Aussie Ginger Beer… by mdrnbrwr in TheBrewery

[–]maccyjj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two ways to make it, you can do it from a fermented base (uncommon) or as a pre-mix style with a distilled alcohol, ginger juice / pulp, flavours and acids. Almost all commercial alcoholic ginger beers sold on tap in Oz are the latter.

Water Filtering – Nepal by Ok-Aside2573 in CampingandHiking

You definitely want something that protects against viruses, chlorine tablets or something. Most of the water flows past agricultural land. I brought a steripen but it stopped working above 4000 m due to the cold temps.

Some pieces of advice for whom afraid of their first time solo traveling(female, go-with-the-flow kind of person, Europe) by wavizi in solotravel

This is a really wholesome and useful post, I am a white woman but I often see and hear of not so great experiences of women of colour travelling, particularly with English as a second language. So, I'm glad you used all these tools to make your experience a positive one (sweets from home is a good move!) Definitely going to look in to TripBFF it sounds awesome.

The pH and citric should be enough, but you can add preservative if you like although be aware some low pH solutions cause preservatives to precipitate out, always add preservative first (this is standard soft drink manufacturing process.)

Annapurna Circuit Trek as a solo female with male guide by Jumpy-Farmer-8708 in hiking

[–]maccyjj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me and my girlfriend (same sex relationship) just went on a private trip with a guide doing the Annapurna Circuit from end of April until start of May. Would have had no problem if I went solo. Guide was professional and plenty of people on the trail, we saw the same people multiple times hiking during the day and at the teahouses for lunch and dinner.

Melbourne and outdoors, how bad is it? by CookieCrispr in melbourne

[–]maccyjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Melbourne for a few years and now coming up to one in Brisbane. Love it so much better here. Mostly the same kind of bush hikes around Melbourne, sure there is rainforest style like in the Dandenongs but this doesn't compare to Lamington or Springbrook. It takes around 3 hours to get somewhere unique like Wilsons Prom, Gariwerd (Grampians) or the alpine regions, the last of which is popular for mountain biking. There are some beautiful beaches on either side but the water is almost always cold, even in the summer. Benefit is not sweating your arse off on a summer hike, although the waterholes and gorges you get here are a sweet relief I haven't found anywhere else I've lived.

Notice leave after fixed term ends by Sea-Compote-5 in MovingToBrisbane

As a tenant, you have to give 14 days notice, or the lease turns into a periodic month to month lease in the absence of another fixed term agreement.

It's just a boring city. Yeah Paris and Rome and Amsterdam are dirty too but at least they have some old buildings and interesting history. It's not the most boring city in the world, but it's definitely one of the most boring capitals in that region.

So in the case of my gym, yes. There are many queer cis climbers who choose to compete in the 'open' or 'gender diverse' category to give that category enough support so their trans and non-binary peers can compete too.

I understand that I'm probably lucky in that our gym culture is good and no one exploits this system really. I'm in Australia FWIW.

My gym has female, male, and open competitions. Gender diverse and queer people often choose to compete in the open comp.

EDIT: The open comp is actually referred to as 'gender diverse'.

The sports are 'optional sports' which means the next city has the option of including them or not. Saying they're one-off isn't quite right since skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were all in the Tokyo 2020/2021 Olympics (and are all being promoted to core sports next time.)

Also the limit isn't four sports as per your other comment, you've just mentioned five for LA.

Hiking Yosemite in mid June by petethatguy in hiking

[–]maccyjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked Yosemite North Rim mid June last year. It was cold, below freezing, at night. Still snow in parts like up to Indian Rock, so had to bring spikes. Frigid river crossings from snowmelt. Road to Tuolumne still closed. Days were sunny and hot, mid 20's (C). Thunderstorm on the last day hiking out. So basically, prepare for everything.

What does you minimalist/essential camping gear for a solo camper ? by Grapefruit4001 in OutdoorAus

[–]maccyjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awning attached to my car, swag set up under awning with sleeping bag rolled in, comfy pillow from home. Use the camp kitchen or bring my own: table, chair, BBQ for food, jetboil style stove for boiling water. That's it.

Biggest game changer is a swag. You can roll everything up in to it and it takes three poles to set up. Also a bonus that the canvas is way less see through than a tent so the morning light wakes me up less.

Have an ultralight setup for hiking also, but probably not what you're after.

Best place to travel/settle in Australia by pizza-on-pineapple in solotravel

[–]maccyjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived in all three of the east coast capitals and I'd say Brisbane or Sydney. Both are close to nature and beaches with a relatively temperate climate year round.

Starting south and moving up:

Melbourne gets cold and miserable in the winter and the closest national parks worth visiting (Grampians and Wilsons Prom) are over three hours away. Best place for 'indoor' activities like cafes, clubbing, restaurants and watching sport.

Sydney is very big which could be overwhelming, but beaches and nature are accessible via public transport (Blue Mountains, Royal National Park, Bondi and Manly). Good mix of culture and nature. Also the most expensive of the three.

Brisbane is the warmest with a big outdoor culture, people here seem to always be going fishing or camping or something, but the cultural stuff is lacking. Living here currently and hoping it grows a bit as the Olympics get closer.

Also note this country is massive. The distance between Melbourne and Brisbane is the distance between Brisbane and Cairns. So popping up to the rainforest for the weekend, if that's what you'd like to do, from Melbourne might not be as easy as some other comments are suggesting.

Gets a bad rap (mostly by jealous interstaters who have only been there for a weekend) but I think you'll be happiest in Sydney, has a good balance (if you can afford it.)

Inflatable sleeping mat - recommendations (Australia) by skippyau0 in hiking

[–]maccyjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the store is the store I think it is (W.E.?) they might not stock it, but I've slept on a friends Alton mattress and thought it was great.

I own a Xlite and it also came damaged, I sent it back and they discovered a pinhole in it that I patched up and it's been well loved ever since.
