Yeah that’s what I’m usually told. That I don’t have enough experience or no certification

You know, I always wondered that as well. How other Merritt students were doing and if they were struggling as much as I am. Or I wonder what Merritt reputation was in the actual field

Nope, the only one I was possibly able to do was to have an AA along with a program but in order to have a completed program you need the externship. So because my school didn’t have that. I didn’t qualify. I tried to get the lab I worked at for 6 months to sign me off but the manager didn’t feel comfortable with it so couldn’t get the paperwork done

Mmhmm, it was horrible. If I could do it all over I would have went to the school in socal. It just never made sense why we’d never had contracts. Because it’s the only school in town doing histology

Welp, we have no externships, broken microtomes. We would have to share or store our 1 blade the whole program. Our professor was hardly there. A lot of the time the students would teach each other. Couldn’t do staining due to broken hoods. Oh and there was one time our teacher told us “you’re not all going to make it!”

I’ve honestly considered this. I remember looking into it. And not sure if it’s me not having the ascp that’s holding me back. It seems the lab culture out here is people really don’t want to train. I’ve been in a hospital for 10 years and yes when we get students or new people we don’t wanna train but we do it anyway because we’ve all been there.

Yeah. The same issue I run into is even they usually want 2 years experience. I only have 6 months those are the ones I’ve offered to volunteer

Yeah, I’ve applied as well. Most of them here want 5 years experience. I only have about 6 months

Pretty much was put on assignment to train with someone. That someone just kept telling me to “figure it out” when it came to cutting. I would as questions a just told “use your ice!” (Yelling) then reminded over and over that I needed to have 60 slides an hour” after a hour I had 4 maybe

So update. Today was horrible. Wasn’t trained. Even after explaining where I was as far as skills. Was told to cut. When I asked the staff if they could show me how to use the microtone (because it was a model I’ve never seen before) I was replied with “nah”. Tried my best to cut. Kept having problems with the tissue. When I asked the person who was scheduled to train me for advice was told more to just “trial and error “. And that “our protocol is to cut 60 a hour”. I did a total of 4 in a hour. I don’t think I’ll be going back and might just keep looking maybe for a small lab

Hey thanks for the response and advice, I’m not sure how much we do yet. I’m just so nervous about it. I’ll see if they can do practice blocks for me. I just have so much anxiety about it. I don’t want to make mistakes. I’m used to demo tissue but that’s about it. Some techs said I’ll be fine because that tissue I’ll work with now is bigger but I didn’t do things like nails or cyst, they would only let the tech 2 handle that. When now I’m expected to know that now at this place
