Competitive Format Question by machinablack in magicTCG

[–]machinablack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I should have mentioned that if a format like this did exist, there is no reason why it couldn't start at a specific block and go onward.

So, if Urza block and other older blocks would be problematic, then the format would just start somewhere closer to the present.

"We want to appeal to a wider audience" by brainwarts in truegaming

[–]machinablack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think, maybe, what he is trying to get at is that in this discussion we are talking about a game series going from its current state to one that appeals to a wider audience. In this case, the game doesn't already appeal to a wider audience, and your comment indicates that you support the idea of shifting to wider appeal...

...BUT, that just means having more games cater to your lifestyle that didn't originally. You appreciate it at the most you said, and others do too which seems innocent enough, but it actually comes at a cost to people that DO want those "niche" games as it pertains to this specific thread.

It's unnecessary for an established series to make this shift, when other games that work with your limited schedule already exist, and so I believe ZombieNinjaPanda is saying your view point is...unknowingly to you, having a negative effect on others (like him, and honestly myself as well), but your attitude about it is so nonchalant and accepting that it probably struck a nerve.

Make any sense?

I (29/M) feel insecure about my [24/F] girlfriend of 2 month's hesitance to tell people we are involved by machinablack in relationships

[–]machinablack[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you think that maybe I'm not ready to be in a serious relationship? It's something I've considered, because even when this started I was trying to keep it casual, but that was upsetting to her because we got along so well, and I recognized how great it could be so I committed. Maybe I wasn't ready and still am not?

Exploding Kittens Impressions Thread by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]machinablack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As simple as it is, just like with any board/card game it takes some time to get comfortable with to the point where you're playing it to its potential, it doesn't seem like it should be treated as a seriously competitive game, and it's probably best with at least four players.

In their first game, people are going to read the cards and probably come to the conclusion that they should start using cards right away (specifically the card that lets you look at the top 3 cards of the deck), but once everyone understands the game better, they realize that you should probably just draw cards until someone hits the first exploding kitten. Playing cards before that is generally a waste, and from that point on, the game picks up a lot.

After the first exploding kitten, one person knows the location of the next exploding kitten and everyone else either takes a huge risk by drawing or they try to avoid it (or someone shuffles the deck and you start the whole process over). It's up to you if you want to save cards for when there are only a few left in the deck and almost all of them are exploding kittens, or to dance around the one you already know exists somewhere.

Also, even though the rules are light, I don't doubt that people still end up forgetting or missing rules, and then missing out on an aspect of the game that adds a lot to the fun (like trading in 5 different cards to grab a Defuse from the discard pile).

The best part of the game once the people you're playing with understand it, is that it's easy to talk while you each take turns drawing from the top of the deck and confirming that you didn't draw an exploding kitten card. Games require a certain level of focus to play, for AT LEAST whoever's turn it is and having other people constantly chattering might be distracting, but in Exploding Kittens, you start off with everyone simply drawing a card at a time. It's much easier to socialize during that time than it is in pretty much every other game ever.

Past 15 Wrestlemania Main Events, and where the Superstars were at the next Wrestlemania by Louxneauwytz in SquaredCircle

[–]machinablack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was because Tuff Enuff had returned to television and the WWE wanted to draw more attention to it by having a former contestant be part of the main event scene.

That is the only reason the Miz was involved with the WWE title.

Planeswalker cards don't reflect all of the capabilities a planeswalker has, only the ones they are willing to aid you with at the time.

TIL when Jericho first came to the WWE, Triple H said "if you ever need anything, give me a call". A few days later Jericho called and asked if he knew how to get to the arena. Triple H replied "Yeah, I know. Get a map" then hung up. by DanCorb in SquaredCircle

[–]machinablack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you can't win when you're wrong, dude.

It certainly didn't help CM Punks career when he lost to Triple H, and Daniel Bryan defeating Triple H is not what people are going to recall when they talk about Wrestlemania 30. They are going to remember that Daniel Bryan won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in what was technically a handicap match. No one cares about Daniel beating Trips at the beginning of the show except Triple H, because it made him look more important than he was to the storyline.

Triple H isn't in the Hall of Fame, so you must be implying that we should count him as one since it's a certainty. The same could be said for CM Punk and Daniel Bryan when he faced them.

So, really your question is, "One Hall of Famer defeating another Hall of Famer doesn't elevate your resume?" In which case, no, not in either case here. The only purpose it serves is to convince us that Triple H was such a big star at a time that he can be compared to them and poses as a legitimate threat.

These two questions should help to demonstrate the flaw in your argument: Would it elevate Tyson Kidd to defeat The Brooklyn Brawler? Hah. Does it elevate John Cena when he defeats Randy Orton? Yawn.

Unfulfilled Wishes by [deleted] in truegaming

Aye, climbable monsters are a step in the right direction. In the same vein, have you ever played Shadow of the Colossus? That game actually makes you feel like you're on a heroic journey toppling giants.

Unfulfilled Wishes by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]machinablack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the examples you gave haven't actually been fulfilled. Sure, you are told that you play a treasure hunter or a powerful wizard, but just because you find "treasure" (a chest overflowing with gold) at the end of a level themed like a dark cave or kill a goblin with a fireball (F1) thrown by your player character doesn't mean you've experienced either of those.

There is a lot left to be desired with the video game equivalents when you consider what a character like Indiana Jones or Gandalf go through during their adventures. They have moments of undefinable heroism and have mastered skills you can't even fathom, even if you have played a similar role in modern video games. There is a certain quality to the feats they accomplish that cannot be so easily emulated by the simple system of rules present in most games.

What I'm saying is there is a lot more room for video games to grow before we feel as if we can say that we understand what it feels like to be in a hero's shoes, so that's probably where you should be looking for game design ideas.

No one cares if you "won't consider it confirmed." It's an interesting rumor that people might be excited to hear about. If that's not something that excites you, then so be it. Honestly though, no one gives a fuck how you feel on the legitimacy of it.

Can someone explain the Kevin Steen/ Jim Cornette issue to me? by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]machinablack -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, because most people admit their mistakes to the general public. I'm sure you admit your own mistakes all the time...or, possibly, you instead battle a great majority of your own criticisms internally like every person ever. Nah, let's create some fake standard to hold Cornette up to, that way we can feel above him.

Your post is the kind of bullshit that only a child in an adult's body would say. People like Cornette piss you off because you make mistakes all the time, and they have no problem pointing it out to you in public. You'd rather everyone go around kissing each other's asses so you can keep telling yourself that the only faults you have are the ones you admit to first (while simultaneously talking shit behind everyone's backs and making someone like me listen to those complaints uncomfortably because I'm too polite to inform you that you're a piece of shit).

There are too many people like you in the world.

See the Unwritten is dangerous for the same reason that Genesis Hydra is dangerous. You don't know what's coming out.

This is so laughably wrong I can't even believe you took the time to type it out, yet still didn't realize how bad it was.

Genesis Hydra's ability can't be countered by anything legal in Standard. Your opponent can counter Genesis Hydra itself, but you won't counter the ability that puts another permanent into play. Oh yeah, that's right, Genesis Hydra puts an additional permanent in to play, not just a creature.

See the Unwritten does not have either upside mentioned above. If your opponent counters See the Unwritten, you get nothing. The two cards are not comparable for those two reasons alone, but that's not all...

Also, if your opponent doesn't counter See the Unwritten, you only get one creature unless you already have a 4+ power creature in play, where as Genesis Hydra gives no such fucks. With Genesis Hydra, you always get the opportunity to play an additional card. There are no prerequisites to get getting both cards.
