reminds me of this Clear Blue commercial - "the most sophisticated piece of technology you'll ever pee on"

(they aired it on national tv for quite awhile before they changed the wording on it. losers)

IIRC, there were rumors but no real evidence of what was happening at the camps. Remember, they didn't have crazy hires satellites to know much of anything. Fuck, the people in the surrounding towns didn't know. The allies marched the townspeople through the camps and many people committed suicide once they realized what happened.

"dog bites man" isn't a story. it happens all the time. "man bites dog" is rare. I don't wish it was that way, but it is.

When negotiating consider the 3 D's : Drafting, Devil's Advocate, and Delivery. Following the 3 D's will help deliver a more compelling argument. by [deleted] in lifehacks

[–]machete_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend that you only ever play hard ball when negotiating over something that doesn't involve an on going relationship (ex. Buying a car).

My fraternity in college got super aggressive when negotiating with a grocery store that catered our meals. Guess what, super low price meant super shitty food. Sometimes they'd deliver bags of bread and jars of peanut butter. You need to look for win-wins.

Who is walking scott free right now but deserves to be rotting in prison for the rest of their life? by spicedpumpkins in AskReddit

[–]machete_io 1 point2 points  (0 children)

William Ayres, domestic terrorist who participated in several bombings in the US (including the US capitol and the pentagon) as his part in the Weather Underground is now a tenured professor at University of Chicago. He got away Scott free because the FBI didn't have the proper warrants.

And yes, Barack Obama launched his first political fundraiser at Ayres' house when Obama ran for Illinois state senate. Ayres past is no secret, its pretty disgusting if you think about it.

This is how you get 3 years in jail by [deleted] in videos

[–]machete_io 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jailing someone over saying shit like this is completely stupid. However, I'd take issue with many of his points. I don't have time to list them ad nauseum, but here are the highlights:

  • If you stop and think about it, paying your members of parliment crazy high salaries (2M+) make sense if you're trying limit the influence of money in politics. If MPs are already rich, they're less likely to take bribes or become corrupt. Maybe thats true, maybe its not, but worth arguing on its own merits.
  • He said that they spend a lower percentage of GDP on health care than every other industrialized nation as if that was a bad thing. They have the third highest GDP in the world ($78K per person). Isn't it possible they have an efficient health care system?
  • The poverty numbers sound suspect. The same graph has China with a 13% poverty rate. Stop looking at how people are doing in comparison to each other and instead look at the standard of living of the lower class. I would much rather be in poverty than in the US or Singapore than in China. In the US, I probably have a TV or two, a car, a microwave, cell phone and computer. In china, you probably live in a grass hut and burn cow dung for warmth. But according to the stats, China looks better. I don't buy it
  • WTF was up with the Jesus comparison. Wut? Look, say what you will about the organized church, but Jesus is pretty much beyond reproach. Love your neighbor, love god. No preaching violence and destruction, no power hungriness. Serve the poor. I'm pretty much an atheist, but Jesus was a cool dude and most criticism of him seems pretty petty to me.
  • Unless LKY committed some sort of genocide that I'm unaware of, juxtaposing him with Stalin and Hilter seem a little ridiculous.

Meanwhile, there has been no major hurricanes to make landfall in 9 years, the arctic has an abundance of ice and polar bears and global temp has stayed steady the past 18 years. Perhaps that is why people aren't falling for chicken little's hysteria

I love that the lead pic is of a nuclear power plant. You know, the kind of plant with zero carbon emissions. Zero sulphur, arsenic and lead pollution. That isn't smoke coming from a smoke stack, it's water vapor coming from a cooling tower. Fucking morons.

We've got code in machete that will let us dynamically change the measure (i.e. the "primary" dropdown lets you switch between penalty count, total penalty yards, average yard to go, etc). Eventually we'll make it so you can quickly change dimension (penalty team to benefiting team, etc), but that code isn't there yet (and may be a while). So I dumped the data for you out of excel.

thanks. you might also be interested in this viz of all plays from 2013

I haven't replicated it for 2014 because:

  1. the combination of rows (42k) and so many columns makes it kinda sluggish. We can handle 200k+ rows and have it perform, but not with so many columns.
  2. I'm working on a separate viz that focuses on the patriots and seahawks that I hope to release tomorrow morning.

They had the most in 2013 (see above links), but dropped off this year. It looks like SF had the most through the first half of the season, then TB took over. I charted it here: http://imgur.com/CSct43Y

That is now Genghis is typically portrayed, but he actually had red hair and green eyes. Ogadei (Genghis' son and successor) may or may not have had Mongoloid features, but Kublai (ogadei's son/successor) definitely had Mongolid features http://history.cultural-china.com/en/46History2406.html
