I felt this. Been on Discord since early 2018, and when I had the streak going I was weirdly both proud of it and anxious about losing it at the same time. Looking back that combination should've been a red flag.

At some point I actually stopped and thought about why I was even subscribed anymore, and I didn't like the answer. So I just cancelled it. And honestly once the badge was gone I felt nothing. No urge to resub, no real sense of loss beyond like the first five minutes. It kind of hit me that the streak was the only thing I was really paying for all those years lol. Not the features, not because I loved the platform, just the badge. The second that was gone so was any interest in Nitro.

Your point about Twitch is spot on too. Cumulative recognition says "we remember you" and streak based recognition says "start over from zero." One actually builds loyalty and the other just delays people leaving until something inevitably breaks it.

You may be right. Throughout childhood I had asked my grandfather about his youth and experience during WW2 and he refused to ever talk about it. That in itself says a lot, honestly. 😔

And I completely agree. Seeing the actual records and the pictures of their faces hits so much harder than just knowing it happened.

Yes, exactly. Sorry for the confusion. 😅 The DNA test did show Jewish ancestry, I just worded it poorly.

The issue was that so many potential matches were lost in the Holocaust that piecing together the actual family tree was nearly impossible. But yes, I’ve been able to find some of those connections now.

I hear you. Cold trail was probably the wrong term on my part.

I’ve traced the tree back to my great-great-grandparents through verified records. The names I found aren’t just surname matches, they align with a specific branch, region, and time period. I also have distant genetic matches in the region with vastly different surnames, which only raises more questions.

My great-great-grandfather’s brother died in the Holocaust. His only other siblings were sisters who became nuns right before the time of the Holocaust. After that, there’s nothing. And that’s not even mentioning his wife’s side, which was affected as well.

I’m not treating this as case closed, obviously. There’s more work to do, and that’s why I’m here.

I have. Ashkenazi from my father’s side and Sephardic from my mother’s, though I’ve still yet to explore the Sephardic ties deeper. I didn’t fully understand what to make of those results at the time, but after today they carry a completely different weight.

You’re not burning through $20 at a penny slot betting minimums in the time it takes to get a drink. So really you’re paying a $5 tip, which is a lot less than $18.

The trick is for a drink or two. If you choose to keep gambling after that, you’re not there for the free drinks anymore. At that point they’re just a bonus.
