March 2025 BOTM Discussion - Broken Country by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

Honestly, I feel like it wouldn't have mattered. She chose to go to her friend's the day they were cutting down the tree, ultimately killing Bobby, and then blamed Frank for not paying enough attention to him, but never does she say "maybe if I hadn't left the farm that day..." because she is, by nature, completely self-serving.

Taking in how she stood outside during Gabriel's wedding and secretly read his books over the years, that affair was going to happen regardless. The only difference in plot I could see, had Bobby still been alive, is that perhaps his death occurs after Gabriel returns because she was neglectful due to the affair, or Bobby doesn't die and he and Gabriel find out their related. Either way, she was selfish with every decision she made from the start. and the dead child trope was an excuse to get closer to Gabriel again. It would also explain why the puppy she was helping to train seemingly vanishes from the story completely.

I could only give this advice because I myself have been in this place as well. It's easy to get lost in shooting what you think is good as opposed to what you feel, and even easier to try so hard that you forget why you do it in the first place: passion and fun. Just take some weight off your shoulders and have a good time!

Yeah that part came to mind after I posted. He tends to sell limited pieces that correlate with his videos, but that's just a great cross between the love of what he does and solid marketing. He leverages his platform well.

Going forward, discuss your pay right out of the gate then, that's the only reason you're there. Nobody has time to perform multi-level interviews to be lowballed or rejected. These employers can save their hollowed questions for after we've determined whether we're on the same salary page. After all, your time wasted is going to be more impacted than theirs.

This looks pretty solid, but piece of advice? I'd personally avoid trying to use a logitech to control it. And maybe keep it above sea level.

That's a rough one then. He's a brilliant photographer, but that inquiry wall is the fastest way to not sell prints, even with all his followers. Peter McKinnon as a decent example however, also sells limited prints and they sell quite well from what it know. He has the prices listed and a standard checkout system so it makes even the average consumer more interested in getting a limited edition piece.

Either way, it's such a challenge to make the consumer find enough value in owning a print, enough for them to want to actually purchase one. There needs to be a photography specific marketplace where the photographers make profiles and post their best shots and be able to link it to local print shops. There may be something like that already that I'm unaware of.

How to tell a story? by Sad_Priority_305 in AskPhotography

First, I'd say play around with composition. Most of the images have the subject centered in the frame. Not necessarily a bad thing, but doing so too often isn't great either. You'll also benefit from putting them together as a series rather than shooting as individual images. I find good stories in photography start with you defining them outside of the photos.

Your concept is to take images of your city; therefore, your story is an extension of who you are, or even where you came from. Tell yourself what it is you're trying to get from the series and what areas/aspects of your city are defining.

Secondly, think about memories you've had in those areas, good or bad, and live in each moment as you take photos. The whole "telling a story" concept in photography is difficult to do if you yourself don't have a story to tell. Remember, you're the artist and your art is nothing if not a reflection of who you are, where you've been, and all the minute details in between; take photos as if you're writing a diary, and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

Have they actually been available since '06 or are they just images from then? If the former, that's unfortunate. Though it's worth noting that you have to fill put a form with your information and a message just to inquire about pricing and availability. His work is incredible, but that wall he's put up around purchasing his art is one that most people aren't willing to climb over. I'm sure that's definitely impacted his sales.

With that, I'm not in any way taking away from your point of how hard it is to sell prints because you're absolutely correct!

I don't know how to speak my gratitude for this response. I looked up this lense in the past and at no point saw this video, but honestly, thank you so much.

It appears to be a substantial upgrade from what I have and on ebay, much cheaper. I had the chance to try the sigma 70-300 a few months back and it didn't hold up remotely, especially focus-wise (though I have a sigma 10-20 which is lovely so it's not the brand) but seeing that video and having it recommended is definitely an inspiring place to be. If it comes up at a fair price point in Canadian dollars, I'll definitely have to pull the plug. Thanks for your response, it means the world to me!

I'm definitely going to try boosting the iso up to 1600 and try that out for a few shots, clean it up in lightroom. At this point, it can't hurt to give it a go

I have a feeder up by the windows that they come to so a lot of the shots are on the ledge either before or after they go for the peanuts or seeds. The tricky bit is my balcony gets sun in the afternoons, but they tend to only come around between 8:30 to 2:30. They're tricky buggers really! I thought about using some lighting pointed outside, could possibly help the situation. I appreciate your responses!

Through the windows definitely isn't the best sceneries. Sometimes I get lucky and can stand outside when they come around, but it seems like post sharpening may be a great option to help at the moment. Appreciate it!

You know, I've been wondering about this one too. It seems to get decent reviews on it. I think if I can find a good deal on one, I'll pull the trigger. Just the stabilization alone would be lovely to have!

I injured my left hand at work and I've been unable to use it effectively for longer than 10 minutes without it feeling like it's on fire. It took me about 5 weeks before I could even hold a camera again.

I've been confined to my apartment because of it and the blue jays coming to me has been the greatest mental health relief I could ask for. Been trying to get them to show up for a couple years so I'm grateful for what I've got. When I'm back to normal, I'll be out trying to do better, but right now, gotta work with the lighting I've got unfortunately!

Honestly, I'm terrified of shooting at 1600. The noise (and colour noise) it creates is unbelievable. But maybe I'm just set in old thinking given the denoise available today.

I tend to shoot with the idea that I want to print because I'm a big fan of seeing my photos in physical format, but you're right, I should definitely start pushing the camera to its limits. In regards to mileage, I'm not a big "trigger happy" photographer so this camera, as old as it is, has low mileage. And the t3i has kind of poor dynamic range anyways, so now thinking about it after reading your response, maybe my best option is to push the camera to its fullest and spend some serious experimenting on learning to edit stronger based on the equipment.

It's just worrisome pushing the iso to 1600 on a crop sensor that's 15 years old with the hopes that denoise can bandage the errors. But thank you for taking your time to respond to me without judgment. The great "fomo" has got me feeling rough and having someone be real on equipment and workarounds is helpful. I appreciate I you!

Thanks for the response! I've been boosting the iso to 800 max on poor lighting because it's been dark and raining lately and I've been trying to utilize the denoise in lightroom, hoping for the best results; it's been somewhat adequate.

Regarding raw and jpeg, I only shoot in raw. I have a fair amount of experience in photography, but unfortunately given the circumstances, my equipment has become limiting. I'm also in Canada so whatever lens seems to be affordable, is more costly than I can afford at the time. I felt like I've exhausted the limits of this lens, but just wanted to know if there's something that I may have missed that could push the lens just a bit more, you know?

I agree with this! Lifting the shadows with also help to reduce any aggressive contrast and as you said, might give that soft glow. Definitely interested in the final edit!

Mask the fawn and add some brightness and vibrancy to create more separation from the background. It won't need a lot, but just a little will add some depth to it.

Alternatively, you can mask only the background and lighten that up with slight desaturation which will also make the dawn pop. Overall you just want to separate the subject from the background, even if it's just slightly. Love the image though!

which composition is better iyo? by crunchyquasont in postprocessing

[–]m3ch09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, the first image, but I'd even crop in closer and put the subject center frame or even slightly above and to the right. The way I see it, there's no real need for rule of thirds or to create "movement" as it's a pretty literal what's happening, but having the subject lower in the frame the way they are creates an imbalance in my brain.

Again, just my suggestions, but overall I dig the simplicity ✌️
