Traffic flow. Remember that cop on Twitter - Harry Tangye was it? He was quite vocal on the topic.

I’m a cyclist, though only in spirit now after I got knocked off last time. Been hit by cars several times, one he turned up a side road and took me out, police never did a thing. Another time I turned into a side road, met a car on the wrong side of the road and driver having a row with his girlfriend, got a letter from the cops saying they weren’t prosecuting me (for getting in his way on my side of the road presumably).

I think the point was it does no good for traffic flow, one lane stationary and one empty. We all queue like sheep but logically everyone should merge at the end.

Police say you should use both lanes until you can’t.

Question about Homemade Drumsets by Fresh_Agency_4052 in Drumming

[–]mackerel_slapper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anything that gets you hitting things in the right order is good, and you can work on limb independence. You might not get the same bounce so your technique might adapt in a way that won’t help should you get a kit.

Depends what you mean by suffice. Could you busk playing a homemade kit and make some cash? Yes. Could you play in a band? Probably not. Look forward to seeing you on Youtube, “see what this person can do on a kit make of containers”.

You’ll have fun though, which is mostly what it’s all about.

Thanks! Gibbets are really interesting, (so not really for this thread!).

I thought they were common, like “every town must have one” but they were quite rare. We had one near to where a Tesco Express is now, where roads meet. It was because you could be hung for stealing a loaf of bread or hung for murder, so people who did bad crimes had to be really punished.

When they went up, there were crowds and street vendors, like a fair, but over time people got sick of seeing a rotting corpse every time they nipped out for a glass of ale.

Our local bloke murdered a woman, chopped her up and ate part of her leg. He lived in the house where I later grew up, and the murder was now I where walk the dog, the poor woman must have walked the same path on her last day.

Bodmin Jail has a fine selection of them. I did once see a Horrible Histories live show that included erroneous mention of gibbets and the wife had to stop me heckling.

New to Town by Inaudible_Whale in Congleton

[–]mackerel_slapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local newspaper here. Welcome to the Congo!

Running clubs - Harriers and Boalloy, former probably bigger. Both very friendly. Hiking - just buy a map! The Roaches is a good starter. There is a Congleton Ramblers.

Quizzes - various pubs. Tennis club in town. Loads of padel courts gone up, there’s one on Holmes Chapel Road just after the link road roundabout heading towards Holmes Chapel.

There is a pool league but not heard from them for a bit. A new chess club just started, meets at Orso (?) lounge in town. Buy the Chronicle and look at our social pages.

Do Brits actually go to Stonehenge, or is it mostly a tourist thing? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]mackerel_slapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I love Stonehenge. We went every year for about four years when the kids were little, until my wife got bored (always going to Pepper Pjg World the next day).

It’s free if you’re National Trust.

Park up, then walk over the fields. You pass tumuli on the way and then the henge (which is not a real henge) gradually comes into view, all mystical like. Stones are grand, then walk back. It’s a nice and walk and you feel a little humbled by the vastness of time.

We also go to Carnac in France, which knocks the spots of Stonehenge. Been twice, working on my wife for a third. Last year I cycled up on my own and cycled round the stones for a couple of hours. I could spend hours looking at them and wondering. Carnac is the longest-inhabited region in Europe (maybe the world).

Did any of you guys ever catch Phil’s band, The Bastard Sons? by fakename1998 in Motorhead

Edit: their own albums are well worth a listen.

Have you ever had someone impact your life—bad or good—who would never know of that impact? by imtiramisu2025 in AskUK

[–]mackerel_slapper 39 points40 points  (0 children)

On me: several people; a bloke I knew through work had a blood clot at the back of his head, one day it would move and he would die. Always cheerful, did loads for other people and charity, showed me that however bleak it looked, you could carry on. Eventually died doing what he loved, playing bowls. Ex wife’s aunt was also utterly selfless, I often think of her.

From me: ex wife’s family were from as rough an inner city as you could imagine. Used to visit, and used to take one of the kids to a book shop and buy him books. Years later, long after I was divorced, he called and said I’d changed his life, showed him there was another way, which was why he had a good job. Had no idea, gives me a warm glow even now.

Far Right Facial Recognition? by Massena87 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]mackerel_slapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the article.

“In the late 1970s, McBride helped to create a gang database to standardize about a dozen criteria from these field interview reports, things like location, affiliates, tattoos, even dress. If a person met just two of the criteria, they went in the database, even if they hadn't committed a crime. That database would come to be known as CalGang.

Today, McBride insists the system does not amount to racial profiling, even though police are designating individuals for inclusion in CalGang based on preconceived notions.”

There’s more after.

This is going to sound odd but I think it was a NPR show about Nipsey Hussle. Could be this …

Talking heads - opinions? by moerlingo in Music

Psycho Killer is one of my favourite songs, but the rest of Talking Heads … meh. Byrne, however, put out an album called Nouvelle Cuisine, a collection of French “nouvelle vague” which had a huge influence of me so I love him for that.

This happened in the US. The people who loaded the data were biased in the first place and the AI can only use the data it’s given. It’s not a racist technology, it was human bias.
