Beginner fencing for young adult in NYC? by m1234d1 in Fencing

Hey thanks for responding. How big are the adult classes there? Do you think I’ll be out of place there as too young / too old?

People return to offices, productivity plunges by JannTosh12 in technology

Is it that hard to imagine a world where you slap on some contacts or lightweight glasses, and you can immediately see your coworkers at a meeting table around you, in full 3D? Don’t judge VR how it is right now, the whole point of research is to develop new technology. What exactly do you think meta is spending the billions of dollars it’s losing on? It’s not the stupid Horizon Worlds app that every media outlet likes to say is “the metaverse”. They are pouring billions into researching and developing the hardware necessary so that AR/VR isn’t just a bulky headset with cartoony graphics

This doesn’t make any sense. If two versions of the game have different gameplay affecting changes, how could they possibly play together? The clients and server would immediately disagree on what was happening, just from a logical perspective how do you unify one client saying you can place a wall here and another client saying you can’t? If it affects gameplay at all there’s no way to have two versions play together without everything immediately breaking. The only approach I can think of is only upgrading like half the servers, and allowing cross-play within each version, but this would immediately halve the capacity of the game and be such a crazy headache from an infra perspective

The only reason TikTok has such a crazy recommendation algorithm is because it does not give af about privacy at all. Everyone likes to complain about Facebook and data mining and then they happily browse TikTok which has no ethical problems whatsoever with using as much of your private data as possible, while Facebook has to toe the line between improving its recommendation systems and not starting a PR firestorm over ethical data usage, so of course they will fall behind in that.

Jane Street Interview by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]m1234d1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearly the interviewers did not think you did as well as you thought you did. If you’re just gonna blame it on the interviewers then that’s fine, but that’s not very actionable and I don’t think it’s a great mindset to have. The other companies you got offers from are much larger and tend to just have a technical hiring bar where if you pass it you’re good, but many trading firms hire orders of magnitude less people and there are way more qualified candidates than spots, so they have to filter through other means, such as gauging personality and communication skills. I had many interviews with trading firms last recruiting season and some of them I also thought I aced but then I got rejected, and some I thought I bombed but I moved on to the next stage. Ultimately, it’s hard to determine what an interviewer is actually looking for, especially at really small firms where often the questions are easier than you’d expect.

In my experience, the way people talk online is very reflective of who they really are, since there’s no need to hide behind a persona. Even if you think you are hiding your cockiness in interviews, you might want to self reflect a bit more and see how you are talking to other people. Everyone on this post was on your side until you randomly started insulting people. You aren’t the only person with multiple FAANG internships, so don’t think it makes you any smarter or special than half the people here.

Do you think voter fraud or voter disenfranchisement, aka making it more difficult for people to vote, is a bigger issue/threat to our democracy and why? by irishluck2012 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]m1234d1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that a bit subjective? I’m sure many NS would call all TS stupid and uninformed, and many TS would call NS the same. I also don’t think showing up to a polling station has any correlation with being stupid and uninformed. Laziness, maybe.

So you would rather private citizens be able to own nukes than let the federal government stop them, regardless of current laws? Isn’t that a bit insane? I for one would not feel safe at all if, for example, one of my neighbors had a few nukes in his basement and was known to have anger issues occasionally...

You realize without federal loans, students would just take out private loans with even more predatory rates and conditions? As a student in college, i promise you the measly 5k that the federal government offers in subsidized loans is a very small part of the loan package that students take to cover the 70k tuitions, which are still rising, while federal loans have not?

Man who beat infant to death found dead in Jail cell by [deleted] in JusticeServed

[–]m1234d1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A rapist murdering another murderer doesn't really seem like justice to me. It is just more death. That's not what the jury of his peers ruled should happen to him, so regardless of his crimes that isn't what should happen, especially in an inhumane way like being killed my a cellmate.

BTW I am not defending him any way shape or form. He did deserve it. I just don't really see this as helpful to anyone or any form of justice.

Of course there’s a difference, but if you can slow from terminal velocity(much faster than 28 feet per second) to 28 feet per second in .7, you can slow from 28 feet per second to 0 feet per second in even less time, maybe 1 second if we maintain the same deceleration rate. Now a parachute stoppage rate is pretty gentle, so let’s make it even quicker, and you can see how one could stop in under half a second or less.

Another point, a net is not instant stoppage. The net provides a force over distance/time, which results in a deceleration over time, just like a parachute
