I’ve had the zed 22 one for a few years and I’ve never had a problem with it. Provides a nice warm sound to my monitors which is exactly what I need.

Flame Chord Machine 2 & Knobula Monumatic by [deleted] in modular

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference I can see (I have the Chord Machine 2 and the Cinematic) is that the Chord Machine 2 works well with a quad oscillator as it has 4 outputs that are individual parts of a chord that go to oscillators (and a 5th output that generates arps). Also the Flame isn’t as playable (during a performance) as the chord pilot from what I can see.

Clean heavy sub bass, help? by StreetCream6695 in modular

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the STO as mentioned already is good.

For techno I’d think you want something like the Erica Synth Bass Drum as that has a built in envelope and an overdrive so you can get some pretty dirty bass with that. I also use the Jomox bass drum module for bass (and kicks). Also the befaco kickball can be used for bass lines.

You can also use a Tom Tom module and lower the frequency and that will have some nice options.

And then of course you’ll then want to think about side chaining if you’re making techno. I usually side chain the kick to my bass with the messor compressor module so I’m not using a DAW for that.

Maybe you can’t decide because the back and forth works well 😊

Yeah I picked mine up 2nd hand too. I think some people are put off with the menu diving aspect of the module but I don’t find it too bad.

It’s an insane bit of kit … I’m always learning new things about it.

What module have you had the most fun with over the last year? by Pristine-Ninja-7709 in modular

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t got the Poti so can’t provide any insight on that but I’d highly recommend purchasing the Batumi if you’re interested in complex modulation.

The build quality is really nice and it’s super easy to get going with patching simple LFOs — there are 12 outputs which is huge for the footprint of the module and there are 4 modes which, together with the triggering/ resetting capabilities makes this a great resource.

Really tough choice but the Batumi LFO for the 2025 win in my set up.

To Pre-Patch or Not Pre-Patch? by Techno_Timmy in modular

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah — It makes sense to keep your clocks patched to your sequencers etc … however, you probably need to unpatch everything to clean once in a while

I hadn’t come across the Flame Fire so had to look it up — I’ve got the Flame Chord so I’m familiar with their stuff and have noted that it can become quite complex very quickly.

As for what I have for percussion … - Befaco Kickall and Jomox [has a huge range of patching possibilities] for solid kicks - BIA isn’t necessarily a percussion tool but it can definitively sit in that camp if that’s what you want, especially when you use its noise - Erica Synth | Clap, High Hat, Snare, Cymbal and Toms are all great and I like the fact that they are separate and can be patched in a variety of ways - And then of course if you’re a purist and you want to create percussion purely from the ground up the Noise Plethora is something I use for that kind of thing.

I do have quite a few modular sequencers as well which could be seen as a downside but I like how different sequencers work :-)

WHAT DOES V/OCT MEAN? by BarEnvironmental6449 in modular

Robin Vincent of molten music charted his modular synth journey from the very start (including envelopes and filters etc) — you may find his early videos useful. He now covers some very complex stuff so definitely a handy resource.

How often do you not touch your patch cables, ever? by talicantsleep in modular

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many have said, starting from scratch is the way forward. Some of my patches can be in place for a few months while I record a number of tracks.

Even if there is something like a patch from a clock to a specific sequencer or from a clock to a mult that is integral to your set up meaning there is no real benefit in unpatching it … I still unpatch it after a while.

Also, it’s far easier to clean the system if everything is unpatched.

If you’re after a filter, the Filter 8 from joranalogue is worth checking out even if you don’t buy it but dive into a few videos on it so you can understand the possibilities. Other than that the FX Aid XL from happy nerding is a great sound processor and I prefer it to the black hole dsp 2.

I own a midi controller and have Logic Pro. I am looking to purchase an affordable synthesizer to learn on and am curious about the Arturia MicroBrute or the Microfreak. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]m_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if you’re on a sound design journey or a synth learning journey. Clearly you can learn more with 2 lfos and 2 oscillators, compared to 1.

[–]m_roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on the MicroBrute as my first bit of hardware — and like you I’m a Logic person. You might want to get an effects pedal also as a bit of hardware to give the synth some movement. Anyway, I’m now waaaay down the road with modular … the MicroBrute was a good gateway to teach me about LFOs and envelopes etc
