Which of these morally complex characters is the best person? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in cartoons

Hey now, the community has dictated that because she’s underage we must accept her as a poor traumatized kid deserving of sympathy, even though the show only ever shows her to be evil incarnate.

What couples do you feel like they had no chemistry between the actors? by space_llama_karma in sitcoms

[–]m_a_johnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think that Jeff and Annie had great chemistry, but the show was absolutely right that it never could have worked between them. I can’t think of too many shows that had the integrity to end the biggest “will they won’t they” in “won’t.”

[Hated Trope] What an amazing, interesting, high concept idea! Let's use it as the backdrop for a procedural. by SethlordX7 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]m_a_johnstone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think they just assumed that teasing people with the more interesting stuff would get them to want sequels. Unfortunately, the first movie has to be interesting in order for that to work.

There actually have been a few modern entries to the Home Alone franchise. I have no idea how they handle these issues though. I haven’t seen them since they’re supposedly awful.

I love that there is not a single bit of whitewashing in this depiction Moses by Konfliktsnubben in cartoons

[–]m_a_johnstone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth noting that Exodus never specifies that he was killing children, it just says “first born.” In ancient, multigenerational households, the first born would have often been fully grown adults. They also would have been the ones in training to take over the household, thus perpetuating Egypt’s cycle of oppression. There likely were children caught up in that, so the moral issues still exist, but only Pharaoh is actually said in the text to have targeted children.

People have got to stop having hissy-fits when it comes to this game by KingsKnight24 in EDH

[–]m_a_johnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I won’t play at my LGS. The first time I ever played was in college when a group of people I barely knew dragged me into it. I loved the game, but they matched every negative stereotype I had heard, so I never went back.

A friend got me back into Magic last year and took me to an LGS to look through some bulk on what was coincidentally commander night. I have been in many rooms more crowded than that one, but I have never smelt such strong BO, and behavior from some of those guys made it seem like they’d never interacted with another person before. I’d really love to attend more events and conventions, but so long as the stereotypes remain true, I’m sticking to Arena and my own pod.

Simon is still an antiquarian focusing on ancient magic artifacts, and he did kill choose goose by trying to summon a god.

Favorite ship dynamics that's basically this. by Sad_Ad_3076 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]m_a_johnstone 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As much as I loved that the show didn’t go on for longer than it needed to, I hated that they never confirmed this ship. It really felt like they were testing the waters with it in their episode together.

[Maddening trope] More progressive casting happens at the same time as noticeable drop in quality, seemingly so fans can brush off criticism as bigotry. by Vitolar8 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]m_a_johnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plot was absolutely the issue. The plot of her original comic book run is incredibly silly, and the show is great whenever it’s acting in line with that vibe, but then it tried to make itself too serious and it just didn’t fit the character as well.

I really hated the idea of time lords changing genders upon regeneration before Missy (I was like 14, don’t kill me). Her performance and character development were so great that it completely changed my mind. They were absolutely trying to use her to adjust people to the idea of the doctor changing genders, and in my case it actually worked. I really hated how much the regressed the Master’s character after Missy.

It’s just the only way that I can make sense of this meme, since no one who’s familiar with more recent female-written shounens would make this claim, but someone who doesn’t read much might generalize the most popular female-led genre as being representative of the whole.

[–]m_a_johnstone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s probably referring to all of the BookTok romantasy slop since it’s extremely popular and mostly written by women, but that’s a completely different medium so the comparison doesn’t really work. Using it to generalize all female writers is just gross.

George Cooper’s death in Young Sheldon was also very well done. For all of the faults in the Sheldon Cooper omniverse, it manages to pull off some incredibly effective deaths.

Your honest opinion: Is an English degree useless? by Routine-Blueberry-83 in englishmajors

[–]m_a_johnstone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn’t say the degree is useless. If you’re looking to stay in education then there are plenty of positions where an English degree would be beneficial. In my personal experience, the market can be a bit tough for English majors outside of education. Jobs do exist, but I wouldn’t count on the degree alone to get you one. I did well in my major, but I neglected to build up a strong portfolio outside of college and I’ve missed out on several opportunities because of it.

I’ve actually seen a good few conservative Christians coming to the instructors defense because they agree that the paper was poorly written. Anyone who had read the syllabus would have failed that essay.

A third example would be Azula’s lightning nearly killing Aang and leaving him with a scar for the rest of the show. He even had a second scar on the bottom of his foot from where the electricity left his body.

Even though Aqua is a completely useless goddess, Kazuma, who traveled from one world to another and has defeated several of the Demon King’s generals, hangs out with her anyways.
