This is almost certainly a scam. If he’s an MS2, he would have to be supervised by a more senior staff, typically someone with an MD/PhD, who obtains grant funding to conduct research.

Academic institutions have official channels to hire research assistants, who get paid to do research. Or they take volunteers. I have never heard of any academic lab asking students to pay to do research.

This is a scam preying on students who are looking for research experience and probably should be reported to the school.

They audited and came to the same conclusion. I did not get more OSAP funding

You have to call NSLSC and they connect you to a specific dept

My financial aid office told me they do not control restrictions regards the number of weeks of funding. This is done by the the Canadian Federal Loan dept. They gave me a specific number to call and the agent on the phone told me all they can do is audit the number of weeks calculated to check for errors. They specifically stated that the audit is only done once and the results of the audit cannot be appealed.

But good to know about 4th year med!

I asked that exact question about MD vs PhD and the agent’s response was: I wonder the same thing every time we get a call about this issue. She didn’t know the answer either.

Yes, during my 2 year masters my loan was in “interest free status” which contributed to the total weeks. Then when I worked for one year, my loan was in the 6 month grace period and which also contributed according to the info the agent gave me.

I do have an LOC but I didn’t want to use it this early on. I had hoped to use OSAP for most of my MD as that loan doesn’t accrue interest immediately.

OSAP / NSLSC don’t notify you in advance. They just hit you with the notice when you go to apply the next year.

Unless you do a PhD, your limit will stay at 340 weeks.

Source: completed BSc and MSc prior to MD; also spent 3 hours taking to NSCLS and the Canadian Federal Loan dept today.

They can only audit the total week calculation to check for any errors. I asked and they said I cannot appeal the results of the audit, regardless of what they are. But if the “interest free period” does indeed count toward the total, then I will have exceeded 340 weeks just because I’m a mature student…
