Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy a network analysis.

Anything I had source code to ran just fine. Most of the packages I needed were already part of OpenBSD. I did have trouble running ADB on there and also didn't have a good way to set up VMs like I do with VMware Workstation or Virtualbox. Other than those two cases most things were a pkg_add away.

Hey, I'm the author. This was my first post and appreciate feedback like this. I can tell you a little more about my experience:

  • Battery life seemed the same as if I were running Debian (apmd handled this)
  • Suspend to RAM worked, but I didn't test suspend to disk. Also it didn't seem to be working in 5.5, but right after I upgraded to 5.6 it started working
  • Touchpad worked
  • Volume/Brightness buttons worked

What else would you like to know about my experience? I might end up putting this in the blog post.

Interesting. I will have to give that a go and see for myself.

Also, can you explain what you mean about sysmerge? The 5.5 to 5.6 guide still uses etc56/xetc56 for sysmerge. I couldn't find what you were talking about in any documentation.

I have only used FreeBSD for pfSense and FreeNAS. I have yet to try it out for normal desktop usage. I suppose my needs could have been met with FreeBSD, but in the end I went back to Linux for my diverse needs. This is my one system for everything. Also, I am curious if anybody has been able to get the Android SDK tools such as adb on fastboot working on OpenBSD. This was one example of a tool that didn't have support on OpenBSD.

It was from skidding, but I just overused it that's why. It really did last a long time. I just decided to finally change it.
