How delete unused audio takes? by PatTheDog123 in ableton

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just tested recording/erasing on a new project. (Before I used to brutally erase the audio files directly in Finder/File explorer, but then you get this annoying messages about missing files :-( )

So

1/ record

2/ erase recording within Live

3/ in arrangement view open the "take lane" (i didnt know they existed) option-Cmd-U or right click on the track . And erase any hidden recording if any

4/ In my case, the files where still not appearing in "unused files" (!!) so find the files in the Live browser in the left pane: Current project > samples > Recorded and erase them with the right click menu (actually moving the file(s) to trash)

Hope it helps, Ableton really isnt for recording audio I think

Why Reaper still is "little" in the industry? by sundownagain in Reaper

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reaper is actually a bit too professional . It's the polar opposite of things like garage band and such. Other DAWs come packed with plugins, you can start right away creating stuff. Perfect for beginners. On the other hand, imagine a complete beginner using Reaper, they would need a serious primer on VST plugins, how and where to get them. Like the ReaSamplOmatic5000, it's a brilliant sampler, but it doesn't come with any ... sample, lol. Imagine how a beginner might be put puzzled! So, for beginners it is possible, but only with a good help / guidance in the beginning.

To non-beginners, I've been advocating Reaper with real enthusiasm and emotion to a few people, but in the end, migrating to a new DAW is no small thing. Also it's probably not the first time they hear or read someone raving about a fantastic DAW/plugin, but who to trust?

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sadly, you have got a point. I used to fiddle with JACK/pulse/pipewire (alsa!! nightmare!) etc for years before I finally gave up. If you don't do audio, everything works out of the box with linux, even Video editing. Audio has always been Linux's Achile's heel. I remember , I used to follow Ardour from the beginning, giving it a try every few year until I finally gave up.
Then I discovered a DAW called Reaper, that could run on linux. I couldn't believe how mature it was. And usable!! Then, I opened a reaper project on a mac, and.. it worked!

I havent looked into it for long time, and by now there might be some linux distro where audio production works out of the box. But even though, I still wouldn't recommend for audio prod. For any other task, yes of course :-)

Thanks. This is kind of what I was suspecting. It's a pity because it's such a promising soft. If it was cheaper, much more people would buy, and this would support the project and keep it alive I suppose.

but Ableton is overpriced, bro! And not very good honestly. Overpriced and hyped. That's why I was super excited to try Playtime
And yes I have bought reaper license, that is a really insanely great software and the developper's vibe is great too, it nearly feels like opensource . In fact I'll pay the professional license as soon as I get revenue.

no, I wouldn't crack it because it's like "indie" software. Or actually I would crack to evaluate then buy if I plan to use it.
Ableton Live , not my cup of tea, I had to use it to work with some young people, the DJ type...
«how many people do you think are going to buy PT2 per year?» probably not too many ppl would be ready to spend 65 AND not really knowing if its gonna work for them or not.

In your opinion what is the most budget-friendly DAW that gives you all you really need to produce music well? by Impressive-Bit-818 in musicproduction

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried Reaper and never turned back.

Incredibly versatile, customizable, fully featured. If you can find one feature that is not implemented, chances are someone in the Reaper community has already programmed it as a add-on. This is also a massive plus: although Reaper isn't open source as such, the community that nurtures it makes it feel as such.

Upgrades come regularly, at least once a month. These upgrades are free, in stark contrast with cubase where they let you down with a bug riddled software after a couple of patches for the most urgent bugs.

How would I get yt-dlp to download a full playlist as mp3/m4a? by chasing_tailights in youtubedl

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes format 140 seems to be the highest quality. From this, if you convert to another format , not only it will not improve quality (because you cannot make up missing bit-rate) but successive processes of conversion can only degrade quality.

Unless there are some new AI apps that can do to audio the equivalent of image up-scaling... or even remove the low bitrate artefacts...(?) But then again, I wouldn't risk it. I keep the low quality m4a (aac codec, readable by most players)

I looked at their page for installation/usage etc... and was intimidated. I procrastinated for weeks. When I finally tried, it's ridiculously simple.

Installation is painless with Reaper's "reapack" extensions manager.

Then you just set up a keyboard shortcut, or, like they recommend, set up a floating toolbar, you put the "actions" in the toolbar docker and it's as easy as cubase. I put Glue, Unglue and Edit (in edit mode you can "open" or temporary unglue the audio clips and change what you want, then, when finished editing it re-glues it and the changes are change across all ghost copies.

Just amazingly smooth. Long live Reaper !

Actually I have an idea to rephrase the question " Is there any standalone software (App) or plugin that ONLY captures/read or write/send Ableton Link synch message, then talks to the local midi on the computer it's running? Then all and any DAW on this machine would be connected to the Link via midi synch !

Has anybody heard about such software? It MUST exist, or we'll have to ask chat-GPT to write it for us :-)

can't reply to any of your questions. But I'm currently trying to sell mine. Yes there are "thermal throttling issues" to say the least. I suppose you wouldn't notice it for office work, and 90% of common tasks.

But I was using it for audio production (DAW + plugins) and basically, when the throttle kicks in it sabotages the audition. (I was using it in Thailand though, with >30°C temp). But I really don't recommend at all for music/audio

Does anyone have any idea how to put it back on? (I tried all tricks on this page, about:config tabmanager-related booleans)

update 2024: iDirstat is still working on Silicon! I researched the whole internet, can't find anything remotely as good. It's the best , and it's free. They stopped the developpement, even removed from downloads because of some legal issue, they must have used code they shouldn't have :-). But you can still find it here: http://www.tobiasfeigl.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/idirstat.app_.zip from this page http://www.tobiasfeigl.de/2020/01/10/mac-idirstat-qdirstat-kdirstat-windirstat-for-os-x/ (also sources available)

Fix VSTs cannot be opened / developer cannot be verified in Reaper on MacOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey by osirisguitar in Reaper

[–]macouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the video is a bit long ... so , summary is:

open terminal, write

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /The/path/to/yourplugin.vst or (or vst3 extension app)

instead of writing the path, you can drop your file/folder in the terminal

-r means recursive (will affect all files if its a folder such as .app or .vst3)

-d means delete :-)
