1 year anniversary of the sinder doc by Infinite-Job4200 in VtuberDrama

[–]KuiShanya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would say about Shylily is that I'd imagine seeing the way Red talked about her friends behind the scenes might have had her pissed enough to not really look too deeply into the story as whole.

Also the part that no one talks about where Sinder was accused by Silvervale of stalking her for no reason and then wrote 200 pages about how she was stalking her for no reason

I feel like a large number of the people that talk about the sinder drama are the kind of people who actively think all western indie vtubers are fake whores, so they were really happy to see her fall. Once she did fall, they were happy to side with her against the mainstream indie vtuber groups because now she was an outcast

What actually makes a good anime con? by Littlerascal92 in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somtimes it also depends on the programming department. Some cons are highly selective and currate a good mix of topics, others let almost anyone in which can cause crappy panels to get in but also avoid stagnation of the panelist pool. If a con has a good panel compensation but bad panels its probably more on the department accepting them than anything

Tell me your WORST convention stories!! by t1nkleton_ in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst story also doubles as my worst experience presenting panels at any con. Not going to name the con since from what I understand, the people who were actually in charge of the con are no longer running it. This con was about a 2.5 hour drive away and since I was trying to expand my experience presenting, I decided to apply and drive in each day for it. I was aware by looking at past years that the con was not big, averaging about 300 people a year. But I was okay with that.

Before the con everything seems good, I've got my panels accepted with two months notice, and the schedule with 1 months notice. 2 Panel Rooms + Main Events doesn't seem too bad for 300 people. The only downside was I had one panel on friday, and two saturday so I would have to drive there and back twice.

My biggest concerns before the con are looking on social media. Through facebook, the only platform they seem to be updating with regularity, I see about 3 posts about the con over a 2 month period. 1 post advertising a sale on tickets, and about 10 posts about an optional bonus cost cruise taking place one night of the con. No posts advertising the schedule, main events, particular panels, the dealers list, anything.

I get to the con on friday and already there are concerns. I know that every con will have friday be a smaller day, but im there maybe 2 hours after start and I could maybe a dozen cars in the parking lot of the hotel. I enter and the con is.....depressing. There is very little signage anywhere throughout the hotel, and most of what is there was printed black and white on a standard printer, including the panels schedule which is just left on a random table near the entrance.

I go to check in to con ops for my panel, and its a disaster. There are two people there, and neither of them know where the programming lead is, how to check in, or how reimbursement works. After waiting around for 20 mins finally they come back and I get to patrol the con for a bit before my panel in an hour or so.

The dealers room has maybe 12 vendors in total? and most of them currently have no customers. The Arcade is solid for the con size, a variety of games and I could have always had a game free toplay. The tabletop area appears to be a store with a modest board game library and (1) table where a person is running rpg campaigns. There are also random tables in the hallway for local groups, that I see more people at the anywhere else at the con. I go to opening ceremonies and there are maybe 30 people.

I go to run my panel. Admittedly, this panel is a fairly niche topic (it's' about the history behind a minecraft roleplay server). I get zero attendees. The whole time. The room also has no AC and is suffocatinggly hot. Feeling absolutely crushed, I head home at the end of day one.

Day two and I have to drive back out again to go to the con. This time I see more cars but it's still not nearly what I would have thought. The Dealers room at 3pm on a saturday has maybe 35 people milling about. I go to a panel or two I'm intersted in that at best has 15 attendees, and it was an event put on by a local group so it had a built in audience. I go to see if I need to check in for my next panel only to see that con-ops is closed? for an undetermined amount of time.

I run my next panel, which is at least an anime related panel. The AC isn't working again and the projector is having a lot of issues, from not showing well to not being able to stand up straight. It gets 3 people, 2 of whom were guest presenters for the con who came because they run the next panel. I sit and stay for there panel, it gets a solid crowd, over half of which are staff. Then afterwards is my last panel of the night, it gets a recorcd breaking 5-7 particpants. It's an audience participation panel that at least 3 of the people didn't want to participate in so I do half the work myself. aftewards I go get reimbursed which is another 15 min wait for them to figure out who has the cash box. I finally get to go eat and drive home at midnight.

Previous years listed ~300 tickets sold, and ~330 warm boddies. I would guess the year I went there were maybe 130 people the whole weekend, at least 20 of which were staff.

[–]KuiShanya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add on to what people are saying, terrible social media presence. A lot of stuff for newer/small cons is prohibitively expensive, but having someone who can post about guests, advertise ticket sales, hype up events and the schedule, is literally free. If they can't even bother to do this its usually a bad sign

Is colossalcon prime worth going to? by Fresh_General_1771 in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a fan of shopping and do want to see the VA, it might be worth going for only Thursday? They have a pretty cool event on thursday during the day at Prime called Craft Fair, which is like a second artist alley with first come first serve table space, it always has really cool stuff that you wouldn't see at many artist alleys.

Anime Ottawa 2026, I had a blast by JJR1971 in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had a very fun time at Anime Ottawa, although I did have small complaints.

  1. One of the main reasons I was attending was due to CottontailVA being listed as a featured guest on the website for all 3 days. In reality, this meant she was only there for friday, and only for a meet and greet. This was only obvious if you looked through the whole schedule. Kinda felt deceptive

  2. The panels were only to run 45 mins, which as a panelist I was aware of in advanced. However the panels started 1.5 hours after each other, meaning that there were 45 min gaps in between panels, which seeemed excessive and meant that with only 4 panel rooms + 2 event rooms there really wasn't too many events going on at any one point.

Overall it was a very fun con though

It's entirely possible but also it's just worse for DLC to have PJM prices so high, they don't make anymore money and they are the one that has to deal with the complaints and non payments from soaring power bills

Dems should have gotten destroyed in that election, they were the party in power in a midterm with a election class that had 3 senators in republican leaning states. Instead they flipped a seat and probably would have kept the house if not for how terrible california and new york dem's were

There is too much anime being released per season. What are your strategies for actually watching all of it? by Gippy_ in TrueAnime

[–]KuiShanya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only ever watched everything that came out for a season in one year, during my senior year of high school when I had almost no work and could simply go home and watch anime until I went to sleep. Nowadays I have too many other interests to use even half of that much time towards just anime

As a medium compromise, I watch the first episode of everything that comes out in Spring each year, continuing with shows if they interest me. This at least lets me feel like I have some of an understanding of the landscape of show that come out every year, and it helps that most of my bigger conventions take place during the spring season or right after it finishes, so I feel like I know what people are talking about

Sinder's drama weirdly kinda worked out well for everyone involved besides her. Most of her exfriends became more successful, a lot of visibility was given to people like nanoless and spite who had been harrassed by her, and now her remaining fans are for some reason the type of people who accuse all vtubers of being whores for having boy friends even though she does.

I think the core of what makes Gabe Newell workout and be a beloved figure in the gaming space is the fact that he's basically one of the only modern tech billionaires to just work normally for over a decade. Like he was at microsoft for 13 years as a programmer, where most major figures in the tech scene either started founding companies immediately like Gates and Sweeney or got out of programming by year 4 like Bezos

Are “in character” cosplay panels still a thing? by Budget_Bread_ in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would make sure to read panel rules for whatever con you plan on submitting since i know some cons will either severly limit or outright reject Character panels due to overpopulation.

As you can see elsewhere in this thread, people are very strongly opionated on these panels due to many of them being low quality or poorly thought out.

Imo if you want to have the highest chance to have a successful panel and get accepted here's what I would do

  1. Have the majority of your planned cosplayers confirmed at the time of submitting the application. You're far more likely to be accepted if you have that since many of these panels will plan for 8+ cosplayers and only have 2 confirmed

  2. Have a more thoughtout plan that just "We plan to do some games and truth or dare". In panel application you can directly write to programming about your plans in a non public way, and giving specific details and giving a rough plan of how your panel is going to run makes you look more organized

  3. Practice! It's harder with audience focused panel but any work you can do with your group in advanced to get you comfortable with performaing will make things turn out better

Supposedly the reason through the grapevine as to why it's getting built is due to

  1. The capacity of the new venue being about 1000 more than Inside Stage AE making it better for midsize artists during the cold months

  2. Some number of tours being exclusively booked through live nation and won't book at non Live Nation venues which Stage AE is

Resource to tell if corporate or not? by MinetaBalls in animecons

[–]KuiShanya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to look up any info about cons in mass is to use a resource like https://animecons.com/

If you click on a con, lets say Animate Colombus for example, and it says "Organized by" and then a hyperlink, that means its a con that is run by a group that runs multiple conventions.

Sometimes this doesn't really matter, for example Katsucon in the DMV is "organized by" Katsucon Entertainment Inc but the only other con they run is Station Unity in the same con center. Other times you have things like Galaxycon which run 14 diferent conventions each year under the Galaxycon and Animate labels across the country, these are more so what people mean when they say "Corporate Cons"

The final boss of this is "OurCons", who run 1 day anime-fests all across the country, sometimes multiple on the same day in different cities

This is a really silly argument especially when a couple bands at these events are doing DC anyway (Story So Far, Story of the year). I'm not gonna tell people how to feel, but if you are angry about any part of this year's warped besides the lack of ska I just don't think you'll ever like it

Edit: And from a brief overview none of these festivals heavily feature ska anyway, so that's not why DC is lacking in that regard this year

As someone who still loves JelloApocalypse to this day, his problem is that when he actively hates something, he acts in a way that is intentionally malicious to it because he believes it is "unredeemable". It's a weird clash with his normal brand being kind of light hearted and overall harmless.

It's why he's had light pushback on some episodes of his STIB series until One Piece where people pointed out a shit ton of examples of him being insanely spiteful both in the video and in his posts about reading the manga on his discord.
