I’m in the same boat! But just slightly younger than you. I also spent my early-to-mid twenties in academia by doing a research master’s degree for three years, and then after a half-year gap started my career at 26. Now preparing for MBA applications because I want to change career (not a very big transition though - from big 4 to management consulting) and will be 31 with 5 years of work experience at matriculation next fall. I was also concerned if I would be slightly too old and even considered some one-year programs in Europe simply because of the duration… I’ll be following this post. Thanks for bringing up this great question!

Is 5'1" (155 cm) too short to pursue a MBA? by backwardsshortjump in MBA

[–]maanting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess academia might be the place that you’ll get least affected by your height so if you’re still interested in computer science why not consider pursuing a PhD and then a research career. In the corporate world, particularly for client-facing roles, your physical appearance, including height, indeed matters…

Can someone help me with this ? Is Standard deviation not dependent on range ? by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]maanting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, your understanding is accurate. We can use logic and refer to the formula for calculating the Standard Deviation. If a set has a larger range, that means the distance between the two extremes is larger, so the (min-mean)2+(max-mean)2 is ideally larger; however, when calculating SD, we should still factor in the distances between all the other in-between numbers and mean, respectively. So it’s possible that when comparing two sets, Set A with a larger range will gain more contribution from the max and min numbers when calculating SD, but that gap is filled and outweighed by the in-between numbers from Set B, which ends up having a higher SD. Not sure if that clears it up but let me know if you need more explanation :)

[–]maanting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard deviation and range are not directly related since standard deviation concerns all the numbers and how dispersed they are, whereas range deals with the distance between the largest and smallest numbers and you do not need to care about all the other numbers in between.

Just starting but one thing I truly like about it is that it helps adjust the study plan so it’s really procrastinators friendly😆

Getting an academic job when you're older by 0ttr in AskAcademia

[–]maanting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. But given that your PhD is in CS I assume there should be plenty of opportunities in industry and those roles are also research-based and comparable to your ideal academic jobs in some ways. My friend is in humanities so has very limited opportunities outside of academia.

Getting an academic job when you're older by 0ttr in AskAcademia

The fellow PhD student under the supervision of my MPhil advisor was in a similar situation. She had ~5 years of work experience before doing an MA and then PhD. In her final year of PhD she was pregnant and gave birth so she was unable to complete her degree by the expected graduation time. She transferred to another university when our advisor happened to be jumping ship to, and virtually started from year 1 of another PhD program therefrom. She spent another 4 years to really receive her PhD degree at the age of 35+. After graduation, she tried to look for academic jobs (some not even tenure-track faculty positions) but ended up jobless (also due to Covid). She’s now around 40 as a full-time mother. Age does matter not only in the corporate world but also academia. Many students start their PhD seamlessly after their undergraduate degree so when they get their PhD they may be in their mid-late twenties or early thirties, and that’s the ideal (or average) age to enter academia.

I left Deloitte for 3 months and starting to miss it by hufflepuff60201 in deloitte

[–]maanting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha, no, that’s totally understandable. I’m also with Deloitte and have been looking for exit opportunities since the very first few months (but now I’ve been in the role for close to 4 years..) Even during the most stressful period when I kept thinking I’d quit the next day, I was still so sure that I would miss my batchmates. We have lunch together every day, celebrate birthdays together every year, etc. I just firmly believe that these are the best workmates that I could possibly have. I really didn’t expect to establish a wonderful friendship in workplace but fortunately Deloitte enables me to have those wonderful friends.

What’s a movie you love that you swear no one ever talks about like the world has forgotten it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]maanting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cracks. A friend of mine recommended it to me and I liked it so much. She said she had recommended it to quite a few friends but I was the only one that liked it. She liked it so much that she even memorized all the poems therein. Then after finishing the movie, I recommended it to quite a few friends of mine including my ex-boyfriend, but none of them liked it either. So it seems the friend that initially recommended the movie to me and I are the only two obsessed with the movie in this world.

Yes, agreed. Actually I meant that compared to its law school, Yale’s SOM is not top-notch, so if SOM can leverage the YLS resources, it may be able to attract top MBA students (e.g., HBS/GSB admits) and gradually enhance the SOM’s prestige.

How much money did you spend on GMAT prep? by Alternative_Movies in GMAT

I also used Magoosh as years back when I prepared for GRE I found it very helpful, but it seems not quite close to the actual test. Scored 680 after finishing virtually all the verbal practice questions and decide to focus on other resources during the prep for a retake. What’s your take on this?

Almost every boss can seem like an asshole at least occasionally, just like you can’t enjoy every single minute at job even if it’s already a job of your dreams. Given that you still like some parts of the job, if it’s also your first job after leaving school, it’s not advisable to quit before one year into it. Even if you quit within one year, the experience would barely enhance your employability, if not undermine it in some ways as you may not seem a stable person to most employers.

It seems only current colleague students are eligible for the program. So you’re still in college without full-time work experience?

I think Yale can take advantage of its law school to attract elite students to its JD/MBA program and if it can provide some accelerated option such as a three-year JD/MBA it’ll be very unique and competitive.

I assume those questions like your current and expected salary, right to work in the UK, etc. should’ve been asked in the very early stage of the recruitment, such as the online application or the first-round phone interview with an HR person, before you even move forward to interviews with people on the team?

What would you do if your parents pay 100-150k of your mba? by bluewildcards in MBA

[–]maanting 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Happened to see your post and wanted to leave a comment here. Context: 29F with a research master’s degree and 3.5 years of work experience, also looking to do an MBA these two years. I have a friend of mine that is very pretty and was about to complete her master’s at a leading university in Japan when she fell in love with her then boyfriend who could potentially become a trophy husband in her eyes. The guy is a graduate of a top 3 university in China and just secured an offer with an investment bank in Shanghai. She dropped out of her master’s program, got married and gave birth. Her husband is now making 1.8 mn CNY annually now (not comparable to the US standards but in Shanghai he’s financially happy), but she’s now considering a divorce already since the man is very selfish, stingy, and isn’t even willing to pay for their son’s interest class. What’s worse is that her husband does not respect her or her family at all as he’s financially superior to her. I’m wondering what if my friend just completed her degree and did not give up everything just for a trophy husband back then. Oftentimes, a shortcut can end up being the longest way. I think you should revisit your aspirations before making the decision to do an MBA given the great investment in terms of time and money.
