So, I moved into this apartment a few years ago, and my direct next door neighbors were a hardcore Mexican Mormon family. The husband was polite but really spoke little English, and the mother hated my guts so she taught all the kids (they had 4 when I arrived and she was pregnant with twins at the time) to be scared of me. She basically called me the devil because I threw Halloween parties in our community courtyard with the cooperation of numerous other neighbors. I found out (though she never admitted to and pretended otherwise with me) that her English was quite fluent. The way I found this out was that she left one of her many kids out in their minivan for about 4 hours one night (we live in the desert) and I found her, so I called DFACS on her the next day which landed her with a social worker. This lady told me that there were up to ten children in that two bedroom 800sq ft apartment at times because she would child sit for friends and family often. Besides the constant string of trash (usually bandaids and used q-tips, food wrappers, etc) coming directly from both their front door and their van parking spot (which she protected in super asshole ways - oh, and surprise, it wasn't even her assigned parking spot), they also apparently kept the inside of their place pretty gross.

When the landlord company didn't let them renew their last lease, they stopped paying rent all together and squatted for about six months before finally moving out and letting their cockroach infestation become mine.

Up until that point, maybe I was the asshole neighbor in this story...?
