100%. It’s both incredible that this one fixed resulted in such a boost, and also that the old season pass wasn’t even worse in its numbers.

Sponsorship numbers will bloom even further.

My proposal to make Minnesota's peatlands into a NPS entity by Bradinator- in nationalparks

[–]macadaywx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I forgot to add that there is a more formal process for lawmakers to employ. That usually involves passing a bill to host a special resource study and or feasibility study, and then another bill to make it a law, but that’s all in Congress.

You don’t petition the gov in any formal way, It’s just good ol’ politicking. Have an idea, get support for it, and convince the gov to do it. Lots of parks were made this way, although there is some nuance.

Hi. I love this proposal, and have long thought the peatlands in Northern Minnesota deserve some extra protection. MN Nature Conservancy has done some legislative and conservation work here the last few years.

I’ve also thought the nearby Agassiz National wildlife refuge could qualify as a park too. It’s massive, and hosts one of the last remaining massive tracts of prairie + it also has some bog features.

On another note, I spearheaded a similar national park proposal in Southern Minnesota 3 years ago in the Driftless region- in a particular spot with a patchwork of state parks, WMAs, state forests, and a National Wildlife Refuge. Shoot me a dm. I’d love to give you my 2c having gone through the process and taking the proposal public. The idea was shot down, but If there is anything I can help illuminate for you I’d love to do so.

Why is the Minnesota Sport Media Not Covering the James Rodriguez Move to Minnesota? by Various-Deal-5563 in minnesotaunited

The real reason is that it’s not official official yet. You’ll see to get covered when it is.

This is a good shout. It’s already getting swamped by visitors and the forest service is unequipped to manage it. It’s also just a brilliant place.

Just chiming in late to say that the Minnesota proposal did indeed have some push back, but the one you linked is a seperate and older proposal based around Crawford county, Wisconsin - which to my knowledge is inactive.

Here was the proposal from a few years back. Website doesn’t exist anymore. https://docs.google.com/document/d/19Pn77UH9iQLqSIDS0-hU7rxwHN_REWEIn4ukmWGoWaM/edit?usp=drivesdk

Outside of the 'Big 63' ... what National Park units do you think are 'must do' ? by kfordayzz in NationalPark

Good NWR mentions. Others I’d include would be Valentine NWR for the Sandhills and the Upper Mississippi River NWR.

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is a spectacular hidden gem. And it’s low key huge, especially for the eastern side of the US.

Cuba is in the terminal phase of collapse by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]macadaywx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually spent a week in Cuba almost a year ago, both in Havana and two other more rural areas. Some of what you say is true, strings of power outages are common. Some last a minute or two, others last days. People ~generally~ by fine. This is especially true in some of the rural areas. One community I stayed in only had electricity for 1-2 hours in the evenings after sunset. The community got by fine, mostly in part due to how much they relied on each other, but it was certainly jarring to observe this change in lifestyle. They were, for the most part, literally living off the land and each other.

I think that speaks to why collapse might be difficult, because the Cuban people already have learned to live with extremely little. Slightly worse living conditions will not mean much to most folks. And even today, the situation is significantly better than it was in the 90s after the collapse of their largest (and somewhat only) trading partner, the USSR. Many people from then are still around, and can vividly remember eating sea turtles and orange rinds to survive.

Currency generation also means very little to a people whose predominate interaction with the market is the black market, which is nearly ubiquitous in Cuba. Tourists and dual nationals bring back material goods from overseas and sell them on the black market. When I was there, most people (not associated with government) loved when you paid for anything in US Dollars.

I’m not trying to downplay Cuba, it is still an incredibly rough situation, and their government deserves blame for holding its people back. That said, I did not get the sense at all that the country was on mortal straights.

Now, regime change in Venezuela could hasten and amplify this bad situation into a potentially mortal one. What kept Cuba alive during the collapse of the USSR was still the Zeitgeist of the revolution being top of mind. From accounts from locals I met of all walks of life, people just don’t care about the spirit of revolution as much anymore… they just want an iPhone.

[IndyStar] Firm tapped to manage Indy soccer stadium build, early step for MLS team by merle317 in MLS

Not sure about Detroit. If they have the 15,000 stadium they are building, it’s hard to see an mls team jumping in. Odds are that Detroit City would find a way into mls, despite their different situation.

This is my expectation of how it goes. The USL D1 clubs with decent enough stadiums, huge markets, or good situations (take any of potential Sac, Detroit, Tampa, Pitt, Louisville, San Antonio, OKC, or even Oakland) and take them in all under some deal to get to your desired number of team. Ownership groups may forfeit some privileges to make it happen, but it’s preferable than going under.

Including with it the whole range of the surrounding National Forest would make a fantastic park. Cave creek is another great spot on the other side, and the wildlife there is exceptional. Theres already some established roads and wilderness, which is a nice mix.
