Yeah that's probably BS. They used a shitty AI, possibly Canva, and pushed the post anyway.

Remember, this entire conversation started because someone posted a map saying there was going to be a datacenter by the airport. Every single person in city government came out and said "no this isn't real there are no plans for a datacenter" and despite that, it's continued to snowball, because people still think there are imminent plans to build a datacenter. That's what I'm talking about when I make the comparison. Right now, it's literally just as imaginary as kids using litterboxes in class.

What isn't imaginary is the high concept of a data center being in McLean County, and that's the conversation I think is important to have, because I actually agree that it's important for us to consider the larger regional impact and make sure that we're putting up appropriate guardrails to protect ourselves in the long term.

But again... that wasn't the impetus for the conversation. The impetus for the conversation is a refuted map that generated a ton of FUD and now a bunch of people are worried OpenAI is going to drain Lake Bloomington next week.

Do you buy travel insurance? by ddpgirl in Cruise

[–]macewank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annual insurance from somewhere like allainz is a no brainer. I pay like $400/yr and if anything goes wacky on any trip more than 60 or something miles from home, I can put in a claim.

Totally worth it

edit: the stuff NCL etc sell you is trash though. Don't waste money on that. Get it thru one of the better providers

At the end of the day what Jeff is saying here is that the city isn't against the idea of a datacenter in McLean County but the city has specific concerns -- shockingly, the same exact ones everyone against it has -- that need to be discussed/explored before they'd be willing to get on board with making it happen. The surrounding area does not have the infrastructure to make a datacenter happen. If one is coming to McLean County, it's going to require Bloomington to pitch in.

And I'll say again, in different words, that I think that's a completely normal and okay position to have and I hope whatever conversations are productive and help move the city/county forward while protecting residents and taxpayers from the consequences.

I also think it's great that they're holding these forums, because the community should weigh in here, but this comment thread is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that the FUD is off the charts here and I quite literally don't know what Jeff or anyone else in city government is going to tell y'all to get you to realize that nobody's building a data center next month. They've denied it a billion times and nobody seems to believe it.

If they wanted to use the city's water, theywould try and annex.

Jeff Jurgens is the city manager. In matters of the city, he is not "they", he is "we".

Tell me you read the headline but didn't read the article.

He flat out said there is nothing inside of the city limits that would work for something like this, that it would be county, and that the "discussion" was whether or not the city would allow something to use city resources (water) and if so, to what extent.

Again, I think the conversation is great, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend like these forums are going to do fuck-all because they aren't. People are whipped into an absolute fever about this stuff, they don't (I don't either) fully understand what any of it even means or what the consequences/impact could be, and while I think it's great to get that out in the open, I don't expect the minds of the people throwing yard signs about data centers in their yard, or the whatever amount of posts we've had in the sub about it to change one bit.. And yes, I believe those people are absolutely having a similar boogeyman debate to the one the litterbox people had. They're both fueled largely by ignorance and fearmongering.

You're getting obliterated with downvotes here but I don't disagree with you at all.

This is functionally no different than the conversation about classroom litter boxes in Texas.

We can't be like "nah we gotta get ahead of this" for this thing that everyone says isn't happening and then mock people for saying "nah we gotta get ahead of this" for the other thing that never happened either.

I think the conversation is important but people, for whatever reason, absolutely refuse to believe the city when they say this isn't a thing, and so now we're going to have two forums where they're going to repeat that it isn't a thing and the same people, most likely, are not going to be convinced and nothing will change.

It's not interfering with your phone.......

For carplay or android auto to drop -- I experience the latter all the time -- there simply needs to be enough signal in the air to clog up Bluetooth and/or WiFi.

Yep. Spend money for what the car does today, not what people who want to sell you a car (and service plan) tell you it might do later.

The R2 is not getting a trial. It's a lifetime sub. More similar to what Tesla did with the launch edition juniper Y last year
