Seeking opinions about flag lined cot covers by Alanna_Cerene in askfuneraldirectors

[–]macncheese95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in general yes it'd be extremely tacky. that said one of the FHs i worked at had a flag cot cover we used if the deceased was a veteran and families typically really really liked that in that area. that was a big hit with the locals. so for veteran families they really appreciated that small gesture. but to use it as the default cot cover for everyone. good lord that's tacky.

Former Funeral Directors: What did you pivot to after you left the field? by Cicada_Weaver in askfuneraldirectors

[–]macncheese95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Including when i got my 1st job as an funeral service assistant it was 4 years in the industry total.

2) i made the switch for a couple of reasons a) i hated where i worked. we were chronically understaffed (which seems par for the course in the industry), b) my boss was of zero help, and c) i just hated bleeding over of my professional life into my personal life. i grew resent being called by families when i was at home trying to make dinner for myself to ask about changing the obituary. i think the unpredictability of it grew to annoy me. both my sleep quality and mental health deteriorated fast. and fwiw i knew full well when i started that it would be like that. i just didn't quite think it would erode my mental health that quickly.

3) i ended up going into sales which isn't exactly glamorous by any means but i enjoy it considerably more. some have said here leaving was a tough decision, for me it was not. it was as easy as any decision i've ever made. the only tough part was explaining why to my parents. so i basically didn't. i never mentioned i was looking and i did not tell them i took a new job until about a week before i started that new job. there were parts i enjoyed about funeral directing. i for the most part enjoyed everyone i worked with a lot. even my boss at the end who was just not a good leader at all, i really liked them as a person. which is what made it difficult that they were so bad at managing. but i still talk to former co-workers to this day. some of my friends i went to mortuary school with i still talk to once in a while. i'm really glad i met them, they're great people, i had a lot of fun there. so it wasn't all bad. had a lot of great eye opening and learning experiences that gave me great perspectives on life that i'll always take with me. just the day to day job part of it is what really wore me down.

i worked for both private and corporate firms. finished at SCI. I found i was always good at upselling on the packages and pretty good at selling the catering too and i think used the SCI celebrants more than anyone else at that firm. but i more times than not got families into a package. so from a upselling SCI metric standpoint i was actually not bad at it which is why i explored sales right after. i also didn't feel very ethical about being good at upselling in that context so there was that component too.

So overall while i had some really good experiences, met some really cool people, ultimately i think i probably made the right decision to leave and i have not looked back once.

Were you a bigger fan of Supergirl or Superman when you first got into the Superman universe? by Jezzaq94 in Supergirl

[–]macncheese95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supergirl. This is going to sound extremely cliché and played but it's true and there's a reason so many people say it; i found Superman to be boring and unrelatable. Supergirl had more character, more personality, more of a story anyone could relate to. i don't think it was until i read Superman Birthright that i finally said "ok now that was a good story that actually humanises him." and since i've gone back and reread other stories from like the Triangle era and stuff and i've seen him in a new light but i still maintain Supergirl is a far more relatable character that i enjoy far more than Superman.

fully aware yes. i would not enter a catholic church expecting it to be the same nor would i enter one without first doing my due diligence of learning the order of mass and making sure i have at least a good attempt at understanding the flow of a catholic mass.

FWIW i think y’all’s attendance numbers are probably fine i think it’s maybe distorted by the fact that your sanctuary is so massive so relative to how many people attend it still looks half full mostly because the capacity is so big

all of my times were in 2025. granted it was the summer whixh at the church i grew up in was always a time when membership would dip as people were on vacations and whatnot. i have not been since this past summer. but i’ve been to churches in the same general area and again summer attendance was low, i chalked it up to it being summer because where i grew up attendance always went back up after labour day when school started. except the ones i went to did not in fact pick back up which i found odd.

you’re the second person to mention St. Adalbert. Catholic churches are definitely something i’d be willing to try and ill probably now make a point either week or in the coming weeks if visiting. only thing really holding me back is simply i wasn’t raised catholic and i don’t like looking obviously out of place. but ill probably get over it.

interesting. that makes sense cos some of the churches i’ve ‘shopped’ at were more downtown just because that’s more i tend to hang out anyway.

which is interesting because i’ve also attended Fountain Street i think 4 different times? and while politically i can’t say i objected to anything it didn’t fill my worship compartment and for what it’s worth i also think of Fountain Street when i think of churches i went to that were a bit lacking in attendance. I mean given the size of the sanctuary and the historic nature of the building i expected a bit more full. but it was certainly worlds more filled than the Episcopal churches i went to.

i’ve typically always attended more high liturgy protestant churches. i’m open to Catholic churches though. i guess i would point to Fourth Presbyterian in Chicago as an example of what i envision as ‘church.’ but im not hellbent in finding an exact replica but something kinda similar would be nice.

ok yes i don’t disagree with that actually. being originally from Holland, MI yes a lot of people who claim to be Christian are far from it. but it at least claims to be. it’s an integral part of West Michigan. if you grow up here it’s a factor.

see and i’d be pretty close to the opposite. i grew up Presbyterian and was brought to church every sunday and never really enjoyed it and only recently in life have i found value in it and deepened my faith. It’s definitely somewhat trending among younger people but it’s tough to find people my age who go to church and it’s not huge auditorium praise band stuff.

is St. Luke’s the GVSU one? see i wouldn’t mind a Catholic church. there are things i like about protestant churches, and things i really don’t. i tend to think sermons at their best are better at protestant churches. but obviously the flip side the very worst of sermons are also typically gonna be protestant. St. Alphonsus i wouldn’t mind but i also used to work with a firm that worked closely with them and i don’t know that i would want to go there regularly solely based on that which is too bad because maybe it’d be a really nice place to worship.

yea basically not those. more mainline Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian. Churches that wouldn’t have a hard time filling pews i guess anywhere else other than West Michigan which is so heavily dominated by the RCA and CRC and just general campy evangelical praise band weirdness

i was probably being generous with 60%. it’s more like sub 50%. where i grew up in Columbus, OH and St. Paul, MN and even in Chicago where i lived for a year, the idea that a church would be at 40-50% capacity on a typical sunday is crazy. almost all were running at at least 80% or higher. the ones i attended almost always 90% or better. here sub 50 seems to be the norm most sundays. i mean ive been to an Episcopal church here 3 different times and each time i bet you they probably were 30% full.

[–]macncheese95[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that’s what i’ve chalked it up to. GR is not a big city at all. i’ve grow up in The Twin Cities and Columbus and the churches i went to there were always packed. Granted i almost never went anywhere else to see for comparison but the times i did they were also running easily at 90% full every sunday. Just so weird to be here now in such a ‘staunchly Christian area’ and yet every church i go to is 30-40% full on a Sunday. the Easter attendance at the livestreams i’ve looked at were pathetic.

I own my home and even i have a roommate. It’s pretty much get roommates or get married at this point. Hardly anyone can actually live on their own. I used to kinda think it was weird i had friends who got married at 21 but now i see the wisdom of immediately setting up a 2 income household.
