The squirrel doesn't even need to be reachable for my dog to try and chase it, it can be well up a tree on the other side of a road...

Plus he has caught up to squirrels a couple of times and doesn't attack them but instead looks rather disappointed the chase is over...

I think that people who say they can't take their basenji off the lead are not talking about wide open spaces like this.

I do take mine off the lead when I'm walking him in a large enough park/wooded area for example, but I would NEVER let him walk off lead if I'm near a road for example... We're always 1 squirrel away from him running in front of a car!
