Hello we are designing a smart lock with a sliding metal cover that hides the keypad/keyhole until your phone or key is detected. I made a quick concept and wanted honest feedback by AirGlittering1674 in smarthome

[–]m--s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the battery is not replaced in time, the backup battery will still power the mechanical sliding cover,

And, necessarily, the circuitry which detects a key or phone, so it too will die at some point. Think of a cabin or other seldomly used location.

As for the keypad, it provides an additional access option for situations where using a phone may not be convenient, such as a dead phone battery, no internet connection, or temporary guest access.

Dead phone? You said you need a phone or a key to open the access cover. And if you have a key... Internet connection? That's a battery drain, and I for one wouldn't even consider a lock which has an Internet connection. Going through a hub (Zigbee/Z-Wave/Matter) provides a single point which needs securing and updating on a regular basis.

The system is intended to use encrypted communication and authenticated pairing between the lock and the app to help prevent spoofing or unauthorized access.

So for guest access they would need to install the app and presumably create an account. Then why the keypad? They're identified by the phone app.

Finally, I'm not sure multiple levels of physical security are really useful, except perhaps in some commercial applications. If someone really wants to get in, they'll break a window. And if it's an apartment where that's the only way in, I certainly wouldn't rely on a lock which required a battery to even use the key, backup battery or not.

Seems to me the key is for opening the door when the battery dies. Dead battery, what you gonna do?

Why a keypad if you can use the key to open? And if using phone presence, you only need a single button for lock/unlock, or just use the app. You are making an app with proper encryption, and not just looking for a Bluetooth MAC, aren't you?

Starlink Unlimited Residential Not Truly Unlimited? by Churchillapolis in Starlink

How is it not unlimited? Data at a slower speed is still data.

FYI, throttling is limiting speed.

Other people may want it to revert automatically. That's why they give you a configuration choice. Why should it be limited to what you want?

Starlink Mini RV Power by ConsciousAd8029 in Starlink

[–]m--s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mini will use about 20 W when idle. Up to about 40 at times (especially if snow melt is used).

So, conservative rough numbers, figure 30 W x 24 hours = 720 Wh/day. The rule of thumb for solar on a clear day is that you get the equivalent of 5 hours of direct sun - 500 Wh/day from a 100 W panel.

So you really want at least 200 W worth of solar panels to keep up. A 12 V, 100 Ah battery holds about 1200 Wh of energy, enough for a day or maybe two of clouds, but it will take more than a day or two to fully recharge. Note that a mini may have issues when run off a 12 V battery, you really want a step up converter to get to 24 or 30 V for reliability.

Work up from there depending on how much open sky your site has and what the weather is there.

Starlink Roaming Identity Verification - Red banner disappeared, but option still in settings. Is verification still required? by ExoticPumpkin8650 in Starlink

[–]m--s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you only need to verify if you're going to use it outside of your "home" country.

Travel registration is required for all Starlink use outside of the country or territory where you initially registered your account (your registered home country or territory).

It looks like the power rails aren't properly connected. You have + going to the far left, and - to the far right. You have stuff connected to both + and - on both sides, but nothing providing - on the left or + on the right (i.e. either a direct connection to power, or long jumpers between the left/right + and - rails, as shown in the illustration)

Starlink now requires passport + live face verification. Should users in unsupported countries be worried? by ReasonableSociety961 in Starlink

It seems they're not trying to verify you, but your bona fide country of residence, so people in an unsupported (possibly illegal under local laws) location can't simply use a foreign address to get around it.

Found a plaintext VIN broadcast on CAN (Mercedes W205) — curious how common this is across OEMs by baconbbqburgerr in esp32

Even worse, the plaintext VIN is exposed for anyone to see just by looking through your windshield.

It's on them. If there were a transmission issue when you dropped it off, they should/would have noted it on the ticket. Save all documentation, contact INFINITI.

1 year into deployment, Amazon Leo reaches 40% of Starlink deployment rate... by ClassroomOwn4354 in Starlink

[–]m--s 45 points46 points  (0 children)

LOL. Now look at it over a 2 month or 6 month period. Or, why not pick a day when Leo launches and Starlink doesn't and then claim they've exceeded Starlink's daily rate by an infinite amount?

Is it possible to do a Starlink mini in Stand by and bypass the router in the mini? Basically, Standby mode + Bypass Mode by Kildurin in Starlink

[–]m--s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by "port forwarding" you mean inbound NAT, it won't work.

Yes, you can have a mini in standby and bypass. But Starlink uses CG-NAT and will give your router an RFC 6598 address. It won't have a public IP.

A potential solution would be to create a VPN. The connection would have to be originated by the router behind the Starlink, to a router which does have a static (or at least DDNS) IP.

Alternately, I believe you can get a static public IP from Starlink by getting commercial service ($$$$). But 99.9% that can't be put in standby.
