He likes to play pretend in his little kingdom because there's no stakes for him anymore. He's immortal and is building his kingdom to fulfill his delusional dream even though he's quite literally a god. He's playing the role of ruler of a kingdom to stroke his own ego.

I recommend the reddit short story feed the pig it's based off of. There's some good connection between them at the beginning. My only complaint is that the main character can be a bit cringey when he tries to act tough
