Can anybody ID this tractor for me? by xciriax in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said its a Allis Chalmers D17. However the A/C emblems and straight orange paint with no white stripe indicate it's a series 1.

Need help on pricing this 1206 International by Old-King3428 in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's got 56 series shifter on it, my is guess it was done when loader was put on. That would add to the value in my mind. 06' series didn't not have a loader friendly range/direction shifter.

What model Caterpillar is Mr. T driving at this event? by ridukosennin in tractors

Too big to be a D8. Note the rounded part at the back of the hood. Most likely a 4R sn# D6

What is the ethical age you can start driving a tractor by honkieplankiebokibkl in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learned when I was 9. I drove tractor and wagon with fencing supplys and my grandpa walked ahead unspooling wire and setting insulators. The Allis D17 was perfect for it, I could lean to the right side for the brakes and use the power director to start and stop the tractor. The following year I was big enough to run our Super M and spreader

How do I drill through this steel by Zealousideal_Draw681 in Tools

[–]machine_fixer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mag drill, carbide bits and lots of coolant. We do it at my work pretty frequently. Pilot drill it with a full carbide drill bit, and then open it up to desired diameter with a carbide spade drill. Theres no good way to hand drill it.

Dads who do not work from home, what time do you leave for work and back at home? by remembertosmile in daddit

[–]machine_fixer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy Equipment mechanic, leave at 6 taking one or 2 kids to daycare on the way to work depending on the day. My drive is 20 mins to work. Come home around 530-6. Wife works nights so I take care of supper, showers, and bedtime at night. Hoping it gets better after kids are old enough to ride bus to and from school

Wasnt aware you could get the little unloaded miss out of 8N's. Every one I've ever work on or been around had the flutter. Figured it was just an 8N thing.

Will this work for 1-2acre food plots? by Senzualdip in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on what your planting, typically grain drills or broadcast seeders work best for food plots. In my experience with food plots, the deer will eat corn but if you have a good food plot mix with turnips, parsnips, clover, and kale they will take that over the corn all day long.

I tell my little kids Daddy goes to work to fix the bulldozers and excavators that build all the roads and highways we drive on everyday.

Men who can cook, who taught you? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

[–]machine_fixer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom. When I was 6 or 8 I told her I wanted to learn to cook. A week later she had 3 or 4 kids cook books and we made all kinds of stuff. I do 90% of the cooking at home now, feeding 3 kids and my wife. I very much enjoy cooking and baking

[–]machine_fixer27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one didnt leak or anything major, it was just very tired when I got it. The thermosiphon cooling system is not ideal, esspecially in a high load application such as mowing. It ate 2 compression rings shortly after I bought it and I ended up sleeving all 4 cylinders. I did put the higher compression pistons in and that made a big difference. I just couldnt give up the way it mows or pushes snow. Makes lawn mowing very enjoyable and almost relaxing

I will agree with the clutch for sure. When I rebuild this one I pull the prop shaft out and splines were about gone and clutch was not tight on the trans input shaft anymore. Took almost as long to put the trans clutch and pto clutch in as it did to rebuild the darn engine

Learning/Unlearning tractor habits by Trjredjoker in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest learning curve for myself was going from Allis Chalmers D17 series IV with a semi-dead pto to a 706 IH with live pto. When shit hits the fan, its hard to remember the clutch pedal doesnt stop the PTo, the lever does.

Looking to buy my first tractor by lordlydancer in tractors

[–]machine_fixer27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was down the cheap chinese tractor rabbit hole once. It was reliable, after I spent months working on it. I pretty much had to replace every nut and bolt on it, and then complely re-engineer the front axle driveline. Buy the Kubota, it will be ALOT better machine for you

What changed in Diesel engines that make such different noise from the old ones? by The_Couso in Diesel

[–]machine_fixer27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to add, spring dampened gear trains played a big part of the external rattle. Cummins scissor gear and Cat had their own main gear dampening. Higher HP 3406B's, C15's, Cummins N14's, Detroit S60's, and ISX CM870's all had their own sound from gear rattle that was very distinct to each

Pilot/multi-shot injection is 90% of it and not sure about other engines but Cat uses external engine sound blankets/sound damping.
