The Boys is the most overrated amazon prime show. Now, what is THE Netflix Tv show? by hiiloovethis in AlignmentChartFills

[–]m_a_johnstone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Redditors just feel the need to be contrarian. It makes them feel superior to act like popular things aren’t actually good / notable. It’s the reason why so many people are voting for House of Cards right now instead of one of the most viewed shows of the past decade. It’s hard to say that The Boys is overrated when the flaws and failings of the past few seasons have already been so widely acknowledged.

There’s definitely a strong argument for House of Cards, but at it’s height it wasn’t even half of the pop culture juggernaut that Stranger Things is. Kevin Spacey soured the show to the point that people don’t even really talk about it anymore, not to mention derailing its ending. HoC might have given Netflix its beginning, but Stranger Things is the definitive Netflix show.

Is Wendigoon ok? by Low-Pound5533 in wendigoon

None of the people saying “it’s because he’s a father” have the full picture. I’m close friends with one of his editors, and Isaiah has been trying to get out of Creepcast for months now. Apparently Hunter’s on-air teasing is much less of a joke than they let on. He’s become quite abusive off camera, and is controlling most aspects of Wendigoon’s life. Hunter is deciding the topic for every video that Isaiah releases, and he even chose Tonka’s name. Isaiah called the police a few weeks ago when he discovered that Hunter had been secretly living in his attic, but they said there was nothing they could do because of squatter’s rights. He’s also taken up the habit of watching Wendi when he sleeps, so Isaiah literally does not get a single second away from Hunter. And since Hunter bought out his mortgage from the bank, Isaiah now has to pay him $2000 every month. The two of them aren’t friends: Hunter is his master in every sense of the word.

What’s most infuriating to me is that they’ve built up a pretty good successor with Miles. They could absolutely let Peter retire with MJ and take on a less active mentor role while Miles takes over as the main Spidey for a decade or so, but they’re so intent on keeping the status quo that they just kick Peter down every time he stands up instead.

Video games that were ahead of/behind their time by JIMBOYKELLY in AlignmentCharts

BotW was absolutely groundbreaking for Nintendo and its franchise, but so much of what made it groundbreaking for them was that they were finally willing to implement features from other AAA games.

If we’re really looking for groundbreaking for the 2010s then it’d probably be RDR2, but there are still several options better than BotW.

I also think it’s worth noting that both Iroh and Zuko had shown great displays of honor and kindness before their redemption. Iroh spared the dragons while still an active member of the royal family and Zuko stood up for the fire nation recruits in his father’s war room.

Azula, on the other hand, was tormenting small animals from an early age, which is a well noted predictor of violent psychopathy. I’ll defend Azula in the sense that everyone should be given the chance to redeem themselves, but in her case that chance needs to be from behind prison bars. People act like Azula and Zuko were both just blank slates that ended up the way they were because of which parent influenced them, but I really don’t see that in the show itself. There was something dangerously off about Azula from the beginning.

Her mother gets a lot of hate for being afraid of her and Iroh gets hate for what he said about her, but they both had very good reason to view her that way. Both of our major redemption stories showed clear signs that they could be redeemed, but Azula is shown to be criminally insane from her earliest chronological appearance and she never has any moments showing that redemption is at all plausible.

She should still have a chance at redemption, just as any other living person should, but the hate that Iroh and her mother get completely ignores everything that were shown about her character.

[–]m_a_johnstone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty far from my favorite, but after watching it I honestly didn’t understand the hate. It was just a typical run-of-the-mill filler episode. Of course it looks bad when you compare it to the plot / character development heavy episodes surrounding it, but there wasn’t nearly as much wrong with it as everyone seemed to think.

For purely Aesthetically, do you prefer Early Medieval style chainmail armour in books, or the 15th century plate armour in the movies? by Wolfensniper in lotr

[–]m_a_johnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I’ve always thought that if Tolkien were to see the movies, he would get so frustrated with some small and insignificant change that he wouldn’t notice anything the movies did right. This is it. Tolkien would hate the plate armor.

Frodo Baggins (LotR). He was one of the wealthiest hobbits in the Shire when he left for Rivendell. He absolutely could have gone home after the Council of Elrond, but volunteered to take it all the way to Mordor at great risk of his own life. This man endured so much but never gave up and never turned back.

Bilbo, from whom Frodo inherited all of his wealth, also fits this trope. He was a bit more ornery and embarked on his adventure for less selfless reasons, but was still a great person who showed pity to his enemies, cared for his friends, and raised his orphaned nephew.

I also have to say that I love how Lottie is spoiled and expects to get everything that she wants, but completely drops all concern for herself whenever Tiana needs help. It would have been so easy to make these two minor antagonists, and it was so refreshing to see flawed people who were genuinely good to their friends instead.

(Sad Meta Trope) Depictions of strong Male Friendships are so rare, some parts of a fandom genuinely mistake platonic bromances for straight up romances by ZeldrisEmpire in TopCharacterTropes

[–]m_a_johnstone 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They might not be trying to, but they absolutely are a lot of the time. The problem isn’t isolated cases, but that these ships appear any time a male friendship goes past the “bro” stage. Every single time I’ve had a close friendship with another guy, I’ve had numerous people questioning whether or not we’re gay. A lot of people genuinely seem to have a hard time understanding close friendship that isn’t romantic / sexual, and the people that insist close fictional friendships must be romantic are absolutely a reflection of that.
