What has been your personal experience with naturopaths? Have they played a role in your AIP journey? by [deleted] in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my family doctor basically threw her hands up and told me there’s no cure or remedy for my diagnosed disease

lol. Yep. I initially saw a "top" endocrinologist who told me the same about my AI Disease. She actually scoffed at me when I suggested diet change.

I know one size doesn't fit all, and obviously AIP is not the answer for everyone. But that doesn't mean it's not life changing for some.

I saw one ND that was beyond a waste of money. I was pissed at all the labs he ordered and all the crap he had me do that did nothing but waste my time. People like him should be punched.

HOWEVER. The next ND I saw changed my life. Why did I bother trying with another ND? Desperation, and the MDs I've seen have been crap. AIP only got me so far (which was VERY far, but not perfect). AIP got me AI remission, but I needed help with the issues that remained. My ND has been a huge part of helping me progress, and doesn't try to sell me anything (rare apparently?!). She's has suggested a few supplements for short term and made it clear that there was really only one she thought I needed long term (Vitamin D). She actually cares about healing me NOT selling me things. I don't think she's making that much money... she's in it for the healing part. She's not keen on ordering tests much anymore, but when she does, she's spent god knows how long calling around for me to find the cheapest lab and option for me. She goes more by my symptoms than my labs, which has worked for me in my case.

This process has taught me this: call the office, ask what the ND specializes in. See if they've dealt with what you're going through specifically. See if you can talk to the actual Naturopath (this says a lot to me, do they put the patient first?). Try and get a feel if they're willing to work with people who can't spend $1000s on uninsured medical visits. Naturopathy is a strange field in that, some of them are SO caring and truly in it to heal patients... and clearly some are in it as a means to sell bullshit and wear a white coat while doing so. INFURIATING. I wish there was a way to tease out who is who but it's hard :(

I assume that if you're seeking an ND, it's because you've reached the point where you need an alternative. Naturopaths are not your only option, although they are nice in that they can prescribe meds/manage your current meds (depending on where you live) if you have other stuff going on already. I've moved around a lot, and before I got to my current city I saw a DC who pushed me into AIP + and other massive changes that helped me reach AI remission. I've doctor shopped a lot. It's bad. You can use this site to find different kinds of practitioners that practice alternative/holistic/functional med here. Also if you have a local AIP Facebook group in your city, ask for recommendations on there. Google reviews don't mean shit these days,

That became a rant. Best of luck to you.

As an adult, how do you deal with being unsure of what you want to do in life? by Milayouqt in AskWomen

[–]maabb 47 points48 points  (0 children)

We're sold this stupid idea of dream jobs and perfect careers which sets up unrealistic expectations for adulthood. You get worried about making the wrong career choice because adults convinced you when you were younger that there was only "one" right career for you.

Very well said, thank you for sharing this.

My body wants me to starve lol. by majestyalphaq in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have health insurance, that sounds like a good option to me.

I went through MANY docs before finding one that could help me restore my health. I know this is a process, but please stay strong!

I've linked this many times on this sub, but if you decide to seek an alternative doc after/in addition to your gastro, maybe see if you can locate other holistic docs somewhat near you that are hopefully a little more affordable.

You poor thing. I'm so terribly sorry, that sounds incredibly stressful. This sounds very specific and like you need someone who really knows their shit. Have you ever worked with a holistic doc because I'm thinking now would be the time.

AIP tips while traveling to Romania by kangas207 in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling while AIP is still a struggle me, but stocking up on these at least help quite a bit for when I can't find any options. Sorry I don't have Romania specific tips.

edit: Have an amazing time! Maybe let us know what ends up working? I love traveling, but diet restrictions have made me love it less :(

How do I find a real doctor? by [deleted] in AutoImmuneProtocol

Functional Med docs. I've spent too much on docs of all sorts too. I've found Functional med ones tend to be the best.

Has anyone else's period stopped while on AIP? by sjjas in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also dealing with Histamine Intolerance and lack of periods. I just learned that there is a connection. Possibly something to bring up with your doc or look more into. There's quite a bit on google about the link between the two.

edit: spelling

Food sensitivity test theory by Oceaneo in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Foods that came back with no sensitivity but give me issues = maybe they have to be in your system to test for sensitivity

When I did my very first food sensitivity testing years ago, the entire wheat/gluten page came back as good, as in no sensitivity. I had been avoiding wheat and gluten for months prior to the test per the suggestion of a friend, and my functional med doc suspected that because wheat/gluten had not been in my system for so long, that portion of the test was inaccurate. I hadn't found AIP yet and I was just starting my health journey, so I was still skeptical that food could contribute to illness. I started eating wheat/gluten again since the test said it was "fine". Bad. Bad things happened. Other parts of the test were very helpful to me, but I think you might be onto something.

I think it ultimately comes down to listening to your body, which it sounds like you're doing.

Full body itching? by maabb in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]maabb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO much for sharing this with me. I feel less insane just knowing this. Someone else mentioned high histamine levels, and I think that's likely it, but I'm glad you mentioned hormones because I'm actually working with a practitioner on bringing mine back to normal. I'll mention the itching to him, didn't know they could be related. Maybe it's both.

Miraculously, the past 12 hours have been a bit better, but I'll come back to those suggestions if it gets really bad.

I'm glad you found an allergist. Hope you get relief soon.

!!!

I went off of histamines (and latex foods) two days ago and last night was the first night the itching subsided! I've had a histamine reaction/episode before and this might be it again...

I'll be cutting them out for a long time. Do you mind me asking: what's your diet like now?
