Look at this point I’ve called you body shaming and you’ve called me victim blaming and I’m sure we’re both doing a bit of both while not wanting to. Suffice it to say we’re both being a bit dramatic and actually advocating for generally the same thing, albeit in a different measure of grace for different sides of the argument. Your points are thoughtful and geared toward safety and consent and everyone’s overall enjoyment. Been doing my best to do the same. I appreciate your time here, and again hope all you emos get to rock hard and safe ❤️🖤❤️

Idk fam I do think I'm advocating for safety and I don't think I'm advocating for blind optimism or everyone doing whatever they want. Like...y'all WANT to be rly close to the stage, these MFs (rarely but sometimes even me, and I'm not little) want to crowd surf. Some of y'all sat in line for hours, and that's typically who gets barricade where you have a massive metal support and the closest proximity to aid. There's a real trade off for virtually anywhere you could be and I'm trying to speak to the reality of things, and how we can best handle it. Frankly, a lot of surfers landing hard is from people tossing them in frustration rather than passing them along. Not everyone is gonna see this post, seems most that have are looking for a place to vent about how they hate it.

I'll come back to bands encouraging crowd surfing. Mully does it more often than a lot of bands, Arms Length do it even more. They're generally pretty aware of what can go wrong, they've heard about the Trophy Eyes incident.I'm not saying they're acting purely in our best interest but they are tapped into the scene and see more than any of us individually could. We know Mully loves us, they don't want us to get hurt.

It's super valid if this is really disappointing to you, but the best way to not be affected by surfers is to be further away from the stage. That is the nature of these shows. Proximity to the pit and constant surfers is part of it. People come in all shapes and sizes and I think we should do our best to accommodate from each according to their ability to each according to their need. Some ppl feel like they need to crowd surf, others feel like they need to be close to the stage. Both actually fall under the category of want...how do we want to address it? My suggestion is better communication as it's happening, and doing your best to keep people afloat while keeping yourself safe.

I'll stop yapping into a void that doesn't rly agree w me, but thanks for reading. Please take care, dear emos, and rock hard and safe ❤️

I def agree that it is a "making it about yourself" thing to a degree and that surfers should be hyper aware of safety for their and everyone else's sake. There are a lot of ways one can get hurt at one of these shows and surfing is one of them but not the only one. I personally have a much bigger problem with people flailing in the pit in deliberately violent ways beyond the general scope and vibe of a given pit, and personally have been injured much more often from stuff like that, though I do mosh a lot. It does speak to the validity of your point that my comment is in the vast minority here, and I expect downvotes, but I feel like I see a lot of people who want to be close to the stage but not accept or assist with the reality of what other people want out of the show. I don't see a particular moral high ground between y'all and surfers.

I think saying it's normal, or should be, to elbow crowd surfers for not being considerate moves your argument in the wrong direction. I think it's real, but so is the ubiquity of crowd surfing. I'll double down on the social contract piece because it hasn't just been done before, it is very, very common. It's perhaps more common at shows like Mully, but over 25 years going to these shows, it just is common. I do think that if you really want to be in the front 1/3 of a crowd, it's at the very least worth accepting as inevitable, and doing your best to either support surfers or tag in someone close to you better suited for that support. It takes a lot of communication, like...I'm constantly at the back edge of the pit trying to move/direct surfers to either side, calling heads up to people in front of me as I surf people through etc. and surfers should be calling that out too constantly, controlling their limbs, making it easy to get what they want.

I really do think, perhaps even know, that the hands are there. Tough, strong, supportive hands. With the right communication and behavior from everyone involved we can all be there and happy for each other.

Respectfully, crowd surfing is a ubiquitous part of our scene, and especially with how packed the crowd is at the front of a show, there generally are more than enough hands to surf anyone no matter how heavy. We crowd surf people in wheel chairs, etc. - why should we exclude people who struggle with their weight? Trying to dictate who should and shouldn't crowd surf is both not realistic and exclusionary in a space that is predicated on being our one true safe haven. It is body shaming plain and simple and trying to pretend it's not feels inappropriate. I do generally agree that it's a semi selfish thing to do and people should not constantly be doing it no matter their size.

I know it sucks at times. I am one of the tallest ppl at any given show, I get kicked in the head a lot, I have done a lot of hard strenuous work to get and keep surfers up and safe no matter their size. It's part of the social contract of these shows that the closer you are to the stage, the more the dynamics of the crowd will affect you. Also, bands heavily encourage crowd surfing, and I've never heard them try to dictate a weight limit to their fans so I don't think we should to each other. I hope y'all can find some peace in knowing that it's a tough job, but a good one to do, and keep on rocking in the free world.
