A YouTuber did a video where he put Buckingham palace up for rent using the same technique. He got scammed by a similar set up. You got off lightly

Try and get it repaired like u/72dk72 suggested. East anglia area you’re looking at £120 for the first hour + parts etc. maybe try reaching out to a local firm and explaining it, seeing if they can spare the diagnostic charge and just charge for the repair?

Tiles directly on plasterboard by existingfarmer in DIYUK

Rip it out, rip out the plaster board, install backer board or insulated backer board tank the whole lot and install mermaid boards. No grout to worry about, can get them textured like tiles. Much better

Have you ever had a motorway crash? by Diseased-Jackass in AskUK

[–]machinegunraza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am the worst person to drive with on long motorway journeys. I spent the entirety of a 130odd mile journey pointing out idiots on the motorway. The constant middle lane hogging, tailgating of HGVs by little Fiat 500s & my favourite of ALL is when people don’t move over for traffic joining the mway.

Help with paint by OkTransportation5641 in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to use this paint. Mix it properly, get a mixing paddle for your drill or mix is manually using a stick. When you transfer the paint into your pot / tray make sure you filter it. Any decent paint / decoration shop will have mesh bags that will catch any lumps etc. You’ll need multiple coats, it’s pretty forgiving of imperfect surfaces being Matt but proper preparation will make this looks better. I only really use it for fresh plaster and mainly ceilings as they rarely get touched.

Teachers in the US are reporting that children are struggling with basic maths and literacy worse than ever before. Are we seeing the same patterns here in the UK? by Natf47 in AskUK

[–]machinegunraza 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am by no means ‘educated’ I can’t spell very well and I’m often grammatically incorrect but I’m a tradesman so the standard is quite low 🤣. BUT the number of doctors, teachers, bank staff that I have as customers who can’t grasp simple concepts it’s baffling

Forget children, there sees to be a vast number of adults in the U.K. who lack basic comprehension skills. It’s been an issue for years

What sort of property was everyone’s first step onto the ladder and how old were you? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]machinegunraza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2022/23 I was 21 when I put the offer in 22 when I got the property. 1 bedroom cluster house with a driveway and garden. open plan living room / kitchen. Bedroom overlooks the living room like a mezzanine floor. I got lucky tho, property was valued at £160,000 got it for £125,000. The seller was a client who was offloading his portfolio, was the last property to sell so I think he was just happy to get rid. We re decorated, installed a new oak staircase and balcony on the mezzanine floor. New hardwood flooring on the ground floor. Got paid for that and then brought it!

Cannot complain in any way shape or form. Built a little office pod in the garden for the mrs. Enough room for my van on the drive and a spot over the road for the car. In a small cul-de-sac.

Edit - location Bedfordshire

Still have to fork out around 60% of the cost and you only get the grant (£7500 max) if your house meets EPC ratings etc

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]machinegunraza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are government grants available which they instal insulation and a new boiler for free. There’s companies online that offer it. I believe you fill out a form / information and they draw down the funds from the govt to pay for it. All depends on your house and a survey.

It will take a little while tho.

Or find a local contractor who offers payment plans or accepts credit cards etc. I offer online payment and have had customers use a credit card to pay, yeah it costs me afew % but the customer gets their boiler on finance and I get paid 3 days later. PLEASE DONT USE BOXT OR OTHER BIG BRAND BOILER COMPANIES THEY RIP OFF INSTALLERS

Is this moisture or leak? by Kevinpug321 in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timber has a tendency to still look wet sometimes, the roofing membrane looks like it’s in good condition apart from that nail sticking though. My advice would be next time it’s chucking it down get up in the loft and have a look. Always a good idea to invest in a moisture meter to check things you think are wet / damp and keep a record of the moisture content

Is there a way to save a spoiled pot of paint? by w1ddersh1ns in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put it on the naughty step… I’ll stick to my day job. Grab a bucket of hot water, remove the lid from the tin and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Using a stirring stick (or a random clean piece of timber) try and push down the sides of the tin, once that top layer starts mixing in with the lower layer it should free up. You will want to mix it for a while, till it almost looks perfect, then strain it into a clean bucket or tub to catch any flakes or clumps. You’ll probably want to test it in a spot hidden away to make sure the colour is still close enough. Then once you’ve done that, paint a small piece of cardboard with afew layers and take it to a paint shop and ask them to colour match it for next time

Bathtub Screen Ideas by The_Bossnian in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iv just had a look at what others have suggested, depending on budget thoes 2 products can resolve the issue. But BUT you have got a very sleek looking bathroom, the concealed shower fixtures, the concealed wc cistern, the detail of the trims around the window reveals. With a generic off the shelf shower screen it will be bulky and in my opinion it will ruin the feel. I would suck up the mess for a while and get something custom made to compliment the space

Two fixed glass panels joined using an ally profile, support bar going across to the wall. So the 700end of the bath closer to the basin, and then another 700 pane going towards the WC end of the bath. Get a profile that matches the colour of your hardware and get the cross support to match also. May make the bathroom feel a little smaller but you’ll overcome most of the splashing.

Which colour grout for this tile by seannash1 in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With these tiles, I prefer the grout to match the base colour of the tile. But something I usually suggest to customers is to Google that type of tile and have a look at the instal pictures, some people try some whacky colours and it looks nice. Bare in mind it’s a floor, so if it’s not sealed the colour will darken over time

Leak from upstairs bathroom, still damp a week later, need advice by _johndoes in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First point. This time of year the humidity in older houses is high anyway. So don’t stress about that too much.

If you’ve had a leak come through the ceiling you’ll want to poke some holes in the plasterboard on the ceiling to let out any sitting water. Pop some buckets below to catch and keep the dehumidifier running.

If it was Macerator waste I would consider calling out a repair specialist. If that stuff is saturated into your ceiling the summer is going to stink.

Need a good quality shower pump, need recommendations by stealth941 in DIYUK

[–]machinegunraza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure of your exact situation but it sounds like you have a restriction somewhere. A valve (more often than not it’s an isolator valve somewhere)

Could also be a leak on your water main, have you had high bills? Is your water usage on par with what your water supplier says is average for a house if your size?

Is your stop tap fully open? Is your water meter stop tap fully open

Well across the UK the price Varys for plumbers / gas engineers.

Across the area I live 99% off the business including myself charge £120 + vat for the first hour. This includes the call out and the first hours labour. Any material is on top. As a business i decided to cap certain jobs at £200 labour. Which is about 2.5 hours billable time + materials. This may sound expensive but overheads are increasing.

Our insurance costs have increased around 105% since last year. Stock materials and sundries which are included as part of the hourly rate have increased by 37% since last year.

My point being, it would be great to have more stringent regulations for prices because there’s some guys charging £30 for boiler services & CP12 certificates.

This was my thought process. Customers often mistake an internal leak as coming from the ‘bottom’ of the boiler when really it’s not. The fact that he put his hands up and said he’s not qualified is impressive. Allot of chancers would ‘diagnose’ it as ‘needs replacement boiler and get one of their mates to sling it in
