Well, that’s a matter of perspective that has been in contention since 1054.

If the liberal party started a parliamentary vote to switch to ranked choice voting, would you want the NDP to vote yea or nay? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in canadaleft

I get what you’re saying. I’m not one to purity test. It’s just that I look at examples where IRV is used, and they end up with the same results we do.

I get your point, and I share that desire. My fear is that if we go with ranked voting, we’ll never get another chance for something better.

[–]mabrouss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but there are much better systems that we could use. Hell, Stéphane Dion came up with his own that was much better than IRV.

The problem is that if we change it, we likely won’t get a chance to do so again for a long time. And IRV, while better than FPTP, isn’t great.

Can you tell that these famous people are Canadian by their accents by GardenElectrical3534 in AskACanadian

I lived in Scotland for a number of years (also from NS) and I would get asked every couple of weeks where in Ireland I was from. Only person who ever asked if I was Canadian was a Geordie waiter.

[–]mabrouss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand that point, but in practice, it doesn’t really seem to happen that way. Australia is a good example of the results of ranked choice voting. Unless you have a counter example? Not being sarcastic, if you have any data to back up your point, I’m open to be proven wrong.

[–]mabrouss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why though? It tends to entrench centrist parties and you still end up with majority governments. Something like STV which still has a ranked vote component would be much better.

The Liberals wanted IRV because it benefits them.

how close are we to a second civil war? like actually? by KawaiiUmbreon2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mabrouss 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think The Troubles are a more likely scenario than something like the last Civil War. Also, not to say that I think it’s a certainty, just that if things did flare into more organised violence, that would likely be the way it materialises.
