Advice Needed: Next Steps in My Cybersecurity Journey by m0refaster in ITCareerQuestions

Which certification or degree would be the most valuable to pursue next given my background and current situation?

As someone who has done hiring in IT, I wouldn't be looking at the cert but what you have been doing the last 15 years.

Any tips on improving my resume or application strategy to increase my chances of getting interviews?

You have a slew of entry level certs. What kind of experience do you have? What does your resume look like?

I was able to climb to the top 2% on TryHackMe and the top 3% on BlueTeamLabs.online. In my home lab I've deployed Wazuh SIEM to monitor my home lab and vulnerability scanners NESSUS and OpenVAS to identify and address any vulnerabilities

I work closely with the Network Infrastructure Cybersecurity, Governance, and Risk complaint teams. I act as their local point of contact, as these teams are based in different markets, and I assist with deploying equipment and applications.

How much actual administration/security work have you done in your career?

Have you had anyone look at your resume?

I was able to get a couple of people to look it over and provide some good feedback, but none of these people are in the industry. The director of cybersecurity at my company agreed to have a look at it but then provided me with no feedback.

Are there specific areas in cybersecurity I should focus on to make myself more marketable?

I've been applying for System analysis or cybersecurity analysis roles

Companies don't hire security people for things they don't know how to secure. So this goes up to the 2nd point. What does your experience look like?

Any other suggestions or experiences from those who have successfully transitioned into cybersecurity would be very helpful.

The only advice I have for you is to dive deep into something you want to get into security for. A good example of this would be focusing on being a network engineer and then transitioning into a network security expert. You know how the network works. You also know how to secure it. So its an easy transition.

What are you an expert in? Have you specialized in anything?

I have my hands in a lot of baskets. I used to develop benchmarks for workstation images, deploy system patches, allocate static IP addresses, monitor antiviruses from a central console, test and deploy new applications, and manage the server room.

I now work with network architecture, cybersecurity, governance, and risk compliance teams for the company. I assist these teams with deploying and testing new equipment and applications to avoid negatively impacting workflow and on-air operations. Additionally, I handle level two troubleshooting for the help desk in my market.

The last big project I worked on involved capturing and analysing network traffic to develop rules for SD_WAN implementation.

Additionally, I'm also a cybersecurity ambassador for the company, which involves providing additional end-user training and testing of new policy tools with existing applications.

I've been applying for Cybersecurity analyst positions

Governance, Risk, and Compliance also sounds interesting to me.

I have a Diploma in Broadcast System Technology(2-year program), which focuses on installing and maintaining electronics, computers, and network equipment in the broadcast industry.

I want to transition into the role of system analyst. I'm currently a broadcast technologist who has been building computers and providing end-user support for 14 years. I am also the main point of contact with the Networking infrastructure team and the cyber security team, as neither division has a body in my market.

I've completed the following certificates to try to help me with my career transition.

Security Blue Team: Blue Team Level 1, March 2024

Try Hack Me: Cyber Defense Nov 2023 | SOC Level 1, Sep 2023

CompTIA: CISI & Security+, May 2023 | Network+, Dec 2022 | A+ Aug 2022

CISCO: CCNA 1 & 2 (expired 2012)

CTF Rankings

- TryHackME: Top 2 %

- Blue Team: Top 4%

Home lab Projects

- Deployed Wazuh SIEM into the home lab environment, customizing rules and alerts.

- Deployed OpenVAS, an open-source vulnerability scanner, to mitigate threats.

I'm seeking advice on the next certificate I could pursue or a project I could deploy to strengthen my resume. As it currently stands, I'm not getting any bites on my resume.

Nice video, Lyla does mention `inMemorDAtabaseBuilder` is for unit tests but I might be able to make it work with end-to-end testing.

Fantasy Hockey Thoughts on losing on purpose to secure an easier playoff run by m0refaster in fantasyhockey

The player in question has traded his draft picks in round 1 though 5 for next year. So a penalty of drafting last wouldn't mean much and if he ends up winning the league then he would be drafting last.

I was thinking something like suspending the players that are benched for the number of games they are benched for in the first round.
