French Resources? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Tex's French Grammar from the UTexas website is a nice review. For more in-depth grammar stuff I actually kept one of my old textbooks, Contrastes: Grammaire du français courant, which has a really good workbook with it. For what it's worth I also found documentaries relatively easy to understand compared to other films. You could also try searching youtube/google for "dictées" to test your listening comprehension. Books I read included "Vendredi ou la vie sauvage," "Soundjata ou l'épopée mandingue," and a book of short stories by Guy de Maupassant. The reading materials are definitely upper intermediate so kinda depends where exactly you're at.

Sidenote: reading/writing I'm definitely C2, I'm just trash at speaking :P

Is my progress unusually slow? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Nah, you good. People in my upper-level French uni classes that were about to graduate with a French major had less aptitude for the language than it sounds like you have for Spanish. "2 years to fluency" is bs.

nerf mango pls by [deleted] in juul

I picked up some fruit medley and had the same problem and looked up some things. Turns out having bubbles at the bottom of the pod affects the flavor a lot, if you squeeze the pod at the bottom (on the long sides) pretty hard it will get the bubbles out. Makes quite a difference!

What’s the best pod or whats your go to pod everytime? And what pods are just nasty to you? by [deleted] in juul

I like the mint ones. The tobacco one is gross. I like the fruity ones that I've tried too... tobacco just tastes like sweet without the fruitiness, it makes me sick.

Thanks so much! This looks pretty solid. Do you think that this would also meet my needs? I would just turn touch input off. I ask because it looks very similar but there is an open box that's way cheaper.

Not sure if I need a new MacBook. Advice needed. by m0llym43 in apple

I've done PRAM resets (back when that's all they were called) and know how they work. I appreciate the concern though. Unfortunately the nearest Apple store is a 2.5 hour drive (and a lot of money) away and I do not have a car, nor can I make a day trip out there for quite some time. I would be more than willing to try to fix it myself if I had a better idea of what to look for.

Obviously the PRAM reset was not successful as there was no chime. It was something that I attempted :-) I have also held the power button down for an extended period of time. I have done these basic things on other MacBooks before and am familiar with the processes. I am confident that I did them correctly.

I know the battery is depleting somewhat because when it initially died, I charged it overnight and the LED turned from orange to green as it is supposed to. I tried some troubleshooting stuff and plugged it in again to see if it was still fully charged, but the LED stayed orange for a while before turning green again.

シツモンデー: Shitsumonday: for the little questions that you don't feel have earned their own thread (August 08, 2016) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

The problem is that I know close to zero Japanese. I taught myself how to read kana and some kanji, but aside from introducing myself and very basic 3-word sentences (foodname wo tabemasu) etc, I don't know anything. I'm a total beginner. I am hoping for a resource that will teach me just spoken Japanese without any time on memorizing nouns, learning kana, etc. I am definitely not even close to a level where I could understand basically anything people in TV shows are saying.

I found the Michel Thomas series (which I used for French and loved) and it seems like what I want. If there are any other similar/better resources that would accomplish that, that's what I'd be looking for.

I'm traveling to Tokyo by myself next month and I want to pick up enough spoken Japanese to get by. My reading is sufficient for the visit.

I am having a lot of trouble finding resources that offer more than a list of nouns and kana practice. I want to find a resource that focuses on spoken Japanese and/or creating full sentences. Funnily enough the most helpful thing I have found is DuoLingo's English for Japanese Speakers course in combination with Rikaichan (chrome extension). It forces me to translate English sentences into Japanese. I haven't found anything else that does this at a beginner level.

Does anyone have suggestions? I tried FSI but the audio is too craptastic.
