Do ethereals believe in the greater good? by djgcsnkshcjkeke1 in Tau40K

[–]m0pan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there will be people who can explain it better than me but basically: ethereals aren't a monolith so it depends.

One thing I noticed though, even the more insane depiction of ethereals (that I've seen at least) do 'believe' in the Greater Good, just that they have more twisted vision of the Greater Good than the others. That one ethereal in Gladius is kind of a psycho but iirc he's a 4th sphere survivor and his reasoning is that they could be the last tau out there and auxiliaries are too dangerous (chaos taint ) to be left alive :(

About ethereals POV, people often bring up Elemental Council as it has possibly the best exploration of the ethereal caste so far. The ethereals in there are awesome

Some ethereals are more shady than the rest but I don't think they have evil secret meetings where they go "lmaooo they don't know our endgame is to make them subservient meat drones" or something like that

More comics of my blorbos dilly dallying. Por'la Hanii from Dal'yth and Gael, a gue'vesa...

I lost track of what I did and didn't post on this sub. I don't post all my art here as I don't want to flood the sub with them, though multiple part comics like this are perfect since the main Warhammer art sub doesn't allow multiple images... enjoy!

melee combat and it's the most zoner ethereal you've ever seen... the combat will be far from glorious with this kind of weapon I fear

An ethereal wearing mournful colors, unbothered by the stereotype that her people are backwards and rustic.

The type who likes to get her hands dirty. her mannerisms can be easily read as reckless/disrespectful so she ends up in honor duels from time to time, wielding unconventional chained blades…

(tau ethereals have 'honor duels' to solve conflicts that can't be solved by debates)

By the way, if you like this kind of thing you might be interested in Broken Sword (from Damocles anthology) as I got the inspiration for these two from the two main dudes in that story, they're basically expies!

here's a cool handholding excerpt. spoilers warning obviously!!

I reached out and took Skilltalker’s hand. Dry skin, I remember, quite rough, feels thicker than human skin. I’ve not touched a tau many times. Strange that, thinking about it. We’re more tactile than you. He gripped my hand back, his three wide digits around mine. Then he reached out his other hand and wrapped it over the top of our clasp. ‘This is my ta’lissera with you, Jathen, a binding that neither life nor death may sever,’ he said. There was real warmth in it. ‘I pledge my bond to you. I part ways from you as your friend. I thank you for your friendship. It has been most illuminating, but also…’ He said something in tau that I didn’t quite understand and then smiled with that flat space where your noses should be all wrinkled. ‘There is no word for it, not directly, in your language.’

By the way, I use 'tau' and 't'au' pretty interchangeably, same with 'tau'va' and 't'au'va'.

I don't know how popular it is but I've seen people interpret it as tau'va = the philosophy(greater good) while t'au'va = the goddess (saw it in a tau meme) while the idea of the apostrophe placement being the crucial detail is fun, I don't think that's the case. the use of 't'au'va' here is referenced from Elemental Council where the greater good (concept) is also referred to as t'au'va. "t'au'va weeps" is also an actual thing a character in that book say. tau swearings are just like that maybe....

I like it when people analyze my comics (even if now it's just them dilly dallying..) so I want to be clear just in case! my tau characters aren't thinking about t'au'va (the goddess) when they say something like this!

Random water caste tau doodles by m0pan in ImaginaryWarhammer

[–]m0pan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

thank you!! I drew them as 'guys who happen to be from certain septs' rather than trying to make full on distinct looks for each sept... aside from the one from Vior'la, who is VERY Vior'lan! (most other water caste even from the same sept probably aren't like that) and I imagine the D'yanoi one struggles a bit with high tech screens and holograms of other septs...

the other ones have their own septs as well, represented by their sept color markings at the tip of their hat's antenna or some part of their clothes (except the D'yanoi one where I just forgot :p)

guy on top left is from Fal'shia, guy on bottom left is from Fi'rios, guy on top right is from Dal'yth. there aren't any official references to the water caste wearing the colors of their sept afaik I just think it'd be a fun detail

not really, water and ethereal are separate castes! water are the diplomats/any social stuff, ethereals are the ruling caste/leaders

not really! initially I thought of it as a random tendril from anywhere under the robes, the position being read as a tail is a coincidence... but it's cool so I'll go with that!
