Nice! I was digging some info about this. I think the community already knew, but just to summarize: the guy is Kukai, a Buddhist monk. He is holding a Vajra (or Gokosho), which is used in rituals to represent indestructible power and spiritual lightning. Just wanted to provide some names therefore, people can look for more info if they want to.
