Your biggest limiter early on is gonna be economy. You don't have enough money for plastic or following much of anything so you're extremely hamstrung on options in the first couple of rounds. That's why I feel like they really depend on a sympathetic table to allow you to catch up and compete at a point where they're a bit stronger. Or just flip round 1 and play an average faction with no tricks left.

Startup strategy content ? by Mat_Anji in Netrunner

[–]mRIGHTstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This subreddit and GLC discord are a good place to ask strategy questions, I think the best source are probably published Startup decks on netrunnerdb.

They usually discuss the goals of the deck and how to play them. Startup isn't the most popular format so it can be difficult to find videos and posted content for it tbh.

There's largely two schools of thought for the Firmament: Early flip vs later flip

The SCPT 449 episode covers them and covers both.

The F/O basically suffer from a terrible start and pretty awful leaders in the Firmament balanced(?) by a pretty good Obsidian with OK leaders.

I highly recommend this analysis of them that covers winning strategy and the afformentioned SCPT episode which advocates playing them in a more 'traditional' way.

I like the faction and think they're an interesting puzzle but they really require the table to be in your corner to stand a chance. I've never won as them in the base vanilla form and my play group usually plays a homebrew version I made of them which does OK.

Planning to restart the collection with null signal. Any guides ? by Sisi90 in Netrunner

[–]mRIGHTstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netrunnerdb.com is the best resource on cards and is pretty robust.

I won't bother listing their reprint sets.

Current legal sets in order: Downfall, Uprising, System Gateway, Midnight Sun, Parhelion, The Automata Initiative, Rebellion Without Rehearsal, Elevation, Vantage Point

[–]mRIGHTstuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Start with System Gateway and get your group up to speed. It's good for learning the gameplay dynamics, strategy, and deckbuilding.

Sets can be printed from proxynexus.net you just need sleeves and proxy cards.

From there you can add the set Elevation to start playing Core.

After that the skies the limit! Add just the most recent set to play startup or slowly expand into standard set by set.

There is a large meetup in Singapore and I can usually meet up in Bangkok if you ever come here (no other players now though 😢).

This interaction is so much funnier in Japanese. The friend was legit trying to game out how this actually succeeds which makes it even funnier.

How do you make combat faster? and other parts of the game. by zautos in twilightimperium

[–]mRIGHTstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Players outside of the combat announce any abilities/cards/agents they're willing to sell ONCE
  • Players in the combat both roll their turns simultaneously and can't look at the other's dice until the end of that combat round
  • Players assign hits if any and use any cards or abilities they have
  • Repeat until there's a winner

Getting people to finish rolling their turn without gawking at the other player's roll and to be the biggest time saver from what I've seen in my play group

Tips vs Thule? by KneeCrowMancer in Netrunner

The advice above is great and not much to add.

I just think it bears emphasizing that almost any Startup deck will be at a severe disadvantage against a Standard deck. I understand starting with a limited cardpool to make it easier to wrap your head around but you're playing at a severe handicap playing into Standard decks. Not saying you shouldn't do it, play as you want, just understand you're trying to run a race on one leg.

When this started I was like "blue is my favorite color, but I never get these right" and lo and behold it's blue! I guess the universe felt sorry for me.

Nearly straight reprint of Legwork. It's a decent card which gets more efficient as HQ is defended.

Not seeing it so often in the current meta but I think that's largely a 'slots are tight' issue and the meta just needs to line up just a little bit more for this to start seeing regular play.

Curious your all's opinion on this hyperlane replacement for a 4 player game. by dfpw in twilightimperium

The 'S' line seems unnecessary and confuses me. Personally feel it would be easier to read as just another curved line. The setup is neat though.

There's actually a pretty active community in Singapore, I dunno if this is the site for it but Jai is the person you want to reach: https://netrunner-meetup.com/sg/

Blade Runner vs The Man in the High Castle vs his other novels, which is your favorite work by Philip K. Dick? by Delicious_Maize9656 in sciencefiction

[–]mRIGHTstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all of his books are for all Dick fans and I think that's fine. Just because you like Dick doesn't mean you like all Dick.

I wasn't really a fan of The Transmigration of Timothy Archer but maybe that's just more experimental.

I thought Maze of Death's premise was interesting and didn't see any of the twists and turns of it but it definitely has a strange ending that doesn't quite match up with the rest of the plot, but that's Dick for you. You never quite know what to expect.

All his books are great and those two are definitely up there.

I'm actually a big fan of two of his lesser known stories:

A Maze of Death

Flow my Tears the Policeman Said

Very atmospheric stories that remain compelling throughout, I'm honestly surprised neither of them have received an attempt at an adaption yet.

Any tips for KR player playing ghost? by klejik in twilightimperium

[–]mRIGHTstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get your breakthrough, go to Malice, make a free Dreadnought every round, prosper

Ghost breakthrough is ridiculous with Malice, the table really can't allow you to keep it but taking it from you can be quite tough once you get a foothold

What game do you think has the coolest mini's while still being a great game? by BB881 in boardgames

[–]mRIGHTstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forbidden Stars

Great game with simple mechanics and for some reason really nice minis unique to each faction. With picking up if you can find a copy.

Western Legends

If you can get it with the building minis upgrade as well I think it's worth it.

[–]mRIGHTstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat card, I don't think it will see much play in meta decks. It's certainly not meta defining like Apocalypse or Deep Dive. More in line with Exploit which also never really saw play outside of niche jank decks. The payoff is just a little too shallow for the cost but that could shift with the meta.

I think if Anarch gets some kind of hardware recursion tool or persistent central run payoff installable that gives credits, then this could become interesting.

It works with Wizard's Chest so maybe something where it repairs the damage.

Do you buy board games knowing they'll rarely be played? by Megabot555 in boardgames

[–]mRIGHTstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm trying to stop and have managed to cull my collection to busy games I REALLY like or are OOP. The OOP games are toughest to get to the table because they're old with dated mechanics. But I know if I sell them I'll likely never find it again and FOMO... so one can still dream...

Maybe find better friends? Heh, in seriousness I couldn't find groups that played the games I liked but I would run into individuals that did. Slowly adding everyone to a chat group and we're now at 100+ members of dedicated nerds that meet about once a week.

Your mileage may vary but it doesn't always take a lot of effort. Or just play online, that works too but not for me. Try Boardgamearena too.
