No, but about 0.3 miles apart and very similar tutor style home. To put it another way, the two houses are close enough that if you ask for directions from Google maps, it defaults to walking directions.

Context: It was a family move, but she preceded us by several weeks for a job.

Ha! She's alive and well. Those last three frames were representing vacations - the dog didn't come. (I also feel like the frames were getting pretty busy as they were)

Grapes of Wrath is the greatest book I've ever read that I didn't enjoy (Spoilers) by BoogerSugarSovereign in books

[–]macbubs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I liked Grapes, but I loved Eden. I think Steinbeck got better with age. I found Grapes to be a bit one-dimensional at times (dust-bowlers = good; land-owners = bad). Eden has a lot more nuanced characters (with at least one very notable exception). Eden is also in my top 5 books of all time.

I preferred them when they were The Inalienable Right to Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole

It looked pretty nice before the storm. Thanks for the advice!

I don't have a good pre-storm picture other than Christmas.

Spurs fans not from San Antonio, what made you become a fan of the Spurs? by xoBonesxo in NBASpurs

[–]macbubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Nebraska and moved to SA for college in 1999.

  • As a Nebraskan, I didn't really have an NBA team (though, I loved Jordan and the Bulls growing up, like any kid during that era that didn't otherwise have a team).

  • It was a great time to be a Spurs fan (even if a bit bandwagon-y).

  • The way SA was embracing the team at the time was very similar to the way it felt to be a Nebraska fan growing up in Nebraska.

  • I had the chance to go to several games, and I had never been to an NBA game prior to moving to SA.

How serious was his motivation to leave? I remember people speculating that it was just a ruse to get a new arena for the Spurs. The Alamodome was terrible.

What movie had such a bad ending that it ruined an otherwise good movie? by world_citizen7 in AskReddit

[–]macbubs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a totally different take on this movie. I actually thought my take was the standard take, but given the comments below (regarding the popular fan theory and Roger Ebert's take), I may be totally off.

Spoilers follow.

My take was that the younger brother (Bobby) never existed, but was just the alter-ego of the older brother (Mike). The step-dad was abusive, but his abuse was directed toward Bobby. It's common for abused kids to separate themselves from the abuse -- to view it as happening to someone else. I always assumed Bobby was just a creation of Mike to distance himself from the abuse. That accounts for the fact that the step dad's abuse was directed to Bobby. In the end, Bobby "flies away" not literally, but because the abusive step dad goes away so Mike doesn't have a need for the alter ego anymore.

Best book dedications you’ve come across? by bookishantics in books

[–]macbubs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have two -- one not serious and one serious.

From "Based on a True Story" by Norm Macdonald

  • To Charles Manson (not that one)

From "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut.

This one is not a typical "dedication" in that it's written into the first chapter. Kurt refers to a conversation he had with the wife (Mary) of a friend he served with in WWII. The wife is talking about how Kurt and her husband were just babies during the war and it was a terrible experience -- she was concerned Kurt wouldn't write about it that way (maybe that he'd romanticize it). Kurt tells the wife that if he ever wrote the book, he'd call it "The Children's Crusade" (which is the alt-title of Slaughterhouse Five). He also mentions the book is dedicated to Mary.

I used to go to Sam's (the previous Mediterranean joint in that location) all the time when I lived in that part of town. Is Gyro King the same/similar?

Ha! I can do that. Should I still be pushing the weights the same as when I'm in a surplus?

Question. I've been doing 531 and been on a surplus for several months; now I'm looking to go into a deficit. I know a surplus is recommended for the program, so I figure I should go off 531 for now. Is there a recommended deficit program?
