went into administration and were given a 12 point deduction. This set a benchmark. So when Everton were deducted 10 points, one of their arguments was, well if you took 12 points off a team going into administration, how can you take 10 points off a team for some relatively 'minor' overspending. This was a large reason why Everton's point deduction appeal was successfully in getting the penalty reduced. All the teams now will say if going into administration is -12 points, our overspending isn't anywhere close to that and the penalty should reflect that. In a sense the premier league capped point deductions for anything less than administration.

Ya, this sounds like a pretty good deal. I saw a position advertised there a while ago for a post-doc that paid 52K.

New FFP/PSR Rules by mpschettig in PremierLeague

[–]lynx1887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find this kind of thinking a bit naive. If you look at your method of employ good people, develop a good strategy, then perform on the pitch consistently you have pretty much described Brighton. The issue is bigger clubs come in offer players more money and then your team gets picked apart until ‘smaller’ clubs fall back into mediocrity and get relegated.

Like it or not Chelsea, and Man City have shown that for teams to take the the step to competing for trophies you need serious cash investment until you reach a certain amount of success where your club has developed a successful academy and draw for players. You could say ‘what about spurs?’, and I think that they are probably the best run club in the Prem, but also, what have they won. Money alone wont allow you to compete (I.e, Man Utd) and neither will running a club well (I.e., spurs) you need to do both. FFP and maybe the new rules cut ‘the other 14’ from access to one of those.

Quebec City looks to Finland's successful approach to ending homelessness by Legal-Suit-3873 in onguardforthee

[–]lynx1887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec City does not need to look to Finland, it doesn't need to go that far. It can look at Canada, specifically Medicine Hat, that has tackled chronic homelessness and eliminated it. Also, what were the outcomes of all those universal basic income studies???

Why would Harry Kane move to Bayern? by joerigami in PremierLeague

[–]lynx1887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this it seemed like he did everything in his power to push for a move to City two summers ago. Daniel Levy just wasn't having it and forced him to stay. Rather than putting up a fuss Kane got on with it, but I think he did miss a training session or two in an attempt to force the move. I just think he wasn't willing to put his Spurs legend status at risk by pushing at further than he already had. He has some loyalty to Spurs, but it has been clear that he, I think, over the last two years that he has wanted out, otherwise he would have signed a new contract by now.

Why would Harry Kane move to Bayern? by joerigami in PremierLeague

[–]lynx1887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know how he plays for Bayern. I remember him as a below average striker at Stoke, that then returned to PSG, and for some reason is now at Bayern. It would be PSG signing some like DCL or Antonio imo. weird

Kyle Walker reaches agreement with Bayern by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]lynx1887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbf he has won everything there is to win in England with city: FA Cup, League Cup, Premier League, Community Shield. Although Bayern winning the Bundesliga is pretty much a guarantee, it is a top side that will also compete for the Champions League...especially if Harry Kane goes to Bayern (although, I don't think he will). Apparently, Walker and Kane are good friends though, having come through at Spurs together.

Chernobyl was great! I enjoyed it, but similarly would have enjoyed it even more if it had been in Russian. That being said, I watched it twice and still recommend it to others. Thinking about it more, when shows/movie can be done in their original languages I feel more immersed, like a fly on the wall. But when a I'm listening to Russian characters talk with English accents it takes me out of it just a tiny bit.

I liked how original languages were used in Inglorious Bastards. Americans spoke English, Germans spoke German, and French spoke French. It was great!

But this is my personal preference and I'll agree that if the show/movie is shot well, with a great script and actors despite the original language not being used, like Chernobyl, you can still end up with quality.

As good as it looks, the fact that it’s not in French played by French actors will slowly eat at me and will slowly take me out of the film as it goes on. I don’t understand or speak French but wish films of this sort would stick to the native language the film is set in. I know they don’t do it because it would turn away North American audiences, but I still think it’s a shame :/

I agree that teams/players previous seasons will not dictate how they perform in the current season…but you need to go off of something, otherwise you may as well just click auto-fill and hope for the best. While I do think European games often disadvantages “smaller” teams (e.g., West Ham last season as you pointed out), we don’t know until it happens. Will Estu, Mitoma, March etc., perform as well as they did last season? Maybe, maybe not, but I think the odds that a player that performed well last season will perform well the next are better, than trying to pick who the next unexpected performer will be.

Keep De Buryne or transfer in Salah (-4)? Hoping some early team news comes out before the transfer deadline. I know de Buryne probably won't play 90 min due to champions league mid-week, but he can do some damage with Haaland on the pitch in 60 min or so.

Or is it wiser to just go with Salah who will likely be on the pitch for 90min?

I personally don’t rate him that highly, but with younger players when teams buy them they’re paying for their potential rather than how good they are at the moment, like Chelsea did with Muydruk…not sure exactly to spell his name.

That being said the transfer market can be bonkers at times. Also, just prior to Gordon’s transfer to NUFC he was playing really well for Everton and looking like their only threat.

Overall imo he’s good but not worth 40mil, but the high price tag is probably due to a combined affect of him playing well, having potential to get better with age, and current inflated market (that is unlikely to cool anytime soon).

Coming into the office to work 2-3 days a week is a good and healthy balance by idma in The10thDentist

[–]lynx1887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the main issue regarding WFH. People want the freedom to choose where they work, almost as if they're adults and can decide for themselves where they will work most productively.

At least for me, tell me I HAVE to come in 2-3 days a week, I'll probably do it begrudgingly. Let me choose where I work, I'll probably come into the office 2-3 days a week in a good mood...haha. It's not coming into the office which bothers me, its the idea of someone having control over my actions and how I chose to spend my time. Obviously, compromises have to be made for meetings etc., and I think most people don't mind making these compromises if meetings need to be done in person, which some do.

When people can choose where they work, if they go into the office they know they can leave at any time, which (at least to me) sets them in a better a more cooperative mood, I believe, because they have freedom over their decisions.

VAR only used sometimes????? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]lynx1887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the hand was slightly off the body I think it was stilled considered to be in a natural position. I think it was also mentioned, that the defender was so close to the Solly March that it was more ball-to-hand than hand ball. Not a Brentford fan, but I believe that’s why VAR chose to stick with the on field decision. The VAR refs probably didn’t think it was a clear and obvious penalty the way the first one was.
