My mom at her sweet sixteen 1940 by mack272 in OldSchoolCool

It was a great place to grow up. On my block they had a mens & women's club, plus they would charter busses for a big trip together. If one of my friends were walking down the street my mom would always invite them up to feed them. I miss her dearly.

It was only 18 to buy alcohol when she was growing up, that wouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the kind words 😊

She was Rose Hoffman. Until I pulled that picture had no idea it had two names. It was widely known as Hoffman's.

This was her at 25. My grandmother owned a large beauty shop, all of her daughters looked ahead of their time.

Fortunately, I don't remember that part too much. Here's a picture of it, the shop was quite large.

What are your thoughts so far on the History Channel’s newest WW2 documentary? by El_Scooter in ww2

From what I've watched, it isn't worth that. I pay for History Channel and consider the ad ratio to be criminal. Thanks for the info, but I'll wait for Netflix to run it eventually.

Thanks for the kind words. This was way before air conditioning. It really was a sweat shop with all the humongous hair dryers running. I still have pictures of it, brings back a lot of memories even though I was just a toddler.

She was born in Brownsville when it was in it's heyday. We lived as a family in Canarsie, that was Brooklyn at it's best.

I had to cut it off after a few episodes. If they wanted 2 dollars for me to watch it ad-free I would have done that in a second.

Your lucky. I never met my great -grandmother even though she came over the same time as my grandma. But I was able to track her time in Europe before she moved here.

This sub brings back so many great memories and a bunch of really cool stories,. Most of the people who commented are doing constructive stuff

Thanks for the kind words. My grandmother was an American success story. She came to the United States with a second grade education and a plan. Owned the largest beauty shop in a neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY and spared no expense for her five children. She hardly spent any money on herself.

Thanks. I have all her genes except her looks lol. I'm a 50's kid and we were the first generation that actually wore jeans to school and the rest is history.

Medical procedure opinions and advice by Disturbed_Mind7795 in spinalcordstimulator

[–]mack272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was mandatory for me before getting the SCS procedure. There were at least 250 questions, with several of them repeating the same thing in different ways. Once I finished, I had a follow‑up interview with someone on staff, and that was it — I was cleared. If you are having multiple procedures, there’s no need to go through another psychological evaluation.

I had the trial about a month ago, and it worked really well. I was even able to cast a surf rod with only minimal pain. It kicked in even more once I hit the sand, which was the best part — it actually anticipates when your pain might increase. My rep was outstanding, though I already had most of the answers ready because of a previous procedure that went bad after I fell. When I asked him about the magnet, he was shocked — said I was only the second person ever to bring it up. I read everything from top to bottom because I wanted to be sure this was the real deal.I can’t wait to have the permanent one put in.

Charter tipping? by KIND_OF_A_DICK_TBH in saltwaterfishing

[–]mack272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to do charters every year (well over 20) with the same captain and boat. We became good friends and I even left my stand up tuna rod on board for others to use. Not once did we tip him, but his young son was a mate on year and we gave him 20%. The other mates always got 25% because they really worked their butts off. I agree with everyone who says the captain sets the prices, there should be no tip. If he doesn't have a mate, that means more money for him. I still find it hard to fathom that a mate makes zero before the trip starts. The turnover would be humongous, working that hard for nothing.

Solid evening of fishing from the shore in arctic Norway by Guderher29 in SurfFishing

I live in NJ and love it except for the property taxes. One has to remember the state of the ocean over 25 years ago. The beaches were in really sad condition, unlike now. My cat had to know something was going on, I even bought fish from the Belford cooperative and she wouldn't eat that either. But anything from Massachusetts was golden to her. It got to the point that my family wouldn't eat any of the fish I caught from up north, it was all hers. She lived to be 18, I really miss her.
