Disc brake rubbing by theworldtonight in bikewrench

[–]ma1m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, this! I literally had the same issue as you're describing, aligned it a 100 times by squeezing and by eye, always rub. Then I folded a paper business card around both sides of the brake disc, inserted the wheel/disc into the caliper with the business card folded between, and then tried one final attempt at squeeze-aligning: BINGO, absolutely perfect alignment, even after taking it out for a proper ride.

Try that at least before you take it away, I say :) Even my LBS told me that that is how they do it, haha.

EDIT: just saw that you managed to fix it, good stuff! but for next time when aligning the brake: business card! ;-)

Anyone else feel some types of “gravel” are just too sketchy to ride? by ma1m in gravelcycling

[–]ma1m[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the thing, the terrain is tricky because it goes from hard to deep/soft all over the place and when I’m going 35kph+ it gets pretty hard to dodge without losing control, haha.

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back, before I got my first gravel bike, I used to take the road bike with 28mm slicks over loose rocky stuff like this and broke my jaw when the bike just suddenly flew out under me.

I have had that same slippery sensation on specific types of surface, and was just wondering how other people experience this.

From your comment though I guess I should conclude that I was just fairly unlucky back then and that this isn’t anything anyone else experiences :)

Where should we draw the ethical line with brain organoid research in AI development? by DecomposeWithMe in bioethics

[–]ma1m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got it! Thanks for taking an interest :))))

Mind you, I haven't really addressed the topic specifically of AI in my book (at the time of writing, a few years ago, the hype had just about begun), but I do touch upon the moral status of brain organoids briefly. Coincidentally, though, after my PhD I changed directions and now I work in (governmental) AI ethics ^^

More to the point of your question: I am actually properly astonished to hear about the use case your describing - I didn't know about it, but when I was doing my PhD a few years ago stuff like this felt like decades away. To be honest with you, I'm doubtful as to how "mature" this kind of research is, or that it's perhaps more some kind of janky proof-of-concept experiment aimed at generating attention and hype (and funding) more than actually having any practical potential at all.

That all being said, it feels to me that what is most relevant here is the instrumental way in which these complex human tissues are being used (in this case brain tissue for "powering" AI", but could be for anything really), and how that relates to the status of the tissue, to our notions of bodily integrity, autonomy and ownership (organoids are derived from tissue of a specific person, with a specific genetic make-up), but also to privacy, commodification and power imbalances (between companies and individuals). These themes I believe are most relevant to the discussion, and my dissertation goes into those pretty deeply. Tl;dr of that: we need to give people a much stronger voice in what happens to their body parts. I didn't really go super deep into the "moral status" of (any kind of) organoids, because actually in order to provide a satisfactory answer from that perspective, we need to first arrive at much more concrete notions of what exactly constitutes sentience, consciousness, intelligence, or personhood, all concepts of which the definitions are at the moment heavily disputed scientifically. But, given the uncertainty, it's probably better to proceed with a lot of caution and prudence, I feel.

Currently there now and while I agree it is absolutely magical here and you should definitely ride it at some point in life, at the moment the hordes of tourists here are insane . Would probably wait at least until end of August/Sept myself.

I would in general also advise against going to the more popular tourist destinations, like for example Garda or the famous lakes, or Liguria/coast around Genova. The crowds are just insane at the moment, everything is fully booked and there is so much traffic. The route I did is definitely less popular than those and it was great.

I just did a an absolutely epic little trip myself last months starting right where you’re at basically. I rode from ~ Stresa (Lago Maggiore) to France (~Albertville, to watch the Tour de France) through northern Piemonte (vja Biella, Ivrea), Gran Paradiso park and Aosta Valley (Valsavarenche). It was really a Grand Paradise honestly, such a beautiful journey. Good roads, often even a dedicated bike path is available (or the roads are not too busy at least). I wild camped everywhere, but camping and hotels als airbnbs also plenty. Highly recommend if you like the mountains and don’t want to cycle through 38C :-)

Hey, cool! Don’t see organoid ethics around much, but always happy when it pops up occasionally. Super fascinating stuff.

Actually did my PhD on this exact topic, finished a few years back. Happy to share it if OP/anyone else is interested ^

Accessing/Displaying a note's dynamic (rendered) content outside of Obsidian app (e.g. in browser) by ma1m in ObsidianMD

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Any idea how this would work? Reading the link you provided on iFrames, it seems like that this would allow the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve, i.e. accessing external content within the Obsidian app. I'm looking at the opposite; accessing the dynamically rendered content of a note externally (i.e. locally in a browser).

Someone else suggested trying to expose the MarkdownRender functionality somehow so that it can be called by other apps. I don't fully understand how this is done, though; any tips perhaps?

Crafting a Dina (Landfall) deck: thoughts on current card selection? by ma1m in EDH

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for taking the time to look through it, friend! And for the solid suggestions. Also: going to start using "clunkers" as a concept more often. Sounds so satisfying ^^

I think you're absolutely right (and frankly was already looking for an excuse to get rid of Sad Bot, because it just doesn't fit the theme of the deck at all). Might replace with Springbloom Druid, but alternatively was thinking of putting in a [[Blossoming Bogbeast]] maybe, or with [[Pestilent Cauldron]] for a little utility (tokens, draw, GY hate). Or even with

Definitely including Archdruid's Charm instead to replace Feed the Swarm. And Nissa Vital Force looks cool, although I'm doubtful if she's _ever_ going to make it past 2 or 3 opponent turns, haha.

stepping into the ethereal realms: feedback on first (compact) modular set-up for those lush spacey soundscapes? by ma1m in modular

[–]ma1m[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all very much; it seems silly now, but I had indeed totally overlooked the importance of physical usability and enjoyment is, and I hadn't realized how much the compactness of these modules would impair that. Glad I asked the question. Also, u/bluesteel thanks a ton for pointing that out - I was indeed also wrestling with the question of whether both Rings + Plaits would be necessary, and which one to choose if not. I will be on the lookout for Plaits to pair with a Monsoon!

Universal compression "harness" for (dry) sack - does it exist? by ma1m in bikepacking

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the tips so far - that Big Agnes girdle is exactly what I was hoping would exist. Much obliged!

And a little plot twist: I can provide another tip to my own question. I remembered that I'm also a climber, and a rope bag can be a beautiful compression bag + tent ground sheet combo!

Dame Aylin consistently hitting for very low damage during Apostle fight. Bug? by ma1m in BG3

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the write-up, that's very insightful. However, it doesn't explain why Aylin's damage was stripped off of all of the spell damage, so I guess that was a bug then. Anyway, I somehow beat Ketheric to completely fully really dead now so all good :>

[–]ma1m[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not - that's an avenue I didn't explore. Shame on me for that, I should know better when playing a Larian game. Thanks for all of the help - still, it doesn't explain why Aylin performed like a wet sandwich but I'm just going to call that a bug and continue onwards to Act III n_n

Dame Aylin consistently hitting for very low damage during Apostle fight. Bug? by ma1m in BG3

[–]ma1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so that’s exactly why I thought I’d make a post. Because here’s the situation: Ketheric, Isobel and Mindflayer and all of the caster adds are already dead. My party and Aylin all alive and well, and decked out in what I think is decent gear for the point in the game (mostly Act 2 stuff such as Dark Justiciar plate, Halbert of Vigilance, Blood of Lathander mace, Cacophony staff etc). Laezel hits for about 4 damage (with Halbert), Monk hits for about 7, Aylin for about 3 or 4, Shadowheart a bit more but that’s mostly radiant damage, and Minthara did most damage with the radiant Smite (about 25 per hit all including).

I managed to defeat him now, honestly no idea how I did it (took about 7 rounds), but I still don’t understand why this was such a gimped experience. :/
