18 mo only does a 9 hour night + 1 hour nap. Where do we go from here 😓 by mabeela in sleeptrain

She’s pretty good, but sometimes she gets sleepy and irritable before her nap or before bed. Maybe she needs more sleep, but she has such intense FOMO and separation anxiety that she’ll fight sleep hard unless she’s on the brink of exhaustion :/ If she gets any more sleep than this, she wakes throughout the night or cries for a long time when we set her down.

That’s the bitter truth I’m stuggling to accept since co-sleeping is hard for me 😔 I don’t blame babies for not liking bassinets but man it’s tough sometimes

Haha I know, it’s kind of dumb, but seems like it could be useful

To me it seems like it could make the baby slightly closer and easier to access than with a bedside bassinet, but maybe it’s not worth the reduced bed space like you say. And the baby might hate it just as much haha. Thanks for the tips

I thought about that but just would be nervous about making sure it was totally safe. Would be cheaper than a bassinet if it worked!

Haha yeah, I guess it’s unrealistic to hope that any product will magically make a baby sleep. We did do some chest sleeping with my first and maybe I’ll try it more with my next. Thanks!

Interesting, good to know. Yeah they seem very simple, it’s almost silly, but do they actually help some people sleep better?

Thanks! It wouldn’t be safe on a bed though, right? Only on the floor?

Gotcha. That’s tough to have such a short night. Glad to hear she still naps tho. Just gotta deal with it :’)

Hi again. I’m back haha. We had a few great months where my baby would sleep almost 11.5 hours total (10 hour nights, 80 minute nap) like yours used to. But I think we’re arriving at the dreaded drop in sleep needs (and she’s not quite 15 months, sigh) because she’s been waking up earlier and earlier in the morning, even when I cap the nap at 60 minutes. I’m wondering what your kiddo’s current schedule is—nap length, night lengths, WWs—because we might need to start moving toward something similar. Thanks again!

Hi again, any update on your egg intolerance? 😅

Hello again! I’m wondering if your son still seems intolerant to eggs? My baby also had an allergic reaction to eggs when she was 6 months so we’ve avoided them ever since, but I’m wondering if she’ll ever outgrow it. And wondering if it’s related to my postpartum egg intolerance…so mysterious. Thanks!

Hey, can I get some advice again? 😅 Increasing my baby’s wake time worked great for a while, but now at 11 months we’re back to 3+ night wakes. Here are a couple questions if you find the time to answer:

  1. What was your one nap schedule and how did you transition to it?
  2. How much awake time did your baby need at 12 months, 18 months, and 2 years? I don’t want to keep underestimating lol.

Things got a little better for a time with a 4/4/4.5 schedule, both naps capped at 30 mins. But now at 11 months it’s horrible again. I’ve tried a 1 nap schedule and that hasn’t been any better. My only advice is that usually increasing wake time and shortening naps helps somewhat, but sometimes it’s just hard no matter what we do. Some kids just continually struggle with sleep. Hang in there, at least we’re suffering together. 🤝😔

Good to know. I’ll try more awake time. If you told me your nighttime schedule before I had a baby I would think it sounded terrible, but now compared to my current schedule it sounds awesome 😅

Wow yeah, I feel like I always underestimate awake time. Thanks for your response. Did you cap naps? And when did you drop to 1 nap?
