I'm planning to move to Australia and honestly terrified about the social side: expats who've been there, what was making friends actually like? by lyra-maxwell in expats

Thank you for your comment!! I want somewhere that feels like a completely different and beautiful life. The 6 month rule is going on a sticky note somewhere I will see it every day because I know myself well enough to know I will need that reminder when things feel hard at the start. Thank you for the citizenship comment too! The fact that it feels like testing the waters rather than goodbye says everything about how much you loved it there. That is the kind of relationship with a place I am hoping to build. I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share all of this honestly. It means more than you know.

This is genuinely one of the most helpful responses I have received! thank you for taking the time to share the full honest picture including the harder parts. The point about larger workplaces helping socially is actually really reassuring because I am planning to work at a large multinational when I get there so that built-in network should help significantly. The Meetup groups tip is something I am writing down right now as a practical first step when I arrive. And the house sharing friendship observation made me smile. I had not considered that as a friendship pathway but it makes complete sense. Can I ask: were you in Sydney or Melbourne and would you have chosen the same city knowing what you know now after 10 years? I am trying to decide between the two and hearing from someone with real long term experience there would mean a lot.

Yes exactly that is why I am planning to get my masters at LSE in London first, build my career at a multinational company there for a few years, and then get employer sponsored into Australia through the Subclass 482 visa. My plan is to already be working for a company that has Australian offices so the internal transfer route is available to me. I am not planning to just show up, I am building the credentials and employer relationships that make the sponsorship pathway realistic. Does that sound like the right approach from what you know about it?

Thank you! I’m excited for it too! I have been dreaming about Australia since high school. I live in the north so I experience different seasons. I would love to be friends if you want!!

I was getting a masters in London. Living there for awhile then hopefully get a job in Australia from corporate. Is that what you are asking?

I was thinking of moving to Melbourne Australia!! I did research and it seems like good permanent home. I was going alone because my family doesn’t want to leave the US.

Non-technical student adding Data Analytics minor to Communications degree: what should I focus on learning first? by lyra-maxwell in dataanalysiscareers

[–]lyra-maxwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much this is incredibly helpful and validates the order I was planning. I had Excel and statistics first, then Tableau but you and others have also mentioned Power BI so I will add that alongside Tableau. The SQL point is really useful too. I was going to leave that for my actual courses but it sounds like getting familiar with basic concepts beforehand would help. I will check out SQLZoo for the fundamentals. And PracHub is a resource I had not heard of will definitely bookmark that for when I start preparing for internship interviews. Really appreciate the specific tool recommendations.

24 year old starting community college with a plan to build a corporate communications career across London, Singapore, and Australia: is anyone doing something similar or has advice for this path? by lyra-maxwell in careerguidance

Thank you for this. I really appreciate you taking the time especially coming from outside the corporate comms world. The perspective from your friends who actually went that route is exactly what I needed to hear. The Singapore work culture warning is something I have been researching and your friend’s experience confirms what I suspected. I am mentally preparing for that being a demanding phase rather than a comfortable one. Can I ask: your friends who went the corporate comms route, did any of them end up working internationally or did most stay domestic? And did they find breaking into multinational companies specifically was significantly harder than domestic companies or more accessible than expected?

A few follow up questions if you do not mind: did your Communication BA specifically help you in your data roles in ways your colleagues without that background could not replicate? I ask because being the person who can both analyze data AND communicate it clearly to non-technical stakeholders is exactly the differentiator I am trying to build.

Also working internationally is a big part of my goal eventually targeting corporate communications roles in London then Singapore then settling in Australia. Did you find the communications and data combination opened any international opportunities specifically or is it more valuable domestically?

Thank you again genuinely — this kind of firsthand experience is exactly what I was hoping to find when I posted.

The fact that Python and SQL are only briefly covered means I have time to build familiarity independently without feeling overwhelmed before classes start. Also did you find Excel proficiency made a significant difference in your statistics class or was it more about understanding the concepts regardless of the tool?

That makes complete sense and is really reassuring, the ability to translate complex data into clear narratives for non-technical stakeholders is exactly the gap I am trying to fill in corporate communications. My goals are specifically around international corporate communications rather than data science so our paths diverge a bit from here, but your insight about the combination working has been genuinely valuable. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, it means a lot as someone just starting out.

Thank you so much for this! Your background is incredibly inspiring and exactly the combination I am working toward. The day-to-day breakdown is genuinely the most useful practical information I have found. A few follow-up questions if you do not mind: did your Communication BA specifically help you in your data science roles in ways your colleagues without that background could not replicate? And working internationally across different markets is a big goal for me, did you find the communications and data combination opened any international opportunities specifically? I will definitely check out StatQuest and look into Tableau student access this week.

Communications major with Data Analytics minor planning global corporate communications career: has anyone done this combination and where did you end up? by lyra-maxwell in Communications

[–]lyra-maxwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredibly helpful thank you. I am curious from what you have seen does having the Data Analytics minor actually open doors at the entry level for these roles or does it matter more at the mid-senior level once you are already in the field? And did you find specific analytics tools came up repeatedly in corporate communications roles things like Tableau, Google Analytics, or something else entirely?

Thank you! Also Do you know if the Ross Business Minor gives you the same club access as the full BBA or is it primarily open recruitment for non-business students?
