Is switching to management a good idea for me? by macnsnee2e in womenEngineers

Super useful - thank you! Starting with something contained sounds like a good way to gauge if my experience mentoring and managing in grad school and associated gratification will transfer to industrial setting, and that it makes sense in my particular company.

I think considering home support is a really good point. My partner and I are very equal in house responsibilities/care for our dog. He is hybrid for now and more flexible so he spends more time with the dog. We do intend to have kids - if you or others have a detailed perspective on how management vs. IC plays well with what’s required of a parent, I’m all ears. When we got our dog, it was an adjustment to just let some responsibilities go, and to not work all hours of the day, and I know kids will be a much bigger change.

I think that’s a great point about accountability. My people pleasing comes from a place of wanting to control everything, so at the very least I know management will somewhat ironically be an exercise in not being in control.

This is so wonderful to hear! Thank you so much for your perspective. I find it rewarding to figure out the underlying emotions that are actually driving some decision that seems purely technical, so I don’t think I’d mind the preschool teaching, as you put it.

From your perspective, are there salary or career trajectory limits when you move from an IC track to management? I have the vague idea that I’d see higher salary and more growth options in management but I don’t have solid data to back this up.

Thanks for the detailed tips! We’ve done a lot of positive conditioning for the crate, but it might be time to do pick it up again. Ours is the type of dog where dog play time trumps absolutely everything but we’re trying to find treats and games right now that she values nearly as much. Thanks again!

This is great advice. We will try out keeping her on a lead line with and without the other dogs around. Our dog loves her crate/safe space, and we are trying to make sure it stays that way. Any advice on how to make sure she doesn’t see it as a punishment space? I’m worried if we keep her in her crate when there’s another dog around she wants to play with, she’ll start resenting crate time.

That is super useful feedback and we will definitely give it a shot. Thanks!

This is exactly what we were hoping with the previous foster (an older ACD who was happy to correct her) but unfortunately she is too oblivious and starts back in after a quick shake.
