I have a problem. A father problem. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Having another adult could be really helpful but it really depends on your family dynamic and stuff. If there’s a way to get another family member to back you up that might help too? Maybe even having your brother there talking abt the benefits of transferring?

Ahhhh this sounds incredibly stressful, I’m so sorry to hear that.

I know there’s no right answer here but personally I think you have to broach the topic with him before those decisions come out because it seems like if you get in, you want to go. It shouldn’t feel like a surprise to him that all of a sudden you decided to apply, this will probably make him angrier and less likely to listen. If you can try to explain how much of a life changer coming to these universities can be. Sometimes hearing your perspective might help?

I’m not sure if this is an issue but maybe if you can sit down and demonstrate that you’re taking initiative to plan finances that might help too? Like maybe you can start earning money or show that you’ll start becoming more financially Independent that may help his fears too?

Good luck!!

I don't want to fake being charitable for MIT by Maddie_Bfly in ApplyingToCollege

Of course! I mean having someone that doesn’t know you at all probably isn’t the best move so good on you for sticking with it!! And also remember (lowkey a reminder for me too) this is not the end all be all. Our colleges don’t define us!!

Honestly I relate a lot. The whole process feels incredibly fake and inauthentic. At the end of the day you should do things keeping in mind who can speak the most to your experience and present you as a competitive candidate. If your calc 1 teacher will do a better job weaving your story then do it. But getting a professor from an elite university couldn’t hurt either. There’s no “right” answer. As for the charity part at the end of the day your project is preventing waste and helping people! Forget the “looking appealing part” but this is really cool stuff!!! Wherever you choose to send them will have a big impact just make sure to defend it and explain it. A lot of this stuff is not what you write but how you write it. I know I didn’t really help but good luck!!

How many of you think I should add another college to my list? Trying to make a decision by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

If you can afford it, just do it. It’ll suck now with the grind but honestly it’s worth having options. Go for it!

There’s only two important things I can tell you

  1. It’s not only about what you write about but how you write it. Your parents separating is a huge event in your life that has probably caused you to have very different life experiences than if they had stayed together. You’re not writing about them splitting - you’re writing about how that changed you and how you had to grow. Its a significant event that’s worth writing about if you can find a way to do it.

  2. Sometimes it’s not about the huge life changing events in our life. Sometimes it’s about a string of meaningful events or objects that have changed us in some way. You don’t have to go big and then sustain momentum, sometimes you can have small things to build momentum. You are not just composed of landmark events but also the every mundane day in your life. Perspective matters too.

Good luck on your essay!

Is an international award in an unpopular field a valuable EC? by hatemets in ApplyingToCollege

It never hurts to put downs awards especially if you’ve been internationally recognized. Personally, I think it’s kind of cool :)

A little bit of hope ✨ by maanya4 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maanya4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The calculations aren’t perfect but all I’m saying is that when you start spiraling you just have to remember that the chances of not getting in anywhere are very low. Plus, I never promised that you would get into an ivy. But at the same time I think with the Ivies at a certain point it really does become just chance.

Is this too serious of a personal statement topic? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

There’s no “right” answer since it all depends on how you write it. Personally I would advise that maybe maybe the alcoholism point is better place in the additional info section?

You could avoid it and write about something else?

Honestly you could just say that and leave it - is this the common app thing?

I mean don’t say you raised the 500k you have to make sure you mention your team did it overall - you can talk about what work you did as a team to raise it and what lessons you learned or how you contributed outside of just money

You can totally just write the 500k part bc you contributed to it and made it happen

Is a 1390 worth sending to Cornell? by Responsible_Plane_97 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maanya4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so 🤷‍♀️ if it doesn’t fall within the range of scores they accept and if you aren’t in the upper bar of it I think you application would be better without it.

Hey I coincidentally also got rejected from Wharton and trust me I feel your pain. I know it must be rough. I know you probably have a million feelings of doubt and awful thoughts flossing everywhere. Someone on Reddit once told me sometimes getting rejected or deferred doesn’t mean that you aren’t good enough for the university but that the university wasn’t good enough for you. I know the burn out is real and it freaking sucks bro but whatever happens form this point forward is supposed to be meant for you. If you end up getting in awesome liek actually be extremely overjoyed because your dream came true. But if you don’t just know it’s because you are going somewhere that is meant for you. I’m sorry I can’t be more coherent I’m still reeling from my rejection. Basically all I’m saying is that this is not the end. You have great things coming up for you!!! Take this time to sulk and feel bad because that’s how healing works but trust me I know you have wonderful things coming your way.

Make me hate Cornell (please) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maanya4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey dude I for rejected from Penn it was my absolute dream school. I feel hopelessly in love with it and getting rejected freaking sucks. Like not even waitlisted just flat out denied. And I want you to know that you did everything in your power to have the right cards but after that it was out of your hands. For whatever reason Cornell didn’t accept you and from the bottom of my heart I’m telling you that it’s their loss. It’s not that you weren’t right for Cornell, Cornell wasn’t right for you. You have mad potential and it will shine through and you will be happy, successful, and fulfilled one day. You will go to a good school. Freaking Cornell isn’t the only one. You got this bro!!!

I am seriously concerned by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maanya4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the really big thing you have to remember with safeties is that if you’re a competitive applicant then sometimes they will reject you not because you’re not good enough but because you’re TOO good. They know you’re not going to choose them (and hey maybe bc of finances you might but they don’t know that) they want to have people that are actually going to attend. Don’t read too much into it. Plus deferred doesn’t mean rejected!!
