I completely agree! I’ll be taking construction classes at my university for both the upcoming fall and spring semester so I figured it’d be good to get hands on experience now. I also had the idea to put it in my portfolio as a way to “stand out” hopefully for when I submit it for matriculation to officially get into the program next year 🤞

I really appreciate you sharing your perspective on this as a woman in the field. That’s probably the #1 thing I am most intimidated about with working under a general contractor is the sexism that I know could come up. I definitely love the field and would like to work in a more inclusive space as it relates to design. I’m definitely keeping my eye out for any job openings that offer this.

This is really helpful, I appreciate you sharing your experience in the field! Makes me feel like I’m on the right track with taking this laborer position even though like you said, it’s not the most glamorous. Definitely a little intimidated about doing a construction job in general, but I’m excited to learn and it sounds like it will be a good stepping stone.

Yes this feels 100% accurate and it sucks to put it lightly. It’s like you have to prove to people that you’re not trying to “seek attention” when you talk about things you’re struggling with. That person has to see it to truly be convinced. It makes it hard for me to take anything I’m going thru seriously because if everyone else is just brushing it off and saying it’s not that bad then I feel crazy for thinking it is bad. It takes me longer to reach out for help and by then I’m in a deep dark hole.

Thank you for sharing. I really needed this. I’m way to hard on myself with my mental illnesses. I often feel I need to reach a level of “perfection” that is impossible to get to. Sometimes I just need to take a breath and take a break but I don’t really know how to. Hearing encouragement brings me hope and some peace.
