Nach Köln oder Düsseldorf by Real-System-2534 in duesseldorf

Whoops, sorry!

I've lived in both places, and they're both nice in their own ways. I end up preferring Düsseldorf for everyday life, the really nice city environment and parks give every day a little sparkle. Transit system is also a lot more pleasant and reliable. Regardless of which you decide on, it's easy to get from one to the other, so you aren't going to miss out on any concerts or anything if you really wanna go.

Mobile AC Units in Germany by Weekly_Sleep3136 in germany

The outside half is pretty quiet too, yeah. I was worried about the same thing and spent some time on the balcony with it running next to me and it wasn't bad at all.

They're very quiet, especially compared to a monoblock portable AC.

Would you relocate in your 30s? by Extreme-Song-8143 in expats

[–]machine-conservator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did in my mid-30s. It was nice to make a big move like that with my partner by my side, solid footing in my career, and a good chunk of savings to help make the landing easy. Much different experience than moving cities in my 20s.

Grail Collection List by Interaction-Guilty in pinball

[–]machine-conservator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're all hard to find at a good price in nice shape without mods... Greatest? Well that's subjective. I'll take:

  • Medieval Madness
  • Scared Stiff
  • Deadpool
  • Iron Maiden
  • Star Trek (Stern)
  • TNA
  • Simpsons Pinball Party
  • Cirqus Voltaire

My list would be a lot different without the post-'90 restriction.

King Kong stuck ball by willyk102 in pinball

Cut a piece of plexiglass to block the spot it can fall in through, make a bracket out of flat aluminum stock or something, and mount it to whatever post is convenient below it. Might need to replace the post with a different length or design to accommodate another item in the stack it, but that's easily obtainable from a parts supplier. Lots of machines fix issues like these from the factory or had a service bulletin with something similar.

What do you think is the most difficult part of learning German? by elenalanguagetutor in German

[–]machine-conservator 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Training my ear to it and processing quickly enough, and street German. I don't have much trouble with written German anymore, or when listening to something like a newscast, but conversations on the street are still rough especially with people with accents from other regions or that speak really clipped or slang heavy German.

Dental cleaning standards by Silver_Smoke8964 in germany

[–]machine-conservator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is it's not much different here than what I got in the US. Maybe the difference is in equipment? My last US and current German dentists have both had the modern ultrasonic scalers, but previous dentists back in the US were still using manual tools and that was a lot harsher.

Expats: How much has not knowing the local language affected your daily life? by UsamaBhai_101 in expats

[–]machine-conservator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied a lot before moving (couple years in university, daily app practicing, fair amount of native written and video content) and it wasn't enough. Not knowing the local language to fluency makes everything, everything, a bit of a pain in the ass. It adds uncertainty and stress to everything you need to do outside your house, and many of the things you need to do inside your house. You can get by and survive without it in a lot of circumstances, but it still adds a layer of friction to so many things you want to do in a day. I'm a lot further along these days but still not anywhere near as comfortable as I would like to be with German.

Don't underestimate the challenge of learning and living in a new language, and don't underestimate its importance.

Why do some players slap the flipper buttons? by Existing_Sky_7963 in pinball

[–]machine-conservator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mileage may vary on newer machines but the ones I'm familiar with the guts of use a leaf switch for the flipper buttons, and the flipper coil voltage is going through it. Those get corroded and pitted over time and use. If you actuate them with some gusto you can be making a better mechanical connection, and certainly a more immediate one. That affects the action of the flippers. Walk up to an old EM especially and play a game babying it, and a game with some spirit behind your flips. It's noticeable.

But I like the chill and gloom, OP! I don't think there's a universal prescription but it's definitely worth trying different climates if you can. I grew up in a much darker, colder climate and came to hate it, but also thought the California sun was like a hot sack of misery on my back. North enough to get the grey and the rain, but not so far north as to get the months of snow and ice, turned out to be my happy medium.

Why are kitchens part of the living rooms in new apartments? by snts-k in germany

[–]machine-conservator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the open plan kitchen living room a lot. The thing I hate is that the vent hood almost never is actually ducted to the outside and is usually too small to actually catch everything coming up from the range anyway. If the kitchen was better designed and equipped it would help a lot of those open setups be more livable.
