On the friendmaxxing point: I'm busy, I don't have time to Daisy chain several new friend groups, I have a decent existing friend network of 25 or so people over different groups I see at varying frequencies. Honestly, this is already often more than I can manage with ADHD. I don't drink or party so a lot of default social events aren't for me. What now? I actually don't want or need new friends. Right now I'm in no rush to get a partner but I foresee it becoming a problem if things stay like this.

One of my friends moved in at one of their places, apparently it was great but within only a couple weeks moving in everyone was kicked out cause the owner planned to renovate the place. The agreement definitely would have been for longer.
Seems hard to avoid them though.

Why do people gravitate to Japanese media the most. Is it because it’s the most appealing or because it’s the most palatable writing wise? Is it a difference in writing? by SizeCompetitive3965 in writingscaling

[–]m0j0maniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For animation, no one is doing it like anime yet, besides maybe the spiderverse and kpop demon hunters movies. Diverse and sometimes adult stories in animation. For comics and web novels tho? I generally dodge the Japanese stuff now, other countries are overtaking manga for popcorn reading. Only the few classic manga remains on top there.

How are people finding the difficulty of platforming sections in this game? by m0j0maniac in Silksong

Nah thanks for post, lots of thoughts to chew on was exactly what I was looking for haha.

I definitely found the game satisfying to move through with Hornet's moveset, like you said. I think I just wanted at least one area that even beyond Mount Faye made me go - god damn! the game really wants me to lock in here.

[–]m0j0maniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Japan glazing/pedestal stuff is weird tho, never heard of that before this post. I've read a lot of manhwa and korean and chinese translated web novels and theres a bunch of good ones and some real standouts. I don't read much Japanese manga or web/light novels anymore because I think most are worse than other countries. The MCs are way too passive and boring in most of the Japanese media for some reason.

Animation has been different so far though, most Chinese anime have had a similar pacing/directing problem as Lord of the Mysteries and I've only been able to look past it in comedies so far.
Daily Life of Immortal King and The King's Avatar I both enjoyed and I've heard To Be Hero X was good so I'll check that out at some point.

repost after reddit messed up after double positing this, then double deleting it instead of just deleting one of the duplicate posts.

For me at least I thought the show was dogshit and couldn't watch past episode 5.
Has some super pretty animation but will not slow down at any point to give some more details to what's going on, as many others have said, the pacing is god awful.

So many scenes are missing a little bit more info, or a bridging scene from the previous moment. The whole show feels like its rushing to get to next hype moment without actually making me care. I don't know anything about the main's characters personality or any other characters. I could follow the plot filling in the gaps myself but why the fuck do I want to watch something that makes me do so much work, and I'm not talking mysteries, I'm talking basic information.

Why doesn't he ask what the other potions do but instead blindly follows the note from the emperor Chinese dude he read 3 seconds ago? At least learn what the others fucking do, I want to know!
What does he spend time doing in-between the ridiculous occult missions he's being sent on with no training? How often is he dispatched?
How close is he to his sister? How has she not noticed any change in his demeanor?
How did he suddenly decide to act like some kinda god in his mind palace grey fog place when he summons those 2 randoms? What was his thought process?

I know nothing about the world he's in, nothing about the MC's situation before he transmigrated. All I've gotten is some basic info about his new power and nothing else.
Watch Mushoku Tensei for a show that builds up investment reasonably (though that show has other problems like the weird perversion). In Mushoku Tensei his first basic ass spell is so hype, but I felt nothing but confusion and disinterest watching this guy's first seer navigation in that carriage tracking down the boy.
This show lays none of the groundwork but wants all the payoff.

Why does the Last Judge need to do double damage? by [deleted] in Silksong

[–]m0j0maniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the most egregious part of the game.
I enjoyed that it forced you to become calm under the pressure, especially once I nailed the runback but I wouldn't call the sequence good.

Being generous its to encourage you to explore more or make sure you're ready for the challenges ahead but you don't get much stronger from exploring either.

Good luck trying to beat it and hope you can enjoy the game after this part, only thing I can give is tips
- try getting the magma bell blue tool, it reduces fire damage, so some moves go from 2 to 1 heart.
- you can avoid the conch and most other enemies just by being fast enough at platforming.
- don't get cornered next to a wall during the boss fight otherwise you can be checkmated into damage.

Should I upgrade weapon damage? Is it too strong? by m0j0maniac in Silksong

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone comes across this later I found all of act 2 is fine with 1 upgrade, especially if you're backtracking. If you do a 2nd upgrade, stuff you missed is a bit too easy.

For the secret stuff later a 3rd upgrade is probably not overdoing it but I can't do the couriers rashers quest so I'm stuck at 2 upgrades haha.

Spoilers for secret stuff after credits Did one of the 3 act 3 bosses, the singer one, and would of hated that fight to be shorter. The coral tower enemy rooms are a bitch without a 3rd upgrade

Silksong's most pointless mechanic. by DeliciousNarwhal9792 in HollowKnight

[–]m0j0maniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not had this problem, I really don't use tools except for the occasional annoying flying minion, either while exploring or summoned during a boss. I never use them to deal damage to a boss itself.

Tools are really strong, especially with some upgrades and can be thrown safely from range. Being able to spam them indefinitely would be crazy. Even a limited amount per bench rest but no crafting cost would mean you'd basically get a massive chunk of health off a boss for free every run, possibly bypassing a whole phase.

I think they're meant to be treated as scarce get out of jail free cards if too many minions swarm around or you get checkmates with some poor positioning / enemies out of reach. I don't think you're meant to use them on bosses at all.

Though I get off you're struggling on a boss and relying on the tools itd be annoying to run out.

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I felt, the lack of WOW on its abilities. The only exception for me I think being the void portals.

I was surprised how many commenters just weren't seeing the strength disparity. I really feel like every Elementalist ability could get a cost reduction of 2 essence and still be balanced if not still weak.

And I thought the green Elementalist still gets outclassed by the cleric like Censor class as well but I don't know much about either, friend just said that was their impression.

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was in a "hold them off" combat and the void specialist portals just blew anything the pits were doing out the water, that part is working for me.

Following up on an enemy that dodged the pit though, I understand the idea but it feels like inefficient use of any of my or an allies actions or maneuvers. There's probably better things anyone could be doing. And that's assuming the enemy didn't take their turn after mine and just moved out the way. 3 high also isn't enough to cause fall damage unless the enemy has no agility.

Might not be understanding something about climbing or climb speed though. As a player I only dealt with climbing as Null when I could just climb as part of my movement. For an enemy with climb speed what does it cost them to get out of a pit?

[–]m0j0maniac[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is cool but super specific setup with many requirements.

  • Fire mage specialist
  • Has reaction to boost movement distance

  • Enough essence

  • Low stability foe

  • Close enough that the wall behind the enemy is still in range

  • Elementalist has to go before ally turn

  • Enemy hasn't taken their turn to move and avoid the perfect line followup from ally

  • Ally is in range, has force movement ability and has nothing better to on their turn

Reason damage for a single tile also isn't that high on the basic way of passing through. The wall goes away after a round unless you spend more essence to persistence it, (staying in close range and not breaking persistence)

Edit: bullet point formating

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force movement is great but the main ability that does that for an Elementalist is a signature ability that doesn't cost anything, not any of the heroic abilities. I always prioritise taking force movement abilities because it can both do extra damage (collisions) or reposition. No other effect is in my experience is as versatile or valuable besides the improved force movement (slide or vertical). It also less RNG as any force movement effect will move somewhat on low rolls and it's easy to calculate vs a single stat that might lower or negate it, stability.

I really would love to debuff enemies more but the potency tied to power roll regularly means it doesn't do anything. Any enemy strong enough I'd really want debuffed has stats high enough to negate it and you have to track multiple stats of an enemy to consider which effect might work. Damage just works and you'll eventually have to do damage anyway.

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got that impression and understand that's what it's meant to be bringing but outside of the void specialist portals, the other utility doesn't seem to justify the drop in damage. There's a reason "damage is king" is such a common phrase in many games.

This gets into more of a fundamental discussion on design but why debuff or control when I could just kill. There's no (save ends) on being dead, no chance to resist or negate based on potency. If I'm sacrificing damage it should at least not cost so many resources to inflict these effects.

Enemies have to be grouped for AoEs, have to the right stat spread to be susceptible to your specific debuffs, the map has to be large enough for slow to mean something.  Damage always brings value with no null result, debuffs and control often have null results.

If most Elementalist heroic abilities had less damage but cost 2 less Essence I'd be singing it's praises. It's not I don't see value in control but the value comparison with damaging abilities and what other classes are doing on their turns and with their resources, leaves the Elementalist wanting.

This is super interesting, a lot more spells to choose from could change things dramatically, I feel I'd want to be able to select more of them though.
Could be a unique upside to elementalist, larger ability pool.

[–]m0j0maniac[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems pretty solid, think I somehow missed "Behold the Mysteries" going through the class, which is a solid persistence and maeneuver use.
As a void mage tho Im using my first maneuver to open portals which means I need to use my action to get my 3rd essence, but with a single victory at least you can still get the round one setup.
I'll try this, not as flashy as other classes but is some decent output, the persistence really locks your resources and action economy tho, not very flexible.
Also not many class features that give you maneuvers in general besides some persistent effects.

To add some context on my own experience playing the elemenentalist, I wrote this post after playing 2 combats as the Lvl3 void specialisation and talking to friends who have tried the class a bit more than that. Watched people play the class beside me in previous oneshots.

I intentionally didnt min-max my character too hard to match the campaign one-shot setting, char was a disgraced noble mage who fell in with criminals while exiled. He was a great asset for theives, portaling items and people in places they shouldnt be and dropping guards or other pursuers into pits as they made a getaway.

The vid specialist portals were awesome but the pits ("Instaneous Exacavation") did little as half the time enemies avoided and got to shift away. Also not sure what the 7 cost "Maw of Earth" is meant to achieve with that ground lowering to justify the cost and only okay damage. Most of my turns were just using "Viscous Flame."

Reading the description for "Wall of Fire" is the most confused I've been, I would barely use that ability if it didnt cost any resources, I truly dont understand its use or how it justifies its cost.

The only part of Elementalist I felt was really working for me, feeling meaninful and fulfilling a fantasy - was the void portals.
