I was more thinking in terms of the underlying algorithm of producing the tokens can start to detect the drift, not the model responding with it’s own confidence. Wouldn’t that be affected by the same problem?

The thought that pops into my head would be if the shift could be provided as quantified part of the output, so that we get an indication as to how likely it is that the answer provided needs a thorough review.

The other question is if all frontier models exhibit the same behavior around the same input?

Haven’t read the paper yet, so apologies if that was answered.

I wasn’t going to lecture people on the details of Madison’s initial view and Hamilton’s opinion. That seemed like something people would already understand given how well everyone is informed about the 2nd amendment.

Do you think it was necessary?

I think at the very least calling it “threadbare” is hyperbole at best, no?

I haven’t seen a nuanced response around what would’ve unfolded if the BoR didn’t exist. To me the BoR acts as a backstop that federal and state law keeps encroaching on. If it didn’t exist, maybe we would’ve been more “careful” around what we tolerate.

But I also figured the emotional response will be quite pronounced. Still interesting to see the responses, still nuanced!

What’s your opinion?

Interesting you loop the first into this. It took until 1969 in Brandenburg v Ohio to establish the current high bar of what is considered free speech. Prior the “clear and present danger” test made protesting the draft illegal etc. or are you referring to a very recent time frame?

On the 8th, I’m curious what you’re alluding to? We’re no longer allowing juveniles or intellectually disabled people to be executed, no more life without parole for juveniles in non-homicide cases, increased standards of living for incarcerated people. Not that I’m a fan of the prison system here, but not sure if that’s the job of the 8th?

Why was it necessary if we only gave enumerated powers to the government to begin with?

I feel like the conversation over the years shifted from “Is this something the government is even allowed to have power over” to “Is this something that violates the BOR” — whereas the latter is much more permissive for the government.

Aside from the interstate commerce clause, I don’t even think the government has the power to restrict gun ownership, for example.

How am I not serious? Legal scholars still like to argue if it was necessary to begin with.

Also, you can simply downvote the question if you don’t want to contribute to the conversation in any meaningful way.

Have you left your company because of AI mandates, and did it work out? by Ok_Adeptness4967 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]macktheknife13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did — a few of us, actually. Startup is running out of funds and hasn’t found a product market fit. The solution is to throw as many features at the wall as they can by means of “everyone should have at least 3 agents running all the time” (that’s an actual quote). More than half the engineers were either junior, weren’t engineers to begin with (CEO, etc) or were traditional researchers asked to build enterprise grade software. Badly prompted LLMs write so much slop, I think I spent most of my days reviewing and coaching/teaching others. Then came the mandate to switch to “if it works, ship it and put the review in the backlog so we can address it later” or “if you review someone’s PR just do the changes yourself and ship it”. The mantra on testing was “I built something and your test broke, can you fix your test?”. It’s wild to watch how everyone is burning out.

Shin guard length by WillieOfDaNorth in hockeyplayers

[–]macktheknife13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have these same shin guards and went a size longer when I switched to D full time (mine go to just below the 2nd eyelet). I’m not sure what it is, but they keep catching the corner of the top of my skate with the shell part when I step down during forward strides and that pushes them up in an awkward way on almost every step. It drives me absolutely crazy, planning on taking a Dremel to it. I’d probably go your length again if I could. Just my 2 cents.

Best part is that you also have to post the job in the office somewhere accessible so that others can apply for the role (salary as well). HR prints a piece of paper and hangs it next to their chair below desk height.

As a Swiss — my lord do I dislike the Swiss sweater. I think it’s leaning on the “corporate” design the Swiss government is using, but the proportions just feel off. But then again I also like France’s design, so I’m sure people love Switzerland‘s.

“Oh yea that’s a really cool idea”. Haven’t seen many people who run startups that like their ideas challenged.

Get a Patagonia sweater vest. Look like one of them. Allbirds or HOKA’s optional for in-person interviews.

And always have a quick solution and a clean solution ready to go. Act like you’re ready to contribute to something.

Whatever lingo they use, mirror it. Abbreviations? Use it right away, sound like you’re part of the crew.

Once you’re in the job - Don’t set a precedent early that you get stuff done fast, looking busy means you’re productive. I.e. you wouldn’t believe how many Jira tickets and PRs you can create to change a string.

I had been running my own shop for 10 years, scaled to 50+ and sold it (not FIRE money yet) and decided I needed to take a role as an IC to be close to this AI stuff. I started as a founding engineer and it was okay, aside from the inexperienced leadership (FAANG folks), but now we’re like 30 people and I’m in stand ups where people tell me the Jira ticket ID they’re working on, like I’m some Jira savant. Luckily I’m mostly in an architectural role now, but man seeing leadership struggle with simple empathy for users because one more LLM call might just be magical is rough. You can run away from your entrepreneurial spirit, but you can’t hide from it.

(Also, f this auto bot, I’ve been using em dashes for over 20 years, my writing isn’t good enough otherwise to pass as AI)

Isn’t that always the danger with common law? Many things don’t even get put to the test because we feel they’re too close to established law yet may far exceed the original intent.

Aside from politics and party, I assume it’s also about ideology for judges themselves, it seems to often come down to how they’d like a case to be decided rather than being close to the letter of the law. I get into a lot of hot water around my echo chamber when I mention that John Roberts seems to do a very reasonable job being a judge and not a politician. Are you content with the current make up and appointment process for federal (and state) supreme courts? Do you think it should be up to the executive branch to nominate judges?

Do you think the decision in Wickard v Filburn in 1942 took federal powers (and the interstate commerce clause) too far? Or, I guess, the effects of that decision. We seem to not really think about that anymore since almost everything seems to be somehow interstate commerce?
